Hmm, back to Europe from Japan, then straight back to India. It's been done before of course, but this reminds you how stressful their lives can be.

(I'd trade with them, don't worry.)

Autosport link: Mercedes finds cause of Nico Rosberg's Korean GP front wing failure

No," he said when asked by AUTOSPORT whether he is concerned about a repeat of the failure.

"It [the design] has been there for eight years and it has never been a problem, it's just a very strange, unusual thing.

"I do [know what the problem was] but I don't know what to share. There was a fault in the material and that was it."

Weird.

Toto Wolff about the new engines.

"A month ago I was in Maranello and saw their engine factory and thought: 'German engineering ingenuity against Italian improvisation and French laissez-faire'."

Lol, if Toto is really thinking at that level of national stereotypes he's in the wrong game.  Brixworth is in the UK anyway, along with the rest of the Mercedes F1 team  :drunk: .  Maybe he was being ironic...

Yeah, this WDC/WCC is meaningless to me. Pirelli decided it for Red Bull.

It's a shame

I have to say that I'm impressed with the constant evolution and improvements to rear package that Mercedes have adopted with the W04.  She is becoming so tight at around the rear, so tight:

I'm just looking at the ipad app for FP3, and there are speeds for all 3 sectors:

WEB 1'32''0xx  278 307 274

HAM 1'32''1xx 273 298 268 (-5 -9 -6 wrt web)

ROS 1'32''3xx 269 297 267 (-9 -10 -7 "")

Is it surprising to anyone else how Merc can get so close to Webber's time here despite dishing away so much time on straights.  I guess RB have so much downforce that they can run low downforce (top speed) and aggressive gearing (top acceleration) at the same time but then it seems impressive Merc are still in touch

Sky commentator (David Croft) mentioned that Mark was running a lower downforce set up compared to Seb.  There is a huge difference between Mark and the Merc's and we may see the Silver Arrows stuck behind other cars for a consecutive race weekend if things don't go to plan.

They were testing a few variants of front wings and rear wings ahead of the qualifying. SkyF1 also said RBR were testing the rear wheel's hub winglets ala Ferrari.  We don't know which variants of the wings both drivers would be running in the qualifying today.

Ted K just mentioned that Mark is running a lower downforce rear wing than Seb heading into Q1.

Good to see that they found some pace in Q3. It looked like they were slower than Ferrari for the majority of qualifying.

Awful, just Awful, if they continue like this they will even lose the 3rd place to Lotus.

and Mercedes will probably lose it.

Lotus is simply superior car at the moment.

But Mercedes track operation... well no words for it.

If Lewis stayed in the race  I'm sure he would have stayed ahead of at least 1 Lotus, if not both

Another disappointing weekend for Mercedes, really hope they can sort it out for the next race.

Saying that both RB drivers and Grosjean were definitely out of reach  today, so a 4th was the maximum which isn't that great considering the pace of the car only a few races ago.

Not really, IMO Hamilton would have been ahead of the ferraris & at least Raikkönen.

Apart from the Lotus becoming 2nd best car, the biggest concern for Merc must be their top speeds.  Nico the slowest through the speedtraps and Hamilton, on a lower downforce setup, barely a couple of mph faster and also way down the list.  It makes defending any good qualifying position in the race fairly difficult.

Pace looked very average from the first few laps did it not

Rosberg was falling away pretty fast from the front 3, and the RBs were cruising behind Grosjean.

4th and 5th would have been a very good result

looks like the typical end season slump they always had but this time the pace of the car is not the biggest issue.

It seems Merc have banked on going very early to 2014, hoping to nab 2nd in the WDC. Lady luck hasn't been kind to them though.

i don't get this negativtiy here. Today it was unfortunate circumstances wich cost Mercedes much points, not the competitiveness of the car.

IMo Hamilton had a great start but was unfortunate, he could have been on the poduim today & Rosberg was unlucky with the penalty.

look where Rosbeg were and what pace he had.

Grosjean was the oynly drivert within 40sec of 1st RBR, bar Webber

Rosberg went for a different set up. Grosjean was not unbeatable. IMO 3rd would have been possible for Hamilton

You mean the Rosberg who had a drive through penalty and a dangling front wing?

With no problems today, we could have had an easy 4-5, which would have been massive in the fight for 2nd.

Ferrari did not look too strong& Raikkönen too. Mercedes still can get 2nd WCC & Hamilton 3rd in WDC

Not good for Mercedes today...I can't believe the bad luck that Lewis has...it seems to have followed him from McLaren to Mercedes. Unbelievable. :|  And that unsafe release for Rosberg was just careless. I don't hold out much hope for India but hopefully Abu Dhabi and Austin will be better as Lewis likes those tracks.

3rd for Lewis is looking less and less likely. Kimi just needs to have a few decent races and it will be his. It's a shame because I think Lewis has done more than enough to deserve 2nd this year (as have Merc), but small things at vital times have cost them.

Forget beating Lotus. Even keeping Sauber behind us in race will be a challenge. It's almost as if the team has given up on 2013. The only positive from this race is Lewis performance off the line. After a dismal performance on low downforce circuits like Spa and Monza I thought the twists of Susuka would be our opportunity to rise to power again - but no.

India is an interesting circuit which I doubt will work in our favour. It's full of twists but has a mega long straight where our top low top speed is likely to be exposed.

Pirelli's at their finest!  As Martin Brundle mentioned during the race, contact appears to cause punctures far too easily.  I've said in the past that these tyres are not robust enough and seem very susceptible to punctures.

They should bite the bullet and go to low profile tyres IMO: a smaller target and the sidewalls would be a lot tougher if they weren't 50% of the suspension.

The wide front wings don't help either - in the old days it wasn't so easy to touch the sidewall, the contact was normally onto the tread area.

So I hope that Merc will vote this way next time the issue comes up.  It's ironic the problem arose from a good start off the line, anyway  :( .

Thank fully 2nd in the WCC is still a possibility, though I wouldn't mind if they just stay 3rd. 5th and 6th on the cars looks cool.

Hamilton has been cursed by bad luck ever since 2009.

I can't even imagine living in a world where Hamilton has one iota of the luck that follow Vettel and especially Alonso.

Rosberg has had lots of bad luck this year as well.

Its just the team.  Mercedes have a track record of problems like this.  Will definitely need to be a big priority for 2014.
