I think the point was that they didn't run on tyres that have been raced, or will be raced. The 2013 tyre they tested was meant to be run in Canada on Friday by all teams, but it was wet. That tyre was then vetoed by Lotus, Ferrari and FI. They tested early spec 2014 tyres too, which may be difficult to develop on a 2013 car, but Pirelli have to develop them on something. And Mercedes haven't been the only team to run in a tyre test for Pirelli this season. The situation regarding what tyres were run in the pre-Barcelona Ferrari test is even more opaque.

They probably (imo) did use the 2013 tyres at some stage as a control - I think it would be a bit strange if they didn't run them at all. I haven't seen the denial as65p keeps referring to - maybe it's out there but it's private / secret..

Of course they benefited from the test - it would be near impossible not to!

I don't think there is any doubt that their car is better (?much) than it was before this test. It may not all be down to the test itself, but it would be naive in the extreme for anyone to claim they learned nothing.

Even Brawn didn't claim that at the Tribunal, when asked the question.

I'm sure they learned something. However Barcelona was so bad that it would be impossible for them not to improve on. Don't forget that they fought for the victory for much of the race in Malaysia, and finished on the podium in China. And then you have Pirelli's recent conservative tyre choices to consider. Red Bull have similarly found themselves more competitive, in comparison to Ferrari and Lotus.

Which ever tires they were running they were appropriate enough for Mercedes to be able to fix their race day rear tire overheating issue. Since the test Mercedes are the leading point scoring team, the number one team on the grid! Great result and thanks to the tribunal - no penalty.

I've no doubt that Mercedes have improved but i think they've also been helped by the nature of two of the tracks plus the conservative tyres that Pirelli have been using recently

How incompetent would Mercedes have to be to not gain advantage from the test? How the hell can people vote 'no'?

It's not like it solved all of their problems. Not to mention they screwed up in the qualifying with Nico and in the race when they pitted Hamilton and he was stuck behind Rosberg. It could have been 1-2 quali for them and it could have been a totally different story. Safety cars in races have been the biggest help for Mercedes in the races after Barcelona. Otherwise they would have suffered from degradation much more.

Yup they've been doing that all season.

But the simple fact is as Ross Brawn said . . Barcelona HOT, Monaco, Canada and Silverstone - not HOT, Germany HOT . . . . and the tyres reacted accordingly. Seems pretty clear that Mercedes problems still exist, not surprising given the fact they didn't test on these tyres and therefore any data they did see on the day is mostly irrelevant.

Because Pirelli sent the data from the "Merc" test to all of the teams after the test. Merc would have gained a small amount of knowledge about how the car was handling but every team would have the same amount of knowledge about each of the tyres used and how they reacted.

Added a bit on for clarification.

Which obviously would not be the case if Horner would not have been a dumbass. As it stands, 2-3 similar tests are going to happen anyway - as they should - so I really don't get the point of the whole shxxstorm.

Mercedes took two wins out of the last three races. This is after their secret test when nothing was secret, although load of safety guards protected the track and Lewis put on another helmet. On top of that they haven't learnt anthing they just wanted to listen to the stellar engine sound between two races.

Monaco where you can't overtake and Silverstone where Rosberg was the person to win the not retiring or have your tyre blow lottery, their first race since the test where they were having to rely on their tyre management properly they were way off the pace and Hamilton went from 1st to 5th, if that's "profiting from their test" then they would have to really **** up for you to say they didn't clearly.

the punishment was fine before it became a tyre test, as that tyre test is in part for safety reasons and Mercedes clearly didn't benefit from their so called secret test this now just looks like the FIA trying to make sure Red Bull win this years WDC and WCC
