South Africa, 1973, and after Dave Charlton clatters into Mike Hailwood, the latter's car is struck by "Regga". In the aftermath, Stewart is accused, quite bluntly by Denny Hulme, of overtaking under the white and/or yellow flag, while the ambulance carrying Clay is on the circuit.
Stewart is reprimanded, but appeals, and is let off. What was his argument that allowed him to win the appeal. I've watched the footage, and looked at the pictures and it appears fairly clear that he was in the wrong. I know I read about it in the John Player review of the year, and I am sure there is a picture in there of the very incident, but I just can't access it for a couple of weeks.

As I remember it, the complainant was Peter Revson not Denny, McLaren protested on his behalf after Pete felt that Stewart had passed him under a yellow. I haven't seen any pics or film, but apparently Ken Tyrrell appealed the reprimand that had been handed to his driver, and managed to convince the Stewards that the passing manoeuvre had been completed before the flag was passed. Reprimand withdrawn, and Jackie won the race.

Denny is quoted thus, "I had my hand up as high as I could to say I was driving slower, and no one passed me, apart from Stewart, who flew past with his foot flat down"

Excellent, thank you, I shall have a swot up later.
Denny is quoted thus, "I had my hand up as high as I could to say I was driving slower, and no one passed me, apart from Stewart, who flew past with his foot flat down"
Wasn't he cruising back to the pits with a puncture?
