At Ferrari: 2014 vs. Alonso, 2015 vs. Vettel - pretty formidable if you ask me

With the Kimi/Lotus thing, it's a chicken and egg standoff.

Kimi: "Show me the money".

Lotus: "We'll get the money".

Sponsors: "Show me the drivers".

Heikki Kulta (Turun Sanomat):

"[Steve Robertson] like so many of us had been expecting Red Bul to announce Ricciardo as their racing driver.

For a reason or another the Championship team is delaying it's news – and puts more rumors into circulation."

"I asked Robertson [what he thought of the comments made by Christian Horner on Thursday] and he said that an experienced negotiator knows when theres no point to continue talks anymore."

"[Lotus owner] Lopez gives an impression that the team is working hard to fulfill all the demands that need to be met for keeping Raikkonen in the team."

"Lopez ensures that whatever Kimi chooses to do, he remains friends with Kimi."

"[Lopez] also welcomed [Kulta] back to Lotus motorhome next year as well, even if it so happens that Kimi won't be there anymore…"

Reckon everyone is waiting for RB to make a decision.

I think Kimi wants to go there, but is waiting with offers on the table from Lotus, and maybe Ferrari, and even McLaren who might be worried JB has options as well.

Now if Alonso is also seriously in the mix...

Well, Raikkonen exposed Red Bull that they're the ones not talking.

So unless the team makes the move to resume negotiations, nothing will happen on that front.

Why are you so worried about Raikkonen? Or, do you just want to rub it in? Raikkonen got a net $ 35 million dollars or so over two years to indulge in a sport he always loved a lot from his childhood days (being from Finland at all). That's one of the best deals he and his managers ever pulled off. You think any other F1 driver able to get such massive support and free ride into something in which he had only an amateur experience at best.

You know the driver who should be very careful at the moment in F1? That is certainly not Raikkonen.

Kimi: "Show me the money".

Lotus: "We'll get the money".

Sponsors: "Show me the drivers".

Such a stalemate is not necessarily inevitable. Alll you need is a pre-contract with Kimi. If Kimi would have no problem signing with Lotus if future finances are secured, Raikkonen could sign a pre-contract that says if you have this, I am all yours. The moment a sponsor is signed satisfying those conditions the new contract automatically clicks in. The sponsors know that if they put in the money, Raikkonen is an automatic activation. I just think time is not yet ripe for that. Raikkonen would think there is still a month or two to make a decision of that sort.

Will Buxton seems to believe it's between Lotus and Ferrari, with Red Bull a red herring.

Buxton didn't say that during the NBC telecast. He said Lotus and that Lotus was trying to get Maldonado or rather his $$$ so they could sign Kimi.

That would actually make sense. I mean, I'm not saying it's going to happen or that PDVSA can go from Williams to Lotus that easily, but from Lotus point of view it could be something they could think about trying.

Money issues at Lotus. McLaren needs a Hamilton/Alonso level driver.

Seems more logical than any other move. Ferrari would be a bitter bitchfest with Alonso, same for RBR and Vettel. Neither are known for liking teammates who can trouble them in the WDC. Would Kimi really want a Germany 2010 or Malaysia 2013?

Raikkonen says no 2014 talks until Lotus resolves issues

Kimi Raikkonen on Friday said he is unwilling to even talk with Lotus about 2014 until certain issues are cleared up.

As he did little to assuage suspicions he actually wasn't ill on Thursday, the 2007 world champion also hinted Lotus is behind on paying him.

"Yeah, fine," he said when reporters asked if he had returned to health.

"There's always reasons for things. I don't have to tell."

Raikkonen also suggested at Spa-Francorchamps that options to switch to Red Bull or Ferrari next year are still alive.

"They (Lotus) know exactly what they have to do first, and then we are open to talk," he said.

Undoubtedly, the inimitable and unforthcoming Raikkonen was uncomfortable and annoyed as the media spotlight burned brightly.

"Why should I talk yesterday (Thursday) and today say the same thing?" Brazilian correspondent Livio Oricchio quoted the Finn as having said.

Oricchio, writing in O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper, said Raikkonen was "clearly annoyed by being in front of the dozens of reporters in the Lotus motor home".

"He started the interview half an hour late and would not speak loud enough so that those more than five feet away could hear a single word," he added.

The most concrete piece of news from the gathering was that, despite his manager Steve Robertson saying talks with Red Bull had collapsed, Raikkonen had a slightly different take.

"I have no answers from them and I am waiting to hear from them personally what they are going to do," he said.

Raikkonen would not be drawn on the rumours also linking him with his former teams Ferrari and McLaren.

Many insiders, however, think Ferrari would be reluctant to pair him with clear number 1 Fernando Alonso next year.

In fact, the Spaniard said 24 hours ago that he would prefer to keep Felipe Massa alongside him, as the Brazilian had beaten Raikkonen in 2008 and 2009.

"It is his opinion," Raikkonen responded, "and everyone has the freedom to say what they want. As I do."

And what about the suggestions Alonso would veto the move altogether?

"You'd have to ask Alonso," Raikkonen answered, "although I don't think that it is his option -- nor mine."

I have to put all my hopes on that possible (?) move from Kimi to Ferrari, as i'm fed up with Lotus really.  Doesn't matter what they manage to achieve with relatively much lower budget than other teams.  The bottomline is Lotus won't give him a shot at the WDC.  Not in 2013, not next year.  And Kimi knows damn well, despite his sympathy for the team.

I can only see him getting slowly nervous now with the RBR - RICC deal to be announced and only Ferrari remaining as a solid option for next year.  McLaren?  Dunno...  that team looks to me as they're facing two transition years to come before they'll really have another good shot at a WCC/WDC.

If Kimi to Ferrari doesn't happen, ànd Lotus not coming up with something really convincing money-wise, knowing Kimi he might as well quit and have a go at any other motorsport he likes.  I'm getting very very pessimistic.

Yes Ferrari are back to even or better than RBR again.  Same as earlier in the season.  Don't worry, Kimi will be at Ferrari next year   ;)

I have the feeling that he won't return to Formula 1 next year. I don't believe the Ferrari rumours and I can see Lotus signing a cheaper driver, like Hulkenberg, to replace Kimi for 2014.

Lotus has been on par to RB throughout the season as was in the last season....they simply doesn't have the likes of Alonso or Hami... ;)

Honestly, right now it feels like he'll retire. RB signed Ricciardo (I'm sure of it), Ferrari doesn't look to me like they are interested and Lotus doesn't have a money. I'm thinking that Lotus's gonna go with cheaper driver because of the money issue.

I'm not relaxed at the moment. I'm not ready to see Kimi retire again. :(

As much as I hate Ferrari and like Lotus, I support Kimi in the first place and I'd rather see him in Scuderia. Alongside Alonso, Massa or whoever else - it doesn't matter to me.

well.. you can also say that Ferrari has been on par to RB throughout 2010 and 2012 but they didnt have top lvl drivers. one of them lost his speed after an accident and another one is so pathetic that he lost to a rookie once and then left the team to avoid facing him again next year

I hope you agree with me on this :rotfl:

it feels like 2009 all over again, that Kimi is / was negotiating with every top team.

i hope this time he'll go back to Ferrari (now that Red Bull is not available anymore)

Lotus may want him but I dont think Kimi wants to stay in a team that cant fight for wins/championships. He has 2-3 years left in F1, so it might be better for him to go to Nascar/WRC than to rot in a midfield team for the remaining time of his career.

At the moment Ferrari is more a step sideways than a step up from Lotus. The only team to be in if you want to win the chapionship is Red Bull, and as long as Vettel is there there will be room for no other top driver.

calling a team that gave him 1x 1st, 5x 2nd in one season, a midfield team is a bit hmm odd.
