lads,  word has just reached me that Cedric Selzer has his new book, 'If You've Come Second, You've Lost',  published in a few days time. With any luck, it will be available from the Horton's bookshop stand at Goodwood next week. It will tell Cedric's  story, from coming over from South Africa, getting work at Team Lotus and then becoming Jim Clark's mechanic in the World Championship year of 1963. It will also follow his story AFTER Team Lotus. The Foreword is by Jackie Stewart.

There will be a softback priced at £10, with a hardback at £63 signed by JYS. It's 200 pages with 60 rare photos. ALL profits will go to Marie Curie Cancer Care.    I'm rather looking forward to it.

Yes, he had told me all about it, plus some of the inside stories, so well well worth buying!

And I live in North Finchley and will be appearing live in the Methodist Hall, East Finchley on the 14th Sept., reading some of me poetry... Yeah, I know, my daughter thinks the same, there's something not quite manly about writing poetry...

Both Chaters and Hortons will have books for sale at Goodwood. I am trying to set up a website so you will also be able to buy books from me after the event. I will update this next week and I also suspect Chaters will also be able to supply. Remember every £10.00 goes to help people a lot worse off than us. I will be wearing my 1963 Lotus overalls  on all 3 days so please come and find me. I will also be signing books at both the book stalls, There will also be a limited number of hard back copies signed by Jackie Stewart available now but he has agreed to sign some more at the beginning of next month.

Roger, I would suggest contacting either Horton's or Chaters through their websites,  they should be able to send you a copy.

Excellent book, although I wish the photos were larger!

In my haste I bought it via Amazon from Specialist Book Supplies, who charged £15 plus the usual £2.80 postage. Having seen that they appear to have added 50% to the list price, I do hope that they are donating £5 from each sale to the charity.

Hi Cedric - I cannot find your website!! Could you possibly send the link to the address - I would prefer to purchase from your website direct.

Has anyone else had any trouble with this? Could be that I'm a little ham-fisted, of course!!

To be fair to them I suspect they are buying the book in for around £10.00 a copy, their price only reflecting the general bookshop mark-up Their selling it presents the book to a wider market and as a consequence Cedric Selzer's chosen charity is benefitting from this extra exposure. SBS and it's associated business have a world-wide market and a very long history supporting the enthusiast through publishing, wholesaling and retailing books & DVDs.

Just received my copy of Cedric's book  'If You've Come Second, You've Lost' ordered from the Classic Team Lotus website (http://www.classicte...ntent/shop.aspx)!

I had just placed my order Sept 24th and received it in Los Angeles on Sept 30th, which I consider very good service.  It is soft bound and was nicely packaged in bubble wrap so made the trip in perfect shape.

I've only just skimmed it but it looks very good--lots of interesting stories of Team Lotus.   198 pages and 66 photos, mostly black and white and many of the paddock and garages.

As noted, profits will go to Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Many thanks, Cedric!

Thanks for the correction and your contribution--I was just repeating Gary C's comment in the first post.

I read about 40 pages last night and am very much enjoying it.

My copy arrived yesterday via Classic Team Lotus, and I couldn't put it down - ended up with less than 4 hours sleep last night (still more than Cedric seems to have got on many Grand Prix weekends). Not quite finished but left it by my bed otherwise I won't get any work done today.

Just wanted to thank Cedric for a fascinating book, with honest opinions about the people he worked with, and a few insights too - I had no idea Chapman had bawled out Jim Clark in front of the public after the Silverstone International Trophy when GH pipped him to the line.

I can't recommend this book highly enough - my only "criticism" is it could have been priced higher but hindsight is a wonderful thing and it's a gem.

I've just finished it and found it very interesting/informative. Far better than the recycling of race reports that many books rely on.

I did find the lack of production rather frustrating, it really needed proof reading/editing properly.

Maybe I'm more bothered about that than most, since it is one of the hats I wear, but at some points it is a bit like trying to decipher a teenager's text message!

Still I can't really complain given the price, I would be upset if I'd bought the more expensive edition though (which I probably would have if it had been offered).

PRD....I purchased from Mr Selzer but I fear they are all gone

No 63/63 made £1100 at Bonhams Revival auction and No 1/63 made £1000 at my charity event with Ross Brawn on Sept 27th

I find the comment in the above post rather sniffy  .................the book is a wonderful diary of events told first hand and in my opinion gains credibility by not having been 'spun'

OK, Thank you. I'd have bought one as the money goes to charity.

I've been reading the standard version having got a copy from Classic Team Lotus.  Yes, there are some typos and it can be a little frustrating, but you have to remember that this a verbatim account by someone who was there at Team Lotus 50 years ago, so its pure gold. We'd be much poorer if Cedric hadn't written it, so it gets a big  from me

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Adding to what has been previously posted, this book is a highly enjoyable, first person account of the glory days of Team Lotus and Jim Clark in the early sixties. The look behind the curtain into the team as wonderfully provided by Cedric was brilliant.

Yes, the odd error or so which did not detract from the sheer enjoyment of the narrative.

I also agree that the price was far too low, and accordingly I am donating to Cedric's charity to compensate. And that from a Yank who has no real idea what the Marie Curie fund is really about!

Cedric, we would love another book from you.

Thanks Dennis and all who have posted kind words about my book. Marie Curie supplies care and nursing to people with advanced stages of cancer. Since Goodwood Revival 4 weeks ago I have raised £9000 ($13500) for this charity and a further £1000 ($1500) for a children's hospice. The 63 Special Edition copies were all sold by the end of the Revival meeting. I know there are some typo errors. So be it. The book needed a further month spending on it but I was desperate to launch the book at Goodwood as this year's feature was Jim Clark. No there will not be another book. Thanks to  all of you who have supported me and my chosen charity.

Received the book in Canada within 10 days of ordering from Classic Team Lotus. Enjoyed it very much. I wish Cedric could have expanded on some of the asides he wrote about. Many times I thought "What happened then?" and he had moved on to something else. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a terrific book and worth every penny. Glad it's going to a good cause. Good onyer Cedric!

It was an unexpected pleasure at the Classic Car Show yesterday to run into Cedric behind a pile of his books. I'd been meaning to buy one since I heard about it, so snapped one up and then enjoyed the honour of a few minutes chat with Cedric about my boyhood idol Jim Clark. Thank you Cedric, you made my day.

Ordered directly from Cedric and promptly received it in the USA. Informative and charmingly written. Unusual in that professional editing seems minimal so it truly is an intimate rememberance of the times. Like reading a diary. Well done, Cedric.

I am about to close my website down tomorrow as I have only a few books left. You will still be able to buy books from Classic Team Lotus, Chaters Books, Hortons Books, Amazon and Ebay. Thanks to all for your support and kind feed back. On Tuesday I handed over £12,600 to Marie Curie. I also raised a further £1000 for Little Haven children's hospice. There is still another £1800 in the pipe line. Marie Curie took a large number of books for their shops but I have not seen them there as yet.

Hope all you TNFers have a good festive season.

Cedric

I'm glad to say I got it for Christmas and, having now got all that out of the way, have been able to sit down...........and read it straight through. What a good read - well done, sir, and congratulations on the charitable donations.

I asked for (and received!) Cedric's book at Christmas and it is a great read, thoroughly recommended! As with most motorsport books I receive, I couldn't put it down and had to read it cover-to-cover in one sitting...

Unfortunately for me, they are charging 50 pounds to ship a 10 pound book to the US. Not happening.

Crazy!

Try asking them why.

If all else fails send me a PM with your address and I'll order one and send it on to you and we can sort out payment later.
