Just reported by Ted Kravitz on Sky F1, heading straight from Monza to Barcelona apparently.

WTF!

Ok, I have no problem that teams test for Pirelli but the debacle after the secret Mercedes test should disqualify Red Bull from such tests.

Are the Vettel fans going to be up in arms like they were last time over the Mercedes test?

Mercedes didn't even try make their test public or transparant . I don't know whats behind the test, pirelli test or something else, but it seems it will be done on a legal basis or do you believe RedBull would announce they will break the rules. So where is the connection between the mercedes and the red bull test?

Just like last year, they changed the tyres mid way. This GP is going to be a 1-stopper, and you don't see even MGP struggling with the tyres anymore post Silverstone.

non-factor

Mercedes got a slap on the wrist for going ahead with a secret test, at least secret to all the other teams..

It doesnt matter who announces it, it's not a secret now, it can be protested, it can be investigated earlier on if anything funky goes on, the terms are also known by now probably, it's just more transparant.

mercedes probably never intended to get caught, you cant say the same for red bull now, even if it was pirelli or whoever that announced this test.

we can see that Red bull didnt agree to a "secret" test here.. it's quite obvious that this was going to be public before the test commences.

Definitely not illegal and other teams are aware of it.

@ESPNF1 "Martin Whitmarsh confirms to ESPN that McLaren has also agreed to a tyre test with Pirelli"

http://en.espnf1.com...ory/124189.html

Hembery "It's a 2011 car, next year's tyres, I'm not sure about the driver - that's probably going to be Buemi,"

"It's 1000km as we did with Mercedes and Ferrari. We've got full FIA approval, all the other teams were invited and maybe there's another team that we're looking to organise another 1000km with that's offered their availability.

"Two days - possibly three dependent on the weather of course - but two days is what we normally do."

Let's see... they're using an old car rather than their current one, test drivers instead of racing drivers, and they're making it public instead of clandestine. Egg, meet face.

Not all fans view the sport in such a one eyed way based on who their favourite drivers are.

I'm uneasy about these tests. I know Pirelli tyres need testing, and it is a 2011 car, but I don't understand the procedures in place to ensure the team providing the car can derive no data at all. I also understand that it would be impractical to make all teams turn up and divide the running between them.

I'm not sure what the answer is, other than to have a formal return to some sort of structured in season testing, and work tyre supplier work into that somehow.

Its either that or have Pirelli build their own F1 car to test with.

It was decided tire width will remain the same as 2013 spec.

Friday's Lotus long wheelbase test was actually made to try some 2014 mods, since the weight per axle distribution will be different.

Check this heavy front wings  ... it takes two guys to carry it on.

Yeah because Vettel's not driving I don't think. Boooo! They're favouring Ricciardo already!

So how are the 2014 tyres going to be like? Ar we going to see 1-stop races from the beginning or more like in 2012-2013. First half of the season we have a mess with anyone winning with Pirelli 3-4 stop races and then late in the season 1stop races?

I'm a Vettel supporter and I wasn't up in arms at all.

Of the people who were up in arms, it looked like supporters of all drivers and teams other than Merc demonstrated up in armedness.

Yes by Red Bull. Horner said they were heading to Barca for the test in a sky interview after the race.

Just in case they get unlucky with a DNF, two or three and sneaky Alonso tries to challenge for the WDC at the last race again.

Funny, Marko just said a couple days ago that they will also dominate next year as well... Is this one of the reasons Ricciardo was chosen? He is not driving for RBR right now, but he'll be driving for them next year so he'll have first hand on the 2014 tyres and share the info with the team. Think again, 1.000 km tyre test. Masterstroke from RBR

Would not it be better to stick Sebastian in that testing role rather than Ricciardo? Sebastian knows RB7 quite well, and he should be able to detect subtle differences between RB7+2011 tyres vs RB7+2014 tyres and how each tyres behave in relation to his 2011 car.

Which seb?

Buemi is already going and they can't use current RB race drivers.

I had a brain fart. Forgot that race drivers are not allowed for tyre testing.

If everyone agrees to this it‘s fine, obviously. I‘d still prefer the high-cost, high fairness option of having proper testing with everyone running at the same time on the same track under the same conditions. I understand the reasons why Pirelli doesn‘t want all that duplication when they‘re paying for the tests, but the trouble with having the teams taking it in turns, effectively, is the benefit to be derived from one test may differ from the benefit derived from another. What if Mclaren‘s test gets rained off and they never get the chance to run the 2014 tyres before the official pre-season tests next year?

And I thought the teams and FIA had agreed that race drivers wouldn‘t run? I wasn‘t aware that‘s restricted to a team‘s own, current race drivers. That‘s not how the regulation is worded, although to be fair the regulation in question doesn‘t apply to testing with a 2011 car anyway, so arguably they could have run Vettel and Ricciardo if they wanted. But if it‘s been agreed that race drivers can‘t be used, then it is an abusive interpretation to take that to mean you can run your 2014 race driver on the 2014 tyres. That cannot have been the intention of the agreement. But then, there were intra-team agreements in place to refuse to negotiate commercial terms with CVC other than through FOTA, as well as a no-protest pact, so we already know what Red Bull‘s attitude to agreements is.
