The World Touring Car Championship will be burning rubber in Rio Hondo, Argentina this weekend. As always, Eurosport will broadcast the race live, but this time, they have a special co-commenttator. Dutch veteran Tom Coronel will be commentating on the race, as he is driving it, live and uncensored.

Time to pitch the idea to Bernie?

Tom is great. I've completely lost interest in the WTCC for this season but his YouTube channel is still worth watching. He is hilarious and great to the fans.

MotoGP will (probably) be racing at this track next year. So bike fans might want to give one of the races a look as a sort of advance screening.

How many more reasons do you need?

Very good performance for López on his debut. He was the only BMW entering Q2 and was almost a second quicker than the second BMW in Q1 (Coronel). I still remember when he took pole as a guest driver for Aston Martin in a GT1 World Championship race at Potrero de los Funes, in his first contact with the car. I wonder what he could have done here racing a Chevrolet.

Yeah, Tom is great. Shame he has a woeful qualy.

Indeed, WTCC has lost some momentum this season (I thought '12 was great) but I'm looking forward to next year and the new regs.

Curious to see the new track as well...

José María López takes sensational home win in Argentina

Posted Image

José Maríá López has made history in the World Touring Car Championship, taking victory in his first appearance in the championship with Wiechers-Sport, winning the second race from pole position whilst points leader Yvan Muller finishes out of the points in 13th.
López started from pole position in the rear-wheel drive BMW 320 TC and got away well at the start whilst Michel Nykjaer bogged down on the front row and was passed by Tiago Monteiro’s Honda who started fourth on the grid.
Race one winner Yvan Muller was on a charge in his RML Chevrolet Cruze, and was up to third by the end of lap two courtest in part due to a late charge on Nykjaer from Honda’s Gabriele Tarquini, though both didn’t make contact they went wide and allowed Muller straight through and onto the tail of Monteiro.

The two began to close in now on López’s Honda who had a two second lead after his quick start, but on lap five Muller tried to switch to the outside of Monteiro’s Honda late heading into Turn 5 and clipped the rear of Monteiro’s Civic, knocking him into the gravel. The Portuguese driver was able to get back on track but it wasn’t long until Muller was handed a drive through penalty by the stewards which dropped him down to 18th place to which he was able to recover to 13th but outside of the points.
Gabriele Tarquini was able to rescue the race for Honda recovering to second ahead of Tuenti Racing’s Pepe Oriola who finished as the top placed Chevrolet.
