It seems Sprint Car builder/owner/mechanic Bob Trostle has passed away yesterday (Nov 21).

Geez, I just spent a week with the grandson of Paragon Speedway's founder and a lifetime friend of Bob's… and heard many stories about Bob and his revolutions, but none of his passing. I best let him know.  :(

Thanks.

Who looks after Motorsport Memorial? The search function hasn't worked for some months and emailing them doesn't seem to have fixed it.

John Coundley (1924-2016) obituary by the BRDC:

The Club regrets to report that John Coundley passed away on New Year’s Day at the age of 91. A property developer from Ringwood in Hampshire, John initially raced motor cycles from 1946 to 1951 before taking part in his first car race at the 1951 Eight Clubs’ Silverstone meeting in a Jaguar SS100. In the early days he also raced a MG Midget R-type at Ibsley, his local circuit. John became more widely known in 1959 with the first of two D-type Jaguars which he owned, the Ronnie Hoare car, which he raced both in the UK and on the Continent. There were also a few Lister-Jaguars, the Costin-type BHL126 being particularly successful in John’s hands including winning the AMOC Martini Trophy at Silverstone in 1960 and 1962. At this time John was commissioned by MGM to provide cars for its motor racing feature film The Green Helmet. When BHL126 was crashed by another driver (also a BRDC Member!) during filming, MGM furnished John with a Camoradi Maserati T61 Birdcage to race at Aintree.
By 1963, with the writing on the wall for front-engined sports cars, John had acquired a Lotus-Climax Type 19 with which amongst other successes he won the 1964 Lavant Cup at Goodwood ahead of rising star Jackie Stewart in the Ecurie Ecosse Cooper Monaco T61-Climax and double (at that time) World Champion Jack Brabham’s Brabham BT8-BRM. Also in 1964 John shared Dick Protheroe’s E-type Jaguar to win the over 3-litre GT class in the Reims 12 Hours and the Montlhery 1000 Ks while, perhaps impressed by his Goodwood victory, Ecurie Ecosse gave John some races in its Tojeiro-Ford V8 which included a victory at Brands Hatch.
Although mainly competing in larger-engined sports cars, John also raced a Lotus Elite in the early 1960s including a Team Elite car shared with Frank Gardner at Le Mans in 1963 when they retired. Two years earlier John had finished fifth in the 1300cc Coppa Inter-Europa 3 hours at Monza, the lone British entry among hordes of Alfas and Abarths.
For 1965 the 19 was replaced by a McLaren Elva-Oldsmobile M1A with which John won the sports car race supporting the British Grand Prix at Silverstone and the Whitsun Trophy at Goodwood ahead of the Ford GT40 of Roy Salvadori who was having his last ever race. Poignantly it was Roy who had seconded John for BRDC Full Membership in 1962, his proposer being a certain James Clark Jnr. John retained the McLaren Elva for 1966 which was his last season.
The BRDC extends its sincere condolences to John’s family. There will be a private funeral for family only.  Members are invited to a burial of John’s ashes on Monday 18 January at 3pm in Lymington.

Chris Lovely

From Gary Gove:

"...Chris Lovely died in the Indianapolis Hospital, on Monday, after a long fight with the Big C.

He was a dear friend, a great crew chief for me, and a class act, who is already missed..."

Chris crewed for Gary when he won the under 2 liter Can Am championship in 1980.  Also, when they converted an ex-Alan Jones Williams for Can Am racing.  This came to an end when Gary had a big crash at Wakins Glen. Later, they put the Williams back in original form and raced it in historics.  I believe Chris, son of Pete Lovely, crewed for various Indy teams.

Leading British rally driver David Stokes died from cancer on 10th February. David had a very successful career in the 1970s which included winning the British National Rally Championship in 1976. A big accident on the Gwynedd Rally in 1980 put him in hospital for some months and led to him retiring from the sport to continue running the family bakery business in South Gloucestershire.

In 2002 he was bitten by the bug again and took up historic rallying. He was very successful at this, winning four national historic rally championships, the last of these in 2014.

Italy's hillclimb racing legend Domenico Scola passed away on 24 Feb 2016, at the age of 85.

Born on 04 November 1930, he had his debut in 1948 and actually never quit racing!

Winner of the Italian Hillclimb Championship in 1972, he earned his last victory in 2001 at the Rieti-Terminillo hillclimb (his first and only win in the European Hillclimb Championship), then aged 71!!!

His two sons Carlo and Emilio were also hillclimb racers. His grandson by the same name of Domenico is among the favorites to win the Italian Hilcclimb Championship in 2016.

Sad news. David was, briefly, a TNFer, and contributed a few good stories in this thread:

My husband did not pass in a hospital ... or on a Monday.

With all due respect, while these may seem like small details, it is typical of the mis-information spread by Gary Gove, who has not had the compassion, decency or courtesy to contact me to express his condolences. Instead, he quickly shared second-hand and inaccurate information with seemingly everyone he knows. His rush to spread gossip --- in complete disregard for my husband's and my expressed wishes --- caused problems for Chris and me in recent years (such as hard feelings among family members), so while his kind words now about my husband, whom he had not seen in 20+ years, sound nice, they ring hollow over here.

And, yes, my husband worked for several CART, CCWS and IndyCar teams over the course of 30+ years --- teams that won numerous races and championships. He also worked in the ALMS series. He is Pete Lovely's only son, and worked for his dad's team in his youth. Chris is widely known and well-respected in current racing circles as a man of skill, dedication, kindness and integrity. He will be tremendously missed by many, but none more so than me.

If anyone has any questions or comments, please direct them to me. Gossip is disrespectful and often inaccurate.

Thank you.

South Australian Tom Stevens' funeral took place last Thursday. Tom was impressively close to 100 years, had his first experience of motor sport prewar when he drove his Morris Cowley Special to Victor Harbor for the 1936 South Australian Centenary Grand Prix. He spectated at all the prewar South Australian races, and treasured the memories of those events. Postwar he continued, was at Bathurst for the 1952 Australian Grand Prix, fettling Bill Craig's Cooper, then built astonishingly oil tight MGs Specials to race in South Australia. Tom was a BP fuel boffin, attended Donald Campbell's Bluebird Land Speed Record bid, as well as Andrew Mustard's supercharged Elfin Catalina test car for " Bluebird", and Garrie Cooper's venture to Warwick Farm with Arnold Glass to debut another Catalina in Sydney. Tom was a great enthusiast and supporter of Garrie Cooper's Elfins. In the 1970s Tom made a comeback to the driver's seat with another astonishingly oil tight MG , this time a TF Special, racing it as far afield as Lakeside in Queensland, and elsewhere. His last creation was a particularly attractive and beautifully proportioned MG TC Special for his good friend Dr Playfull aka Dr John Playford.
Talking Tom was a fascinating character who often regaled us with great stories of motor racing's Spartan and frugal days in Australia.

Thanks, Richard. Duly amended.

So "passed away last night" means "yesterday"?

That's how I would interpret that. If they'd said he died 'overnight' then there's room for query but last night seemed quite authoritative.

The Indy Star  has an obit for Eldon Palmer   age 87  who died June 30th. While he is best known for his business interests  in Indiana  many here might remember him  best as the pace car driver of that 1971 Dodge Challenger  that crashed into the photographer's stand at the start of the 1971 Indy 500.

Slightly OT were Chris Schienkel<sp> , Tony Hulman  , and John Glenn his passengers that day?

Yes, thanks for the images of Cordts, Vince.  And I, too, was a big fan of his, E1pix.   :)

I recall being behind the tower at Mosport in the mock grid area just prior to a race in what must have been the 1966 Canadian Championship season.  JC was sitting in the Billes' McLaren M1A right up at the gate, as I recall, and it must have been prior to the start engines command since there's no way I'd be doing a walkie through the assembled machinery once they fired up.  As I viewed his cockpit from off his right shoulder, I noticed that the car was fitted with two tachometers fitted more or less side by side.  After musing over this for a moment or two, I stupidly leaned over next to John and asked something along the lines of, 'John...  Why is the car fitted with two tachos?'  With a gesture to each gauge, he quite calmly and briefly explained that one was an electric unit and the other was mechanically driven.  The team wanted to test each for accuracy, I presume.  I thanked him for the explanation and wished him well in the race.  I haven't the foggiest recollection of the race itself.

I said above that I was stupid to approach John...or any other driver for that matter...at that point as most certainly he would be getting his game face on.  I'm older and wiser now and wouldn't dream of doing that again.

Tom Montague Meyer (1919 – 2016)
Obituary by the BRDC:

Tom Meyer CBE, one of the oldest Members of the British Racing Drivers’ Club, passed away peacefully on Sunday 26th June. He was 96 years of age and had been a Life Member since 1976, having originally been elected to Full Membership in 1950.
Tom Meyer raced some distinctive cars, beginning with the Alta-based Streamliner which he acquired from its constructor, John Heath, in time for the 1950 season. A third place at Castle Combe was followed by an entry in the Paris 12 Hours at Montlhery in which he finished seventh with Philip Fotheringham-Parker as co-driver. For the following year, Tom acquired one of the HW-Altas, as raced previously by a young Stirling Moss, and finished third at Gamston and second, to the Simca-Gordini T11 of Johnny Claes, in the Grand Prix des Frontieres at Chimay in Belgium.
The HW-Alta was attractively converted into a sports car to enable Tom to take part in both the Mille Miglia and the Goodwood Nine Hours in 1952 although the car retired on both occasions. A plan to share an Aston Martin DB2 in the 1953 Le Mans 24 Hours with Peter Clark failed to happen but Tom did contest the Spa 24 Hours a few weeks later in the Aston Martin DB3 Coupe which had been built originally for David Brown’s daughter Angela. Again Fotheringham-Parker was Tom’s co-driver but the car was forced to retire. Tom and the DB3 Coupe did enjoy better luck in the Pescara 12 Hours, on this occasion with the late Tony Gaze as co-driver; they finished sixth overall and third in the over 2-litre sports car class. Back with Fotheringham-Parker as co-driver, Tom finished 12th in the Goodwood Nine Hours.
In 1954, a second attempt at the Mille Miglia, this time with the DB3, almost ended in disaster when Tom crashed on a wet road near Ferrara, the whole incident being graphically recorded by Denis Jenkinson in his report for Motor Sport, Jenks being the passenger in George Abecassis’s HWM-Jaguar following directly behind. Rendered semi-conscious in the impact, Tom came round to find himself gazing into the eyes of the film actress Dawn Addams, who lived nearby. By the evening, Tom had sufficiently recovered to dine with Enzo Ferrari. After the Mille Miglia, Tom raced twice in Sweden, at Skarpnack and Karlskoga, where he finished fifth and fourth respectively.
Once described as ‘a dapper timber tycoon’, Tom had been on a flight back from a business trip to Iran when he met Fleur Cowles (nee Freidman), the legendary American expatriate writer, painter, philanthropist and socialite. In 1955 he became Fleur’s fourth husband with Cary Grant as best man. They divided their time between a large flat in the Albany, a Tudor farmhouse in Sussex and a castle in Spain. Fleur, who was some 11 years older than Tom, died in 2009 at the age of 101. In 1986 Tom was honoured as a CBE for his services as chairman of the National Chest and Heart Hospitals, London.

Although mentioned by Reinhard in his last post, I only just now realized that Craig "Cricket" Keel died July 5 of a "massive heart attack" - he was only 54! http://auburnpub.com...30cfca973b.html

Keel was one of the foremost racing drivers of New York state in the late 20th century. In Sprint car racing, he was the eternal underdog, always trying to achieve the impossible with his small but close-knit team, basically a mom'n'pop operation. To his credit, he refused to play the big fish in a small pond, and apart from a couple of Empire State Sprint titles (1994/'95), he roamed the US in pursuit of the Outlaws circuit, racing against the Kinsers, Swindells and Wolfgangs of the world. He did pretty well, too, finishing 10th in World of Outlaws points twice (1987 & '93). His best* results in about 250 WoO appearances between 1983 and '97 were three third place finishes, at such diverse places as Rolling Wheels Raceway in New York (Jun 7, 1988), a high-speed five eights track, and Kokomo Speedway in Indiana (Jul 17, 1991), a flat quarter mile. On August 10, 1993, he crowned his career with another third at Cayuga County Speedway in his hometown of Weedsport, New York. His best result in high-dollar events was 4th at the 1987 Eldora Nationals, and again 4th at the 1992 Kings Royal, beating lots of name drivers in the process both times. Sadly, though, he never qualified for the main event of Sprint car's Taj Mahal, the Knoxville Nationals, 14th in the B-main being his best result there (1992).

True to the "outlaw spirit", Keel competed in a variety of events all over the US. With the short-lived WoO rival United Sprint Association, he was 5th at K-C Raceway in Ohio (Jul 15, 1989), and second with the All-Star Circuit of Champions at Attica Raceway Park during the 1990 Ohio Speedweek. Competing on the tough Central Pennsylvania circuit, he was Rookie of the Year at Selinsgrove Speedway in 1983, and second at Williams Grove on Aug 12 in 1994, with more top finishes guesting in weekly shows at Tri-State Speedway in Indiana (2nd in 1990) or Knoxville Raceway in Iowa (3rd in 1987), for example. He was a regular competitor and winner with the United Racing Club from New York to North Carolina, and spent several months on the West coast with outstanding success: second in the 1985 Super Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway in Washington, and many top finishes with the competitive Northern Auto Racing Club in California, including two wins in 1986 (Jul 5 at Calistoga Speedway and Aug 15 at Placerville). He was also second with the USAC Sprint division at Butler Motor Speedway in Michigan, Aug 25 in 1990, and third at Comtrax Motor Speedway in Kentucky six weeks earlier.

Most of the time, he was held back by his equipment, never being able to afford the latest "stuff". Testament to his raw speed are the number of fast times in qualifying, with at least eight in full WoO fields, including two track records (Kings Speedway in California, Mar 8 in 1989, and Bloomington Speedway/Indiana five weeks later). Other tracks on which he outqualified the field include Lincoln Speedway in Pennsylvania, Knoxville Raceway, Tri-City Speedway in Illinois, Devil's Bowl and Big H in Texas, Skagit Speedway, and Baylands Raceway Park in California. With such a record, it's no wonder he had fans all through the United States who will miss his undying spirit.

RIP, Cricket.

* EDIT Subsequent research shows him finishing second at Santa Maria in 1987, superseding above information.

I've just read where Grahame Ward has passed away on the Gold Coast. He had a large influence on racing in Queensland, Australia, being a race commentator/reporter at Lakeside and Surfers Paradise Raceway where he worked as PR Manager. He was also co-founder of the long-running Gemini Touring Car one-make series. Here is his obituary (I wasn't aware of his connection with Jack Brabham).http://www.speedcafe...-grahame-ward/.

Thanks to excellent research by a fellow researcher, David Webb, sadly it is confimed Leon Walger, the former Aurora Formula 1 and Le Mans driver died 18th June 2016.

Text as follows:

Leónidas Horacio Walger q.e.p.d. - Su mujer Mónica, sus hijos Sonya, Tomás y Malenita y sus nietos participan con profunda tristeza su fallecimiento. Sus restos serán inhumados hoy, a las 9, en la Capilla Ardiente de Chacarita.

He was 72, being born 16th January 1944. Didn't realise until David made the link that he was father to actress Sonya Walger. A colourful character by all accounts.

RIP.

In these modern times it takes twelve days for the AUTOSPORT magazine to reach my postbox in Germany. So only today I learned from Marcus Pye’s article (Sept 1 issue, p. 65) that Mike White died some weeks ago.

The earliest mention I found on the WWW is this one from August, 22nd.

Obituary from PressReader.com:

South African Mike White, the 1978 BARC Formula Ford 2000 champion with Delta Race Cars, died this month, aged 62.
Widely considered to be the most talented driver to emerge from SA post-Jody Scheckter, the quiet achiever arrived in England penniless having won the 1977 Driver to Europe FF1600 title in a Merlyn Mk25.
A superb mechanic and test driver, Mike built Deltas for Nick Crossley, who loaned him a works chassis. The budget only stretched to one championship, but once he knew the circuits, six wins and three lap records presaged the crown.
Following an abortive F3 attempt he returned to top FF2000 podiums late in 1979, but reached F3 in '80-'81, winning races in Marches, which were no match for Ralt’s RT3. Mike then went home where he raced Toyotas and founded the Whitespeed tuning concern in Boksburg.

International Motor Racing Research Center Governing Council member Adrian Ketchum passed away on October 1. From the IMMRC link:

"Ade was a member of the Sports Car Club of America for more than 50 years. He held numerous positions in the Glen Region SCCA, including serving as Regional Executive three times, and was honored with multiple awards both by the region and nationally for his involvement.

Ade played an important role in leading Corning Enterprises to purchase, in partnership with the International Speedway Corp., the Watkins Glen race track in 1983."

I met Mr. Ketchum a few times through Michael Argetsinger and know he was a good friend of the racing and Watkins Glen community. RIP and best wishes to family and friends.

Josef Kretschi, Swiss driver that distinguished himself in hillclimbs and on the European Touring Car and the European 2-Litre Sportscar Championships, passed away two days ago in Portugal, where he lived with his wife for a long time.
