Track record is definitely going to be broken when the teams switch to the softer compound tomorrow.

He's still under contract while BHA evaluate other drivers. Speaking of which, Stefan Wilson is in at Coyne for the Baltimore race.

Practice =! qualifying and race. Also, Will Power was quickest in second practice. Dixon's very strong at Mid-Ohio, but that doesn't automatically equal no competition for the win.

Luca Filippi was really quick in session 2, just 3 tenths behind Power in 5th place. I hope he will have a great race on Sunday. Always have been an admirer of him in GP2.

If that was aimed at me, it's not "don't want to", it's "can't afford it any more":

The numerous Carpenter yellows will make this one unpredictable until the end, no matter who is supposedly dominating.

I wish the Ohio race was in Cleveland instead. Speaking purely about the bit of tarmac the cars race on, Barber, Mid-Ohio and Sonoma are too similar for the calendar to need all three of them.

Don't care much for Mid-Ohio. It's not bad but there are easily 10 better circuits in America IndyCar could be going to, and maybe 15 if you really wanted to think about it.

Cleveland may be a temporary circuit but it is in a category of it's own and was usually an entertaining race. I'd take it over any race at Mid-Ohio, ever.

In general I agree (well, actually I think Indycar has the balance right) but Cleveland has plenty of history with Indy cars, and it's simply the most entertaining track layout ever conceived. Not the most challenging, or the best to watch from trackside, or the best for hospitality units. But year after year it was an amazing advert for CART, the kind of thing that could convert a sceptic in five minutes.

It was also fun and comedic and unpretentious, which is something I think we all love about this series. Anyway, I'm rambling and I promised myself not to get into a futile Cleveland uber alles debate. Can we find them a title sponsor? :p

Looks like Filippi set a pretty quick time in his qualifying group. But ruined it by dumping the car on his first lap and causing a red flag, so had to forfeit his fastest time.

I found it overrated. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this point.

There's no one thing by itself that makes a race work, though. As above, let's not turn this thread into a debate about other tracks.

Yup, that he did. It'll be interesting to see if he can salvage a good finish from the back row.

It may be overrated to some, but it's different. And that's always a selling point. It's better than having just another street race or just another road course.

The current schedule only has *3* road courses.

Anyway, judging by the Fast Six results it looks like Dixon will have competition for the win.

It could have 30 road courses, wouldn't change that Cleveland is it's own kind of track and doesn't get lumped in as a street or road course because it's really both.

Even with only three on the schedule I'd trade Mid-Ohio for Cleveland. The natural terrain races tend to be the less-exciting the past few years.

And if we're going to do California yawn fests I think I'd rather have Laguna. At least you can hide the lack of crowd better.

Then you'd have to say the same for the likes of Edmonton.

Barber Motorsports Park wasn't interesting? I agree Mid-Ohio and Sonoma are not the best showcase for Indycar action, that's why I'd support better road courses being added (and ovals). CART had 9 (including Rio) ovals on the schedule in 1999, 5 road courses if you include Cleveland and 6 street circuits. There's not anywhere near a 50:50 balance right now, especially with the doubleheaders.

And if we're going to do California yawn fests I think I'd rather have Laguna. At least you can hide the lack of crowd better.

Pretty sure the corporate backing prefers Sonoma now. Also the corkscrew strikes me as a major safety concern (especially if you think the DW12 would launch from a collision in the braking zone).

Edit: on a side note, I see Serenelli is 3.1 seconds off the Indy Lights pole time and 1.4 seconds slower than the next car. Not sure why Karam did so badly...

Unheralded championship leader Helio Castroneves is starting 15th, by the way. This could be an important championship race for Dixon and/or Hunter-Reay.

Off the top of my head,

Watkins Glen
Lime Rock
Miller
Road Atlana
VIR
Sebring
Laguna Seca
Mosport
Mont-Tremblant
Indy road course

Mid Ohio isn't bad, it just doesn't really get the blood flowing. There are a lot of circuits better or at least equal.

While I agree with much of that list, there is no way Mid-Ohio is a worse circuit than the Indy road course.

Good effort, although you're wrong about the Indy road course and Lime Rock and Sebring may not be practical.

And you missed Road America ;)

Mid-Ohio's cool though. I love the concrete wall at the Speed Trap, the mad undulating Nurburgring section (I think at the height of CART engine madness they were getting airborne there), and watching drivers rediscover every year that it's better to be on the outside going into the big turn 3 braking zone.

Wish Indycar would go to the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve like Champ Car did back in the noughties. Obviously their current deal with Bernie allows the Nascar Nationwide Series to race there, but another open wheel series? Who knows?

I doubt Bernie sees Indycar as a threat anymore. The city imposes a limit of two racing weekends per year. As it stands there's room on the calendar. Indycar, ALMS, Indy Lights & a touring car series would make a nice program. Though I wonder if its wise for Indycar to demonstrate just how much slower its cars are compared to an F1.

From the circuits I'd love to see in the Indy series, these would be my top 5: Laguna, The Glen, Road Atlanta, Gilles Villeneuve, COTA. And in fantasy land, a European race, maybe at Paul Ricard...

But there's no way to directly compare the two. Just like F1 and Indycar... until they both race on the same circuit. On the other hand neither GP2 or GP3 race there so what harm could it do?

Cleveland used to be cool. Rarely produced a dull race. Remember Montoya in the wet back in 99.
