Lets see what exactly did he said last year

http://www.autosport....php/id/103780/

So indeed he never said he was fighting Newey. He said he was fighting Sebastian and Newey because Red Bull was finishing ahead with both cars. Therefore, he was indeed misunderstood last year.

 Well said

I do find it funny how so many people misconstrue his words.

he might have just said what he did to the germans and the german media to make them like him again :p

... that's not what I thought tho...

I personally thought he just changed his opinion like people do

as Helmut Schmidt said: "Was intressiert mich mein Geschwätz von gestern?" "Why should I care for my words of yesterday?

What a complete non-story.

It involves Alonso, it simply can't be.

First of all the poll options are really bad. Second he's just saying that because he's taking to the germans, stop with the he's just being honest, Vettel is a great driver and he knows it, he also knew it last year and the year before, so yes saying that he was fighting newey and trying to make it look legitimate is not what i call honesty.

Technicaly he is fighting Vettel, of course. Someone have to drive this superb car. Nothing to explain.
It all depends on Red Bull car, though.

None of the above!

It was only because this race was in Germany and at the same time a German asked him this question so he back peddled A Bit from his jibes of last year. Or the article is been a misinterpretation of a few of his quotes.
By next gp's he will go back to his roots again.

Don't want to be a nitpicker but it was Konrad Adenauer not Helmut Schmidt. BTT: Firstly, it was an interview given to German press and secondly, Alonso was quoted wrongly least year, conveniently leaving out the first part of his statement.

I think he’s just stating his opinion.

More posters deleted. Last chance, cats & kittens: re-read Bourbon's opening post and then reply to this thread accordingly. Stop dragging the thread down with your general thoughts as to Vettel and/or Alonso.

Fernando Alonso a few weeks back:
"This year it’s no longer the case [that Vettel is winning because of the car]. Sebastian is ahead because he does the best job."

Fernando Alonso this week:
"Whoever goes into the Red Bull is very fast - it is a fact that it is stronger than the others."

In an interview with F1 off. site:

- Can anyone stop you?
V. - No.
- Alonso said...
V. - Do not agree with him. Every should look on his own issues first.

Perfect way of asserting himself! Bravo Sebastian.

Let´s keep reality in check, shall we? Yes he did say - and in Spanish, and in live TV- that he was NOT fighting Vettel BUT Newey.

"Sí, lógicamente lo intentaremos, acabar delante de él es el objetivo. Pero bueno, tiene un coche con el que han hecho primero y segundo en las tres carreras de forma consecutiva, por tanto es imposible luchar contra algo así. Ahora no luchamos contra Vettel, contra Vettel luchábamos cuando teníamos todos más o menos el mismo coche durante todo el Campeonato, hasta ahí íbamos liderando, pero ahora luchamos contra Adrian Newey de momento no podemos con él".

My take on his last statemenets? There´s a point when things get so obvious that you have to end up accepting the facts. Vettel´s performance is as much of a factor in the current success he enjoys as his cars. Vettel has always had doubters, and by now, after all this time performing at top level, all of them have been proved wrong, including Alonso. No one dares saying "he´s not as good as Alonso/Hamilton/Räikkönen" with a straight face anymore. And he´s had to work double to get the same credit that them.

:rotfl:

Everyone's had to work double to just keep up with the Vet/RB train. Vettel's driving has been a factor in his success, of course, but when you have the best car, which he does, it's easy to discredit the driver. I was one of those in 2010 and 2011, but he was pretty spectacular in 2012 and has been so in 2013 as well. I don't doubt his driving ability for one second, but that doesn't mean I don't think he's had it easier than the others, still.

He IS as good as ALO/HAM/RAI as it stands, IMO, but when you have a team like RB backing you, developing your car to the top, giving you the fastest pit stops, and making the best decisions on the pit wall, it's easier to drive at that level and, more importantly, maintaining it.

Alonso's always been fighting the whole RB package, what he says to the press notwithstanding.

Just as Vettel has always been fighting the whole Ferrari package.

Just as Vettel has always been fighting the whole Ferrari package.

Which, drivers aside, has been heavily lopsided towards RB for four years now.

The point went well over your head. I´m talking about the ammount of time performing at top level that it took for the doubters to list Vettel as a top driver. Example: It took Lewis one outstanding season to be tagged as top, Vettel still was under question marks for some people after 3 outstanding seasons.

I repeat: Vettel has had to work twice as much as the other 3 guys to get the same credit. He´s had to perform at world class level for much longer than the others to get the same credit and status.

I disagree, it took Alonso a long time to really get the universal credit he deserved.

The reasons for which I think so are in my post. When the team and car are that much better over the opposition, it's natural that the driver doesn't get enough credit. In my case, I changed my opinion of Vettel just last year.

This Vettel is not good enough or is not as good as Alonso,Lewis or is only because of the car is getting stupid....the fact is currently Vettel is the best driver on a best team and there is nothing Alonso can sy to change that, he just needs to do his work better with Ferrari on track. At the moment Vettel drives better than Alonso, he does less mistakes and is constantly fast. For me there is four best drivers and they all are close, even Michael Schumacher said the same last week.

He didn't have to work even half, with the car he has at his disposal.
Which is the reason of why he doesn't have the same credit or status. Still plenty of things to prove.

The opening post warned not to turn this into a general discussion of either driver and so did the in-thread mod warnings. And yet here we are. Closed.
