Last year, F1Racing celebrated its 200th issue. In it they asked readers to rank the years 1996-2011. So I thought I'd do the same. Rank the 13 Formula 1 seasons we had from 2000 till 2012 from most exciting to least exciting.

13. 2002

Probably the single most boring year in the history of the sport. Utter domination on behalf of Schumacher, no title fight, and Barrichello embarrasingly treated as a #2 driver, not to mention that the racing was generally dull.

12. 2004

The only difference between it and 2002 was that at least ‘04 had good battles for second place between BAR, Renault, Williams and McLaren; along with a few good races.

11. 2001

We had glimpses of a championship fight early on, but that quickly diminished when Schumi ran away with it, as McLaren and Williams were too inconsistent.

10. 2011

The championship was just as dull and boring as 2002 and 2004, but at least we had plenty of competitive racing. In fact, I don’t think any single season had as many great races as 2011. Canada, China, Germany; you name it.

9. 2005

Although Alonso didn’t dominate the season, his WDC never truly looked under threat, with McLaren’s poor reliability. We had a few good races though, such as San Marino, Monaco, Canada, and Japan.

8. 2009

The first half of the season was Brawn domination, and allowed Jenson to gain himself a huge advantage in the championship. The second half of the season was very competitive, but JB’s WDC never looked under serious threat.

7. 2000

A great classic battle between Michael and Mika, and McLaren and Ferrari for the championship. The only downfall of the season was that it felt as if there was a lack of challenge from the  competition behind the two top teams.

6. 2007

We had an awesome championship fight, which was as close as possible between Kimi, Fernando and Lewis. My only two complaints about the season was it's lack of competition, no one could touch Ferrari or McLaren, and the lack of good racing (bar Canada, Nurburgring, and Japan).

To be continued...

5. 2006

A great championship battle between Alonso and Schumi, and Renault and Ferrari. We had some good outside challenges from McLaren, Honda, and BMW. Also some very memorable races such as Hungary, China and Brazil.

4. 2012

A season which started off fantastic, with seven different winners in the first seven, then the championship battle shaped up in the second half of the year. Good racing, good title battle. Overall an enjoyable season.

3. 2008

A great season long battle between Ferrari and McLaren, lots of drama on and off track, and some great future talents rising (Vettel, Kubica). Not to mention arguably the closest season finale ever in Brazil.

2. 2003

Another great season where we had three drivers (Schumi, Kimi, JPM) from three different teams competing for the world title. The on track racing was great and so was the championship fight. Lots of memorable races in Brazil, Silverstone, and Japan.

1. 2010

We had a four way battle for championship, constant good racing, plenty of great drives, and some very memorable races (for good or bad reasons). In Formula 1, while perhaps no year is perfect, but 2010 was probably closest to it. This year had it all.

2010 and 2012 IMO. all other years, we had only either 1 or 2 established championship contender teams (i.e mclaren and ferrari but also williams in the early 2000s and RenaultF1) . however, years like 2003, 2005 (special mention), 2006, 2007, 2008  were good too.

but the ups and downs of 2010 and 2012 were perhaps the most memorable, we had the emergence of RBR, close battles between El toro and Der Finger, newey vs the world. dominance of exhaust gasses and the dramas and the controversies.

on the other end of the scale, i'll pick 2004, 2011, 2009 to be the most boring years since i've started watching F1.

2002 and 2004 got me asleep a few times. 2007 was good just to watch Lewis after the best start ever for a rookie having a melt-down in the last 2 races. 2008 was fun watching the FIA trying to deny Hamilton the championship, and Massa nearly winning it. 2011 was special for me but probably a really boring season for most F1 fans. 2010 was quite good but it seemed like nobody wanted to win the championship - error-strewn season for the title contenders. The most memorable was perhaps last year but that is probably because it is still fresh in my mind.

I don't remember 2010 being that good. I remember it was impossible to pass and there was little action on track. So that FIA demanded new tyres, which are not super-hard, because due to the ban of refueling there was even less action than there used to be! The only thing that was close, was the points table. Same with 2007. Points were close, but very little real racing.

I'd say in terms of racing AND championship 2003 and 2008 were good seasons. It was certainly helped by the fact that in 2008 in particular there were lots of wet races. We also had a weird safety car rule, which shaked up the order and created some mess.

I can't believe 2007 is leading the poll. The worst F1 year I can remember by significant margin. I guess selective memory works. People remember how exciting the championship fight was, ignoring how stale the pecking order was and how boring the average race could be those days. Or maybe the only thing they care is the title run. I hope those days will never come back.

Didn't watch F1 pre 2006, so I can't rank all of those years. My favourite year was probably 2009. So much unpredictability, the pecking order could change significantly from week to week, all teams apart from Toro Rosso were podium contenders at some point of the season.

So my ranking can only include 2007-2012 and it looks like this:

1. 2009

2. 2012

.

3-5. 2008/2010/2011- all pretty close, all had some good and bad points so I find it hard to differentiate them. 2008 had pretty dynamic pecking order, 2010 interesting championship fight and 2011 some very exciting races for me.

.

.

.

.

If we are talking about the points battle for the drivers then...

1. 2007

2. 2008

3. 2010

4. 2012

5. 2003

6. 2009

7. 2000

8. 2005

The rest were forgettable

13. 2002

Most boring season, though close with 2004. Still had the old points scoring system, so Schumacher had nailed if after Magny-Cours, how ridiculous is that. He finished first or second in every races, bar one where he finished third.

12. 2004

Also quite boring but wins it over 2002, because at least we saw Trulli, Montoya and Raikkonen win a race too. And it was the breakthrough season of Jenson Button which was nice. A new face at the front.

11. 2011

Schumacher like season where Sebastian had a dominant car. Season where only Jenson could keep a bit close to him. And it was Lewis' dismal season where he crashed a lot.

10. 2001

Not much fun either, it was the first season where Ferrari's dominance came through. DC was the only one to stay a bit close, but also couldn't match Schumacher. To my regrets it was Mika's last season in F1, and a disappointing one. Though he managed three wins (yes I'm counting Spain as well)

9. 2009

First season of new regulations, but not much excitment at the front. Dominant first part of the season by Button didn't make the championship much fun. Only high really that the entire field most of the time was within 1 second in quali, never seen before.

8. 2005

Alonso in his Renault made full advantage of an unreliable McLaren and by the time they had that sorted a bit, Alonso could cruise to third or second places in races. Season thus wasn't that exciting with Raikkonen playing catch up all season long, only to be wiped back with another engine change after quali.

7. 2007

Loved this season, because it was when I first went to an F1 race live. Still put it in 7th though, because it was a bit of the same as 2005. McLaren really had it in the bag with Ferrari a close second. Only the climax in the last two races made the season that exciting.

6. 2003

I remember this season as the one where McLaren, Ferrari and Williams all had one driver fighting for the championship. Season was very exciting, and Kimi with his one win, still had a chance to be champion at the final race. If only Barrichello had retired that race....

5. 2006

Battle between Alonso and Schumacher, a bit similar to 2005 with Ferrari in the McLaren role, though much more exciting. I believe at one point Schumacher even had the lead in the championship. Still remember that blow up in Suzuka which cost him.

4. 2000

Epic battle between Ferrari and McLaren, and more between Hakkinen and Schumacher. Schumacher winning the first three races and Hakkinen retiring at two of them. Then came the mid season where Schumacher retired a few in a row. Hakkinen leading after Spa, but then came Schumi with four wins in a row, sealing Ferrari's first championship in years.

3. 2010

Very exciting season which had four drivers within a chance of winning the title in the last race, unique. Alonso looked to have it in the bag, but lost of in the last race to Vettel who had never led the championship that season.

2. 2008

Really loved this season, which wasn't known for it's faultless racing. Both Massa and Hamilton made mistakes after mistakes and also Raikkonen's supposedly loss of motivation was a factor. What I liked most was this was the last season before the new regulations and the horrible look of those new 2009 cars. Making it the last season where cars looked fancy and nice.

1. 2012

Best of the last thirteen years. Many drivers winning races, Williams one of them. Also bizarre races where we saw Saubers on the front row, Williams on pole and more. This made it very exciting and it was always a surprise who would be best. And a nice climax at Brazil with Vettel playing catch up all race.

4 of the last 6 years have been really good and even this years isn't as bad as some people say.

Out of the last 6 seasons I'd say 2010 > 2007 > 2008 = 2012 > 2011 > 2009

2008 was the best for sure. So many classic races, interesting battles and so on.

Then comes 2010, 2003, 2000, 2012 and maybe 2006. 2001 and 2005 were alright.

2002, 2004, 2007, 2009 and 2011 (along with 2013) are forgettable.

2000. This season had it all, with unexpected winners (Barrichello at Hockenheim), great battles in midfield (Fisico, Trulli, Frentzen, Verstappen) and a dramatic fight for the title. When racing wasn't as artificial as it is now.

I think 2010 and 2012 were the best seasons, with 3-4 top drivers fighting for the title,  with 5-6 world champions on the grid.  That makes Vettel's titles even more impressive, to be honest. And both seasons had nice dramatic last races. 2007, 2000, and 2008 were very good, as well.

I'm watching F1 since 2006 and I'm quite lucky. Only in 2009 and 2011 the championship was over before the final round.

2012 is the best for me, a lot of teams capable of victories, podiums, superb racing in many rounds. Only DRS had too much effect on some GPs. 2007 and 2008 are leading the pool, maybe fans in the UK prefer two teams fighting for the title between 2 rather than 4 teams. Or Hamilton's presence in the title fight is very important for them. Even racing wasn't spectacular in these seasons. OK, it was good, but nothing spectacular.

2010 a classic???

Sure the championship fight was interesting but the racing was dreadful apart from maybe Oz, Spa and the RBR Turkey brainfade.

2003 and 2008 were the best IMO.

2000

Classic championship battle. Did watch F1 but was so young that I cant the races properly. I've watched the FIA reviews a few times, though. Too bad Mika's car blew up at Indy...

2001

Ferrari did great, Mika was lost, DC had a strong start for the season but had then some bad luck and not so good performances. Williams' drivers and team should've done better with the car they had.

2002

Super boring season with dominant Ferrari. Races like Austria and Indy made it even worse. I don't think the Ferrari car was as dominant as people thing though, Montoya had a lot of poles but Ferrari had better tactics and Williams screwed the races pretty often.

2003

Good season after introducing the new points system. One of the few 3 teams & 3 drivers championship battles I can remember. Again I think Williams could've done better, Kimi did pretty much the maximum with the MP4-17D. Schumi was a lot more vulnerable after many stunning seasons.

2004

Rise of BAR was pretty good, but still a poor season.

2005

A few good races but in the end wasn't very good season. Alonso and Räikkönen did fantastic champion worthy seasons. Too bad the McLaren was so unreliable the points gap never decreased enough and made the fight that exciting. Desperate run from McLaren.

2006

Great championship battle, didn't follow the sport that closely this season though. Hungary was fantastic.

2007

Exciting last part of the season and the first underdog to clinch the championship in last race since 1997. But the racing wasn't very good and it was so difficult to pass.

2008

Yes - the title fight was very exciting until the last race. But the cars were the ugliest ever and were horrible trains going on a railway line. Not much passing and the level of racing was poor. Massa and Hamilton made a lot of mistakes, Kimi drove his worst season and was very bad in qualifying on mid-season which cost those days a lot. Some nice races on the 2nd part of the season.

I believe it is in the "How to be a Sports Fan" manual we were all given when young.  :p

I voted 2000, although there were lots of other great years too.

It's not the outcome of the championship I was referring to, it's the fact the season would have come down to the last race.

You have to keep in mind that different fans like different aspects of racing.  So what might be a 10/10 for me could be a 1/10 for someone else.  Incident ridden races is a good example - I hate um, others love um, so that would be a differentiator when rating a race.

This is what I make of it:

Championship battle

2001: 4/10

2002: 1/10

Outcome:

I meant to vote 2012, but accidentally clicked 2011. Oops!

Anyway, 2012 was the best. Despite Vettel taking the crown YET AGAIN, it had some amazing racing. The fact that we had so many winnners last year was absolutely staggering. It was such a thrill to never know who was going to win!

It is interesting that if people rate by gut feeling, then in the opening posts of the thread 2012 hardly comes out on top. But I see that in analytical form of combining championship battle, unpredictability and racing criterias 2012 comes out on top.

In terms of unpredictability having underfunded midfield teams like Williams or Sauber fighting for wins has been a very rare occurence throughout years, I think only 2009 can match or even beat it with the Brawn/Red Bull shock and Force India pole position. Racing itself with DRS and Pirelli was probably better than many years with no-overtaking. Though several people liked that "pure racing" era more even if it meant little action and car-trains. Championship battle has seen better years I think. People got a bit bored, when Vettel won four on the trot though the finale was dramatic. Maybe this and the fact that Vettel indeed won somewhat lowers the mark and emotion for many people. Or maybe it is so fresh and people like  to remember more those seasons, when they were younger.

1999 ! ;I

I only watched 2000 part of 2001 and 2011 the last few races and 2012 and now 2013... and I was most excited in 2012

13. 2009 (Just couldn't get into it at all. Hated the look of the cars as well.)

12. 2002

11. 2001

10. 2011

09. 2004

08. 2003

07. 2005

06. 2012

05. 2000

04. 2010

03. 2006

02. 2008

01. 2007 (Politics weren't great, but they added to the drama and got everybody really pumped up. One of the great comebacks, resulting in Kimi finally getting what he deserved, and we had the birth of a great new talent in Lewis Hamilton which brought about an epic teammate battle which people still talk about today. Even with Vettel b*tchslapping the grid for fun, the sparks really come flying when Alonso and Hamilton are together on track.)

Nice idea!

+1

This is how I see it from 2007:

Championship battle:

2007: 10/10

2008: 9/10

2009: 4/10

2010: 10/10

2011: 1/10

2012: 7/10

Unpredictability:

2007: 2/10

2008: 8/10

2009: 10/10

2010: 5/10

2011: 4/10

2012: 10/10

Racing:

2007: 3/10

2008: 6/10

2009: 5/10

2010: 6/10

2011: 9/10

2012: 8/10

Overall:

2007: 15/30

2008: 23/30

2009: 19/30

2010: 21/30

2011: 14/30

2012: 25/30

This compared to my previous ranking clearly shows I rate unpredictability over a good championship battle.

It's 2003 for me - an open season with eight different winners, with some extremely good races (Silverstone in particular), a nice mix of performance variables without feeling too artifical (the first season of single-lap qualifying), a decent but not overwhelming level of paddock intrigue, and a compelling championship battle.

Good topic - my top 5 are:

1. 2010, (a close championship with lots of contenders and some good races) but 2012 is a close 2nd (maybe I have been a bit biased as the racing was probably better but Red Bull dominating the 2nd half of the season lost it a few points). Then 2003, the first season I really started watching F1. Got me hooked so must have been pretty good. 2008 next, what a finish to a season and 5th on my list is 2007 if only for the off track drama!

2010.

The races weren't always the best, but the overall championship battle made it my favourite year by far.

Same for me too. I was going to vote 2010 initially, but I changed my mind and voted 2003 instead.

Both seasons had good championship battles, 2010's WDC fight was perhaps even better than 2003's (although '03 was quite good). However, in terms of racing and unpredictability, I'll take 2003 over 2010 any day.

2007 - with the honorary mentioning of Monaco 2004, the only race i'll remember of Schumacher's boring career.

With the overall enjoyment and thrill taken into account, I can make two lists starting from 2 baselines:

1. A Ferrari fan's one

2. "Objective" one

But I can hardly be objective :-) So it is like this:

1. 2000 - what a battle, what an outcome

2. 2003 - a nice three-way fight, a fair outcome

3. 2006 - two of my favourite drivers battling it out for the title, I really enjoyed it

4. 2002 - a perfection must be admired

5. 2004 - ditto

6. 2010 - would be much higher had the final outcome been different

7. 2012 - ditto

8. 2001 - again, a good outcome but an anti-climax after the epic 2000

9. 2008 - the season when seemingly nobody wanted to win. So much bad driving by all the contestants

10. 2005 - Ferrari out of fight, McLaren dominant speed-wise, worthy for Alonso's mature driving but that was just before I started to support him

11. 2009 - a DDD exception season, not particularly enjoyable for me

12. 2011 - had I been objective, it should have been also admired for near perfection as 2002 and 2004 but I cannot warm myself up to Vettel or Red Bull

13. 2007 - politics, off track decisions, horrible driver management etc. spoiled it completely for me. Besides, with the rare exceptions, the races were boring and passing was almost non-existent

Interesting that for all the complaining there generally is about Vettel and 'Red Bull dominance', 2/3 of their championships are rated at or near the top. Seems it's not as bad as it is often made out to be ;-).

1. 2008 -  My favourite! Great season-long battle, lots of controversy, WDC won on last corner of last race by my favourite driver.

2. 2007 -  Rise of Lewis Hamilton, great battle for the WDC, Kimi finally winning his much-deserved WDC.

3. 2000 -  First WDC for Ferrari for 21 years...what's not to like! I was actually in tears when Schumacher finally did it.

4. 2006 -  Good fight for WDC between Alonso and Schumacher, with Fernando eventually coming good.

5. 2005 -  Schumacher not a factor, Alonso wins WDC, yay! ( I was a big fan of Alonso in those days).

6. 2003 -  Some good races but I really wanted Kimi to win it this year.

7. 2010 -  Lewis's problems at McLaren at the beginning and end of this season spoiled this season for me.

8. 2012 -  Bl**dy McLaren...enough said.

9. 2001 -  Unmemorable. Highlight for me was Bernoldi holding up Coulthard in Monaco.

10. 2004 - Boring dominance, but at least it was Ferrari.

11. 2002 - Boring dominance and team orders fiasco, but at least it was Ferrari.

12. 2011 - Painful season for me thanks to Vettel's dominance and Lewis's problems.

13. 2009 - McLaren and Ferrari not at the races, WDC won thanks to the Brawn's incredible superiority in the early races. Aaargh!!!

2008 is my favourite from that list. Not particularly fond of the guy who won the championship, but it was still a great end to a great season. Plenty of memorable moments through the year, including (if my memory serves me correct) three first time winners in Kubica, Kovalainen and Vettel.

Probably the most competitive year in recent F1 too, with the manufacturers that were present, and hardly any pay drivers.

How did it go wrong so quickly? :p

There are plenty of seasons that would have been boring without driver X or Y. But driver X or Y were there, ergo, the premise of "boring" "dominance" "blabla" is proving to be a whole lot of nothing ;)

Same here. I honestly cannot see how 2012 can be rated as higher than 2000, which for me was a real heavyweight battle.

I do wonder if the poll is swayed somewhat by not everyone who has voted actually having watched all of the seasons.
