Robert Barker, motor sport historian and valued member of this forum, has died. The news came to light when another TNFer spotted this news item relating to his funeral:

This is more very sad news. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Saddened to read here of Robert's illness and passing.

Even though it was only through emails and eBay Robert was a thoroughly helpful motoring enthusiast. Happy to share info with fellow enthusiasts. Even if they were the other side of the globe.

The fact that he hadn't had anything on eBay since mid-July made me think he was on holidays. Unfortunately it was far more serious than that, but kept it private.

My condolences to his family and friends and great to read in the link Tim posted of his final journey around Goodwood. Worthy of his own lap record!

Like Stephen, I had noticed Robert's absence from eBay and had assumed he was taking a summer break.  What a shock to learn the truth.

Robert is best known to collectors beyond this forum as one of eBay's stars - my programme collection is full of his finds especially rare pre-war items such as 1936 Albi GP and the rarest of 1940's items.  He used to appear in Southampton at the Transport Fair at the Novotel sharing a stand full of programme and book gems.

A nice man who many of us will miss greatly. RIP

You've summed things up very nicely Tony.

Robert unearthed some great stuff that made you keep checking his listings. I'm just glad I'm not a major collector of Lotus material. Because I'd be even more broke if I was, due to the number of Lotus photos he regularly listed. He was also happy to do a deal off the the system if he knew your tastes. He'd put a price on something and if both were happy a deal was struck. I got some rare Cooper stuff like that.

Many thanks, Stephen!

But strange that the author of the article about the Goodwood circuit tribute (via Tim's link in the initial post from August 24th) wrote he "died three weeks ago".

Reinhard, I had seen that 3 week mention in Tim's link. But by chance I have been in contact with a good friend of Robert's, Jonathan Ranger. He was in the funeral procession around Goodwood and at the Goodwood Revival, he helped RWB's son, Adam sell his dad's main collection.

So I asked Jonathan when Robert passed away and the August 12 date was confirmed.
