That's good news.

Good news that it brings stability to the sport.

Bad news would be if all races are dominated by the tyres.

I'd like to see more durable tyres that can be pushed to the limits instead of being nursed and 3-5 seconds off their ultimate pace. That isn't Formula One.

The ideal situation would be to have tyres that can be pushed by drivers for some time, but that can't be raced for 25+ laps with good pace (softer compound at least). If tyres don't degrade, drivers are not going to push for the whole race either. In today super perfect F1, when we don't have a variable that is not perfect (tyres for example), relative car's performances throughout the race are pretty much the same all the time. If you're not faster than the car in front on lap5, you'll probably not be faster on lap30 or 40 either. So what's the point of pushing? They just all manage the gap and drive carefully to avoid mistakes. Unless something unusual happen.

That'll kill off the potential excitement of new cars next year.

Bad news. Pirelli gets too involved in politics and this year they gave the WDC to Vettel. Its no surprise RBR started to dominate once the tyres where changed.

Had to end up this way given all teams had a Pirelli contract already. And I commend Pirelli on the efforts they've made to make races interesting at the expense of some PR - albeit some of those efforts were clumsy at best - but a part of me wonders what would happen if Michelin came back, and can't help but be slightly disappointed.

Also one thing really annoys me about Pirelli: they make races random as hell in the first part of the season with all sorts of dodgy compound choices, then on the second half of the season they always make "safe" choices. What about some sort of consistency? Either go random all year round or go safe all year round. This way it really does feel like they're manipulating things, when tyres should be a neutral factor instead.

I'm not enjoying the last few races with Vettel's dominance but they do feel "proper" with 1 or maybe 2 stops at best rather than 35 stops. I wish they went that way all year round. With Michelin I'm absolutely certain you'd get that.

That's sensible. The idea that the FIA would bring in a new supplier even later than they did last time was just silly.

Just wondering, why would you think that Pirelli would care about RBR winning?  You;d think, if anything, Pirelli would favor Ferrari, or any car manufacture that could potentially use their tires.

Absolute rubbish. Blame the other teams for not being able to challenge, not the tyres.

Agreed with that. The racing is not top notch with that kind of conservatism but to say Pirelli rigged the WDC is one pile of horse ****.

If anything, they've tried to prevent that.

Terrible news, but not surprising in this era of standardization.   I'd have much rather seen multiple suppliers bring some actual competition to this aspect of the circus.

However, in the spirit of standardization, I hope we'll see the the number of dry tyre compounds reduced. That selection between four different compounds gives a lot of power to Pirelli which I think they should not have.

I think that's a sensible decision. The teams are likely to have enough reliability problems as it is in 2014 and don't need another unknown variable. I hope in 2014 the tyres will be as durable as the Bridgestones. We're probably going to hear too much of "save fuel," so I really don't want to constantly hear "save tyres" on top of that.

Sad news.

I support degrading tyres but not the way that Pirelli have gone about it, they shouldn't degrade by thermal ware. This just stops the drivers from pushing well creating an artificial race that was decided way before the cars hit the track on Sunday morning (Delta's). If they could create tyres like Bridgestones (not there durability but the way yet degraded) I'd support it. Drivers like Button made a record of themself for being tyre whispers and on an unsusal day could eek out one less stop (the problem was they rarely needed to make one more stop so having that advantage didn't mean much. A driver like Hamilton may be five/six tenths slower, where as button may only be down 2 or so tenths). I believe this was done by them wearin away chemically and this meant it wasn't done by the speed of the car but instead the drivers style

Now say that we take Bridgestone and increase there ware by *5. This means that Button has now got two seconds quicker tyres then Lewis ( for example). Lewis may chose to pit now and would probably have tyres gain up to 3 seconds, giving him a 1 second advantage but with an extra pit stop. This would have the same effect however button can defend hamilton as he tyres are not wrecked by defending etc.

Yeeeeah, you missed the part where there was a tyre debacle this year exactly because Pirelli tried to do the OPPOSITE of giving RBR the title.

Why is it bad news? Pirelli design the tyres to what the FIA wants. Makes no difference it's another brand, as they'll still design to the FIA's required specs.

However, I wonder, how would current F1 pecking order look like if we had the Barcelona GP tyres. On which Ferrari dominated and everyone made 4 pitstops.

Probably would look pretty much the same to be honest. The margins might be finer but I think both Redbull and Mercedes were catching up anyway. Personally I think some people are combining hyperbole with nostalgia to create a distorted idea of the pecking order, Ferrari's problems are more correlation based than tyres.

): I prefer that each team choose their supplier and that the FIA has a supplier for those who want to use them, in this case Pirelli

Best Regards!!

Pirelli avoided changing the tyres sooner, specifically to avoid accusations like this.  And then they get them anyway.  Look at what happened with the failures at Silverstone or other races.

Stupid.

It's not a deliberate decision.

It's because over time the teams adapt and gain more understanding in setup and the tyres in general and they basically develop cars that can handle the tyres better.

But I agree, they should make more extreme tyres/choices in the second half of the season to compensate for this.. or make them more neutral in the first half of the season, to compensate or the teams lack of knowledge.  One or the other.

Excellent news!  Anyone who thinks this is a bad thing needs to criticise the people who wanted the degrading tyres in the first place given it's nothing to do with the tyre supplier.  Not saying I want or like the tyres at the moment but they are designed with a brief from the powers that be!

my idea

bring all 4 tyre types to every race

let the teams pick what to use not the tyre corp

no limits on number of tyres used/supplied

and no requirement on types used

so if a team wants to no stop on hards

or 4 stop on super softs their pick!!!!!!!!!

More extreme tyres? Sounds dangerous. 10 tyre blow-outs per GP instead of 4.  :p

That'll cost a lot more, as Pirelli would have to bring double the amount of dry tyres to each race, perhaps even more if you want them all to have an unlimited number of each type of tyre. No point wasting that much money transporting all the tyres to each race, when most of them will go unused as all the teams will run the same optimum tyre compounds.

Meh. Paul Hembrey annoys me, as did the obfuscation surrounding the construction issues leading to tyre failures earlier in the year, but I don't blame Pirelli for the performance/degredation that they are asked to spec their tyres to.

My gripe with the future is DRS, so whatever.

So they bring the hard and mediums to Monaco for what exactly?
