Hope it's okay, when I post it here:

@f1enigma: According to Lopez, Kimi's issue for renewing is that Lotus shouldn't be a customer team in 2014 http://t.co/gD4Y43n2wV

Wow, look at Kimi leading and driving his team on to better things! Even sacrificing his wages while at it!

So he basically says, he wants to drive for Renault and not for some Lopez guy.

well but Lopez is in talks with Renault isn't he? or I read so at least.

Well the other possibility is that Lopez would buyout Lotus car manfacturer (but I believe they are on uprise nowdays tbh)

So Joe Saward was right in this case then. Very interesting development indeed.

It's very import for Kimi to get a good engine deal, which means that Lotus should try to get the same status as Red Bull with Renault.

To get this, it could be difficult, because Lotus has still some open invoices for the Renault engines.

Yeah but does renault want to commit fully in the f1 again? Propably the left because of the Piquet Singapore scandal too and besides Im not sure if the crisis in the car industry is over....

Other than that, the paradigm of driver roles seems to be shifting..Mercedes have taken the initiative by pairing up two very equal drivers..how can Ferrari possibly go into 2014 and expect to compete with the likes of Ros/Ham with Massa still onboard.

I'm not at all sure about that. McLaren, maybe, but RB, Mercedes and Ferrari are IMO trying to do one star + supporting act. Of course what you need for that is your star driver really doing a distinctively better job 9 out of 10 times. Vettel and Alonso do accomplish that for some time now, Hamilton appears on his way but not quite there yet. I don't think any of those 3 teams fancies their drivers taking points from eachother and thereby compromising WDC chances. What they ideally want is one driver always in front and the other no more than 3 tenths or so behind and content with it.

Problem is that López tells a lot and only a tiny part of what he says ends up being true. I suppose, it's his job to do so.
That said, it would make sense from Räikkönen's point of view to try to be in a manufacturer's team, guarantees of money and quality of the engines are better. And if it's the team were he's already happy at the moment, it would be a pretty good solution.

If you don't mind, I would also quote you in the E21 thread regarding my thoughts on a possible re-take of the team by Renault.

I'd say Renault is pretty tidy with Red Bull for the coming years, so don't see Lotus becoming a works team anytime soon. The best they can hope for is being first in line like McLaren has been with Mercedes since 2010.

Clearly a lot of observers see 'works' support as absolutely critical for this 'new' formula, I've read it so many times now. Many people seem to be expecting 2014 to be all about the 'power units'/engines. And that this will be the deciding factor in performance. It's interesting. I wonder if it will be the case.

I wonder if this is more about getting paid than anything. They all have the data, and the same hardware.

Its not exactly. Where they think the benefit is, is that teams with work contracts can request the shape and size of the engine to fit it within their car design and know this from a early stage, where as customer teams get what they're given and have to build their car around at a much later stage then a works team

There were some rumours that the Renault V6s will be rebadges as Infinitis in the Red Bull. Even now, the Renault presence on the car is dwarved by that of Infiniti, so it'll be hard to sell them as the Renault works team to the average viewer. So if Renault wants a real "works team", Lotus should be the obvious choice for them, especially considering the history of the team. Then again, it would still be a Lotus-Renault.

Interesting. And it will be interesting - but probably difficult - to see how much of an advantage that brings.
