Highly doubt it.

Next year you want constant tyres to learn about the completely new car chassis for next year. Even Pirelli said several times that 2014 tyres would be conservative due to the the unknown effects of the new rules.

 

Then Pirelli could produce conservative tyres just as any tyre company would.

 

See, I don't think it is necessarily a problem of any random tyre company's inadequacy to produce quality tyres, instead it is the ever increasingly non-testing issue that cause all headaches. Pirelli have been producing agreesive tyres since the day one, but these problems occured this year, which suggests that Pirelli's testing car become gradually obsolete year by year in this development craze of F1, hence the desperate need of 2013-Mercedes car test at Barcelona. This is crazy to produce tyres based on a 2- or 3-year old F1 car for use in current generation cars. Therefore, inmho, Michelin would have had similar problems in the current state of affairs.

 

FIA and teams must seek for a change in tyre testing. Change in company would hinder to see the real issue.

I don't get why people blame the FOM and FIA for making these tyres.

Yes they asked for tyres that degrade, but they didn't ask for tyre that you have to race 2-3 seconds o the pace so they don fall of a cliff after two laps.

we understand that Michelin has agreed to build the 13 inch high profile tyres that Formula 1 has demanded, rather than the low profile 18 inch tyres that are currently produced for LMP1.
This seems to be something of a milestone, but actually it makes perfect sense. At the Le Mans test day in June, Audi ran a fourth car on narrow tyres to give Michelin the live track data that it needed to build safe tyres for an 870kg hybrid, which ultimately in Toyota’s case could deliver around 1000bhp in short bursts when the hybrid system is active.

 

There are still obstacles – Michelin has always said that it does not want to be a sole tyre supplier, and the comments from Korean management suggest that a prospective deal with Hankook is off. And it would have to be a partnership, or there would be a tyre war.

A tyre war is off the card. Imagine one supplier tailoring their speccs to a down force monster for an RB10? Rivals will be indefensible.

I would love to have Michelin back. I used to love the really chunky squarish front tyres! Very noticeable compared to the bridges in 2003!

What in the world is the FIA waiting for? They should either announce a tender or sign Pirelli already. Things are complicated enough as it is for next year with the new regs.

The implications of a new tyre/wheel dimensions on next years cars will be huge, given that the teams have been basing their aerodynamics around Pirelli's proposed set up. 

Likewise, if Michelin do come it will certainly favour the teams with the money to extensively quantify the aerodynamic difference between the Pirelli's and Michelin's in the wind tunnel... 

 

My bet is this won't happen in 2014 but maybe 2015.

am i the only one who really wants to see 18 inch wheels in formula 1 (preferably low profiles)??? these 13 inch ballons are way out of date and needs replacing, this'll force the teams to re-develop the entire suspension geometry and should give wide window for setups and less dependence on tire pressure and tire characteristics .

Long lasting tyres is exactly what next season needs with all these radical changes. Otherwise it will look like a lottery run by underage clowns. In fact, that's how it looked like this season. I feel we started watching proper F1 races since, what, Canada?

 

And Michelin said a week ago they have no problem anymore with being the sole tyre supplier. The tyres will be the same for everyone so them changing to Michelin would affect the teams about the same.

It will be safer too. The wheel/tire combination will be lighter. I would imagine less punctures too. Plus they look good.

Personally I like the look of the current size, 18 inch wheels on an F1 car is too big from an aesthetic point of view. Even the 15s on the IRL cars are ugly to me.

according to bernie E, all teams have signed Pirelli extension contract, it'll be a six year contract and all the teams are happy with it. 

 

also, bernie E isn't keen on 18 inch wheels proposed by Michellin, he says it'll look ridiculous on a F1 car

i am happy with this decision, i don't blame pirelli trying to make the sport 'enjoyable' and forcing the drivers to use their 'loud pedal' skills as opposed to 'powaaa' or 'live free and die hard' style of racing. Formula 1 has always been 'strategic' and current pirelli tires force the team to scratch their head on how to extract the max out of it.

 

P.S DRS should be banned, i have no qualms on that front.

I hate the low profile look, it makes the wheels look like wagon-wheels. 

 

Plus, you lose the deep-dish - which is way more aggressive looking to me, not to mention something you can't get on a street car.   Those LMP wheels look like street car wheels.  I mean, at some point, why have air inside them?

 

I'm not sure how the harshness of them is going to work with CF suspension bits...

The Audi R15/18 (unlike the R8 and R10) has some fairly 'deep-dished' large diameter wheels which look quite nice. I agree generally though - from an aestetic point of view, a large diameter wheel with a more positive offset looks quite terrible - especially so on a formula car...

Well, the newly released Formula E car really shows how large diameter wheels w/low profile tires looks on a single seater...pretty ghastly
