Bob Curl has just called me to pass on the sad news that Max Le Grand, prominent freelance motor racing photographer and reporter from the 1960s era, and one of the prominent press corps extras in Frankenheimer's 'Grand Prix', succumbed this morning to cancer. Sincere condolences to his widow, Pam, and three sons of whom Max was very proud.

I knew Max from the Sixties, and found out he lived not far away from me. Over the past few years he would often drop in for a chat about "the old days'. He will be missed by a dwindling band of motor racing photographers from that era.

Sad to hear that. I knew him from his time in Eastbourne, where he acted as a 'Jack of all Subjects' reporter. Can't say I liked him at first (based solely on seeing him EVERY week in the 'local rag'), but slowly found out his motor sport involvement through TNF, and realised I shouldn't have judged him simply on the dumb stories the editor of my local paper had him cover. Later I got to spend a day going through some of his photographs, and he seemed a genuinely a nice bloke.

RIP - there was nice photo feature of some of his pictures in MS in August 2001, but the only picture of him (as opposed to by him) I can find is this one.
