I doubt that anyone would be happy to see their records broken, but MS is rather pragmatic about his records, and gives proper respect to the generation of drivers of JMF.

Yet another Vettel thread? :stoned:

I think MS was always a little more sporting than many gave him credit for being. Some of his darker moments get overblown in the interest of propagating a stereotype, I think, but MS the man was admittedly different from MS the racer in a lot of ways, though.

I imagine he's not bothered if he's got them all on DVD or iTunes?

Agreed,

He has stated numerous times that what Fangio did in the machinery available to him at the time was incomparable.  These rankings of who is GOAT and such really take away from the genius of all the top drivers.  MS does make some salient points regarding the younger starting age of modern F1 drivers, as well as all the changes to season lengths, and point systems...

Those records are all about sticking around for a long time in a top team, which sadly, the likes of Senna were robbed of. Imagine Mansell with 8 years of the 92 style dominance.

Schumacher raced in almost 200  more races than Vettel has so far.

Vettel already wipes the floor with schumacher in % of pole positions and % of front row starts. schumacher doesn't hold as many records when looked at as a percentage.

Fangio won 46% of the races he entered. Schumacher 29.5%, Vettel 27.6%

Percentages can also go down. For example if Vettel will be hit with a period of drought. Back in 2006 people thought Alonso would be unstoppable from then on. He's still waiting for his 3rd title. Same with Hamilton. I think Seb will become a 4 time WDC this year, but 7 titles and 91 wins are still a long way to go.

I thought they were friends.  I would be happy if someone I liked did well at something too.

Schumacher feels that if Vettel were to break any of his records, it would be like they were "staying in the family" as they are good friends.

Last year in Brazil when he let Vettel pass him and then was the first to congratulate him, I thought he was like handing over the baton to Vettel and that he would like him to be his successor.

Seb did idolized Michael and Michael mentored Seb few ways, by being friends and all that..

I don't believe any driver will take that from Ayrton Senna as the greatest racing driver of all time, IMO....

Records are meant to be broken. And i think MS doesn't really care about records.

Secondly, it's no easy thing breaking MS's records. No one knows how 2014 will turn out to be. As someone mentioned above. Both Lewis and Alonso, and everyone else thought they will be the next big thing, but it didn't happen. Many expected Kimi to dominate when he was in Ferrari. Didn't happen either.

After Schumacher retired the first time, I thought we would never see that type of dominance again in our life time. Then '08, '09, and even '10 came along with different winners and close field, I thought I was right. Red Bull have done a great job and given their number one the car to maintain his dominance further. I hope he doesn't, but think he has a good chance of beating Schumacher in the record books. Records are there to be broken after all. :)

Watching him break down and cry in the press conference at Monza 2000 when he equalled Senna's win tally suggests that's a long way from factual.

Schumacher was not only higher rated than Vettel by the majority of his competitors and rival teams, but had far greater support from fans who adored him.  I somehow doubt Vettel has 7 titles in him unless Newey, and it's a big ask, continues to design dominant cars.  Eventually Newey will design a lemon. Then we will see how good Vettel is.

Stop kidding yourself. With you lot, there are always excuses. Not once has Webber finished 2nd in the championship, yet if we are to believe many of the comments from your side, the Red Bull has been not only the fastest, but dominant for 4 years. How will will you know or acknowledge that Newey designed a lemon? As long as Vettel performs strongly, you will always write it off as Newey. Which is fine, well, sad really, but ok, that's what you do. But don't be a hypocrite by saying such things while you know damn well it's not true.

What else is he going to say?

When has anyone said 'I'd hate it if someone broke my records'?

Especially as it's someone he clearly gets on with well.

Where was Massa last few years? I don't think 2nd drivers finishing position is a good comparison of the cars.

Schumachers records could de-value themselves over time irrelevant of Vettels achievements if people start to realise/stop ignoring the scale of advantage he and Ferrari enjoyed while they took their titles.

Theres evidence of it being more and more widely commented on. Example from today is Mark Hughes article on why McLaren havent been as successful as they should have been.

Webber is good enough that if the car was really that good, Webber would have little trouble taking 2nd. Despite quite a few negatives towards Webber, I do feel he is deliberately made out to be useless just to belittle Vettel's achievements.

As for the records, even if Seb does get this one sewn up, against the opposition he faces, he's still got to have a '2nd career' of 3 titles and 60 wins just to match Schumi

And what makes you think that Senna is better than Jim Clark, Juan-Manuel Fangio, Jackie Stewart, Tazio Nuvolari or Bernd Rosemeyer?

You can't compare drivers from different era's so claiming that this one or that one is the greatest driver ever is completely impossible

PS: noticed that you also wrote IMO, had missed that at first sight

He didn't even break a record that day he equalled Senna who was behind Prost in the record books. It wasn't about a record - it was about Senna and his dead which had perhaps the biggest impact on Schumacher's career. Quit a cheap shot to suggest this proves Schumacher did care about records. Emotional day, important win for the championship, in front of the tifosi, and be reminded there was a guy you had the biggest respect for, you just equalled in winning. a long way to believe the other way round..
