He was always right in front of RAI, and out of the leading 3's pole lap chance. When he did his mistake he ended up behind RAI, but that didn't change the fact that he never had a chance to get in that last lap with HAM, VET and WEB.

Kimi missed it by a few seconds in the end, so I reckon Fred would've had a fairly good chance to get that extra lap if I'm not wrong?

Nonetheless, nothing anyone can do about it anyways.. just big IF's and more IF's :)

Absolutely fantastic qualifying session, no question the top three were fortunate but that was an amazing lap from Hamilton in a car that in the dry I don't think would have touched the Red Bulls.

Best lap of the day was Rosberg's by far though, he put in a couple of absolute blinders there, very unlucky.

Not sure if it's been posted before, but,

Hamilton with all 4 wheels off the track on his pole lap:

Should probably be a separate thread, unless it is clear that this is allowed at this corner. AFAIK, we had a few of those discussions in the past years, but I cannot recall the outcome.

If you followed the press conference, Webber said he wasn't pushing on the penultimate lap because he already knew he could go once more in drying conditions. Same with Vettel and Hamilton right behind him. They knew it wasn't going to be their last lap.

There's no point in citing Hamilton's 2:04.522 as evidence for his (lack of) pace, as his concerns during that lap were managing tyre temperatures and keeping a gap to Vettel in front of him for the final lap that actually mattered. At the same time, Rosberg was going all-out on his last lap. Of course he was faster.

No, I didn't see the pressconference, but it was already clear to me that Webber took it slow in his penultimate lap. Hamilton didn't have time to do so, there were barely 2 seconds left when he passed the line. Btw, Rosberg was only 15 seconds behind him when he did his two amazing laps, so circumstances were not very different for him.

Could you screen shot every other driver though that section, i guarantee at least half the grid will have done that exact same thing, maybe even your man Vettel.

Punish Hamilton and punish Vettel if he did the same.

With great speed comes great hair loss, in the case of Seb and Lewis.

Massa for one did it.  I think most drivers are taking that line.

Just because he hasn't been punished, doesn't mean that his moves weren't unsportsmanlike. His stunts in 2008 and 2009 would have definitely earned him penalties with 2012-13 stewarding.

"Definitely" and "2012/13 stewarding" don't belong in the same sentence. According to Ben Edwards in his commentary on FP3, the stewards had explicity warned drivers that if they exceeded track limits on a qualy lap their time would be deleted. That hasn't happened. In Hungary Grosjean had the book thrown at him for making a pass off track even though he had an arguable case that the guy he was passing forced him off, but the same rule didn't apply to others, and nothing was done about people exceeding track limits and nurfing their rivals off the track when rejoining. Don't be surprised if premeditated excursions onto the run-off at the exit of La Source on lap 1 are similarly ignored, but at the same time don't be surprised if a driver who is forced wide and used the run-off gets penalised. We might as well have a National Lottery-type machine that randomly selects car numbers for track-limits penalties, as the stewards have literally no idea what they're doing when it comes to track limits.

Do you mean me? It could well be that other drivers did it in the same way and I also don't think Hamilton gained that much there. In wet weather those risky lines are often not take on purpose, but are most likely small mistakes.

Whatever it is, I just felt that it's better to discuss it in a separate thread.

Had Alonso not messed up he would've gotten another chance to do another lap.

HE messed up, not the team.

Looks like Hamilton only took this line on this particular lap, it was not his normal line. It's the inside of the corner, so he's clearly cutting the track. According to the rules they should skip his laptime, but might be too late for that.

His mistake didn't matter at all because he didn't have fuel enough for one more lap. He said that himself, look in ferrari thread.

Nice screenshot, but I'd advise everyone to watch the lap itself. It is hairsplitting to say the least. May be a fun thread though. Horner himself wouldn't call for a penalty for that.

Probably, but it wasn't only Eau Rouge that drivers were putting all 4 wheels beyond the white lines.

The following shows some very interesting footage of the Q3 from onboard the Ferrari's, Hamilton's Mercedes & Vettel's RBR car:

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=GOKm2RKxyCU

On his first lap Lewis makes a mistake at Les Combes.  On his second lap he backs off in the middle sector for no clear reason, so it appears he may have saved the tyres for a final run.

What Ferrari did with Massa, a quick pit stop for inters, why did no one else do that? It seemed like the best thing to do.

I guess it was Alonso who caused yellow flag earlier on (only one posting +10sec lap)? And he was running in front of Kimi up to that point. So his mistake maybe cost himself and Kimi (if Kimi had to lift) the last attempt.

Probably, just seems strange. All cars had only done 1 lap at that point. In changeable conditions like this it's worth more to be out there on the right moment.

Hi, I couldn't watch qualy today but I heard that diResta set his Q3 lap on inters. Does that mean that if tomorrow race start is dry he can choose his tyres?

If qualy was wet and race dry AND vice versa they can ALL change tires.

I think they were caught out. Originally they were all planning to do two Q3 runs like they would normally do (with just enough fuel). Then they saw that it slowly starting to drizzle. They were probably out again to very close to being out. Hence they had to come back and put more fuel. If they had managed to get a lap in, it would have been faster than di Resta's and nobody may have bettered even at the end of Q3.

Was one of the best qualifying sessions I've seen in a long time... ironic that it seemed impossible to determine the best time to do a run in Q3, yet after all it was the time that it's always best: right at the end.

I'm not saying it's technically too late for that, but it would be wrong to give penalties on the next day .. for sure I'm not asking for that... but fact is that he's cutting the inside of the track, but maybe they talked about it in the riders briefing and others were doing it as well (Massa was for sure).. I've seen many onboards where people were just keeping 2 wheels inside the white line though...

but tell me where I'm wrong instead of getting personal.
