That is bad news. Lack of news after crash was worrying. It will always happen in this sport we love but it does not make it any easier to hear

Oliver Gavin (who ran behind the Aston when it went off) suggested that the Aston may have hit a tree directly behind the barrier, which we saw in pieces.

Now I understand why the car was covered up and taken directly to race scrutineering instead of being returned to the team to assess the damage.

Very sad.

Onboard from the Corvette shows the accident beginning.

It feels like the accident was much harder than it should've been at that part of the track.

Wtf? That didn't look like that big a crash, but I also haven't seen the replay. Just the car spinning at the end.

The car appears to have hit a tree, fans on Twitter and Oliver Gavin reported seeing bits of bark on the ground (though bits of debris may have caused that).

They were repairing the guardrail afterwards so I guess if it's 'soft' and you hit it head on and get the bit right in front of a tree? But otherwise that looks like a 'normal' crash.

RIP.

It was a big hit, the left side of the car was quite heavily damaged and it'd obviously penetrated the barrier.

Nevertheless its quite a shock, I guess thats just a reflection of how safe motorsport is nowadays.

The theory about the tree, seems partly unlikely now, as the car hit the barrier on the right side, and the driver sits on left. It seems more likely that it was internal, not external that caused this.

This his how it often looks like. The most dangerous crashes are often not the most spectacular. I really didn't expect it to be a fatal crash when I saw it.

I think it's because crashes in which the car spins, sheds bodyparts, spins again, and soforth look more dangerous because they look spectacular. But with an accident like this - and like that of Dale Earnhardt, which also looked relatively calm - all the energy of the crash is channeled to one moment.
