To improve his skills and prepare himself better for F1? With his age and experience, every 100 kms in racing car counts.

Little bit OT but Lotus in not the only team in trouble. Sauber's future seems also not very bright as German media openly writes that Sirotkin "deal" has bursted. And such ghost sponsors are nothing new for Swiss team. Back in in 1994 Sauber was "sponsored" by a business magazine "The Broker". It was rather complicated story which involved not only Sauber but also the allmighty Daimler which was back then heavily involved in the team. Eventually Daimler CFO lost his job and Daimler pulled the plug at Sauber jumping to McLaren with their engines.
I couldn't find any English material about the case but German media covered it extensively:

Is this different from earlier media expressing the same thing a month(?) ago?

Sirotkin was announced 4 months ago. Kvyat like 2/3 weeks ago. Both need(ed) a superlicense and Kvyat obtained one allready!
Wouldn't surprise me if the Sirotkin deal is off indeed..

I really don't understand why people bring up superlicenses all the time, it's a total non-issue. Kvyat I believe got one for winning GP3, good on him. Sirotkin, or anyone else for that matter, can get one with 1 test day, whoop de doo.
That he hasn't got one yet is because... Sauber haven't tested yet as there's a test ban. The deal may be off sure but the license doesn't mean anything. I don't believe it was ever announced he'd take part on FP sessions this season?

I didn't want to click on the link as I'm low on Autosport views lol, but okay I've done that now. Fine they can get a superlicense by driving an old car, I didn't know about that detail. What's the big deal then, Sirotkin can get one if he's given 2 days with an old car too.

Apparently Sauber is still not over its financial problems.
They haven't paid their electricity bill. Altogether there are 57 open debts.
