He makes Nelson Piquet look likable.

But Piquet was probably only disliked by the British public because the media portrayed him as an evil genius, and because he beat Mansell as teammates. I bet he was very popular in Brazil and other countries. A very similar story to what you see with Vettel now

The main downside with Vettel is the same thing that has had a deleterious effect on racing - championship mentality.  Turning Grand Prix racing into accountancy.  He's more interested in winning titles than leaving a reputation, as if the former equate the latter.  Until he faces down an Alonso in identical equipment there will always be question marks about how good he really is.  As it is, we know that Alonso, Hamilton and Kimi all reckon they'd have his number, and they've all had more competitive team-mates than Vettel has.

If Red Bull choose Ricciardo over Kimi/Alonso it will be further corroboration that Vettel does not necessarily think he's all that.

Vettel wanted Kimi as his team mate, he openly said he was disappointed Kimi wouldn't be joining RB. He also openly said he preferred Kimi to Alonso, because Kimi is straight and honest(meaning FA is not)Vettel didn't have to say all this, and I respect him for it.

Get your head out of your backside. You know damn well that you and your kind will always be coming up with new excuses. If you (plural) truly felt like that, you would also be questioning Fangio and Ascari and Clark, but you don't. Because when it comes to them, of course there are other standards. You just make it up as an excuse to **** on Vettel and don't even have the decency to admit to this double standard.

So Red Bull picking a second driver is proof that Sebastian Vettel is insecure about his own skills? :drunk:  :drunk:  :drunk:

Why don't you get your head out of your backside and do the barest minimum of research as to whom Fangio, Ascari and Clark had as team-mates?  Moss, Farina, Gonzalez, Graham Hill, Behra, Taruffi, Gurney...all of whom in a different league to anyone Vettel has faced.

If Vettel beat Kimi vel sim in equal machinery I would be happy to acknowledge Vettel's genius.  Till then, I reserve the right to scepticism.

Are you sure Webber is inferior to all those blokes you mention?

The problem is that Webber was rated very highly. Many people wanted to see him in a top team and people were impressed with his qualifying laps. That was until about 2010, when Vettel became a disliked driver among F1 fans, which also meant Webber was suddenly considered as a rubbish driver.

Think back to 2008 Monza qualifying. Vettel first, Webber third, Bourdais fourth. Did anyone think that omg these rubbish drivers lucked into a great car and that's why they are at the front? Big no, because they were not disliked at the time and F1 fans did not have an agenda to downplay them. Most people were impressed that wow, if these chaps are given a chance in a fast car, they can really deliver. Kovalainen was viewed as underperforming in second place.

I'm not convinced this is anything other than a "driver's topic", but as we're all enjoying the new forums, I'll give it some time to grow into here, but be warned what's gone so far isn't enough for this to remain open much longer.

Sadly, MM's warning hasn't been heeded. Closed.
