According to some Italian media Pat Fry has not met expectations at Maranello and his relationship with Alonso is 'non existent'

This makes the nabbing of Allison make more sense.

I could imagine the Fry/Alonso relationship having a lot of baggage from 2007.

Struggling with this. Wasn't Alonso's recommendation part of Fry's hiring?

Not sure about the recommendation, fact is he moved up through the ranks when Chris Dyer went axy because of Abu Dhabi 2010. He might be underperforming, particularly 2011 was a bad year for the team and it didn't get much better since then, did it?

chris dyer was 'head of race track engineering' while pat was working under aldo costa as ' assistant technical director ', how is  assistant TD a step down from head of race track engineering??? most likely he was 'assigned' chris dyer's job, rather being promoted, it most likely is just side swipe.

 

although, that being said, the organizational structure followed at ferrari is weird, they don't have a TD per say, they have different director for chasis/aero/vehicle dynamics/electronics etc

On 4 January 2011 Ferrari announced that Fry had replaced Chris Dyer as head of race track engineering (while retaining his assistant technical director position under Aldo Costa).^[8]

 

On 24 May 2011, Aldo Costa was moved to an undefined position within the team and Fry was given the job as director of chassis, with the position of technical director being removed outright.

 

Restructuring of Ferrari management made Fry's position one of three--the others being production director (filled by Corrado Lanzone) and electronics director (filled by Luca Marmorini)--to report directly to team boss Domenicali, who assumed the duties (if not the tiltle) of technical director.

 

On 23 July 2013 Ferrari announced that Lotus technical director James Allison would take over as chassis technical director as of 1 September; Fry will remain with Ferrari as director of engineering (a newly-created position) and continue to report directly to Domenicali alongside Allison and chief designer Nicolas Tombazis.^[10]

 

 

btw, what engineering credential does domenicali has that he's qualified to be reported as????

I have always mentioned that Pat Fry is next in line to be made scapegoat. I wonder when they would realize their real problem.

I have the feeling that more and more teams are appointing separate directors for their chassis and drivetrain teams.

In the top of the tree, any technical manager — be it design (Tombazis), electronics (Marmorini) or production (Lanzone) — reports to overall management (Domenicali). The overall chief wouldn't necessarily need a technical background, altough it might be helpful.
