I am looking for photos of two cars that ran in the 1955 Mille Miglia.

One is the Maserati A6GCS of Ferdinando and Enzo Lopez, race # 625

The other is the Alfa Romeo 1900 Zagato of Vladimiro Galluzzi and 'Ippocampo' (Umberto Castiglioni), race # 415

As ever, any help would be much appreciated.

In Marchiano's "Fiat 8VZ / Alfa 1900SSZ" book, on page 86, there is a photo of the #416 (not 415) Alfa on the starting ramp in the 1955 Mille Miglia. It is identified as the Galluzzi-Ippocampo entry. License plate number is 247652MI. Does that help, or make things more difficult?

Also, in Marchiano's book "Zagato: 70 Years in the Fast Lane", on page 105, there is a picture of the #415 Alfa with the caption "Fornasari-Fortunato in an Alfa Romeo 1900 SSZ at the 1955 Mille Miglia".

The results on the WSRP site list Fornasari and Fortunato as #415 and Galluzzi and ‘Ippocampo’ as #416:

I'd guess it's the same as the one in the Marchiano book referenced by JB Miltonian in post 2.

Thanks to you all for pointing out my error.

It is a photo of the Alfa 1900SSZ #415 that I am seeking - and it was indeed driven by Fornasari and Fortunato, NOT Galluzzi and Ippocampo as I previously stated in my request. Sorry for the confusion.

I do not have a copy of Marchiano's book. and none of my books on the Mille Miglia have a photo of this car.

There is a firm in Firenze (or Florence if you prefer) which photographed many of the entries in most of the post WWII Mille Miglias. At least those that made it that far.

Sadly I cnnot lay my hands on the name at present. I believe the name begins with P. I will keep looking.

Maybe Locchi? They have a vast historic archive of sporting events in the city which includes the MM. At Florence then obviously there was Alinari which is the biggest Italian photo archive and they have documented the MM too.
Alberto Sorlini was the official photographer of the MM after the war, I believe he was (is, I think) from Brescia. His archive is now owned by Giorgio Nada.

YES!! great idea!! The a.m. Sorlini did photograph most cars at the start/finish --that would be a starting point. At least post WWII.

BUT: as there aren't any (known) photos of the first Ferraris at the Mille Miglia (only two cockpit shots), I doubt that there will ever be a complete book. And in difference to Le Mans..we have some MMs with 500+ participants...

Can recomment the new book on the Mille Miglia 1957 (minor classes). It contains of nearly every entrant one to four photographs (even in colour) and facsimiles of the entrant's application. These are very interesting, because mostly the entrants have mentioned previous race records...

Chris, I have found a colour photograph showing #625.

In Nada's (again) book ''Mille Miglia Race, the postwar years'' (1998), there is a colour photo (page 94) taken from a roof top showing 11 cars in the scruteneering bay. In the last row is #625. Red Maserati with white nose-band, two drivers aboard and the car has two headrests. Very tiny in the photo. (The caption list it also as 625). Sorry I have no scanner. Maybe some one out there has both book+ scanner.

Michael - thank you for that. Your eyesight is obviously better than mine!! I was sitting on it all along.

Coincidentally, a while back someone posted a request on another forum for a picture of the Fiat 1100/103 #152 that ran in the '54 Mille Miglia. On that occasion I was able to point them to another overhead shot on p 76 of Nada's book!!

Just received my copy of the '57 Minor Classes book last week. There are several photos that I haven't previously seen, including (as you say) quite a few in colour .... always useful for model building (which I am guilty of!!).

Rather more specialised, but I recently got hold of a copy of Les Healeys des Mille Miglia 1948-1957. Again, several pictures that I had not seen before, and a few rare ones. Back in 2009 I was in communication with the Healey owners' clubs about a picture of the Healey #37 (registration GWD 42) in the '48 Mille Miglia. The reply I got was "As far as I am aware there are no photos of 42 on the MM in 48. I have been unable to find one to date ...". There are two pics of car #37 in Les Healeys ...

I have a number of magazines and newspapers from the '50s that contain pictures of the Mille Miglia, but most are pretty poor quality. It is a pity that someone could not reprint the yearbooks that were published each year, as the originals are prohibitively expensive. But I guess that the costs would be prohibitive and the potential readership limited.

I can only confirm what you say about the MM museum. Very fast and helpful. And they have still a lot of entrance papers, results etc. Many things must have found '' their way out'', before the museum was founded...
But when you want copies of certain papers they CHARGE you heavily!!

And the famous year-books, when you find a copy are easily 800-1000 Euros apiece...

BTW, Chris, as you talked about the '' Healeys at the MM''-book: do you know the french book: '' Triumph au Mans''???Les Triumph en competition ( Tome 5) ?? by Frederic Reydellet

This book contains 30+ pages on Triumphs at the MM 54-57,with lot of photos , mainly TR3s...

Each page is a JPEG so if you're persistent, you could save the pages one at a time. Below are links to the first page of a few of the books. Click one to open, right-click to save image (Window OS). Note that the last four characters of the URL is the page number. Manually edit the URL (in your browser's address bar) to the next number to bring up the next page in the book. Right-click to save image. Repete. Like I said, you'll need to be persistent!
