Hi, I'm a newbie here, but I wanted to point out that it's the anniversary of Colin McRae's death on the 15th of September. Back in 1991 I was his navigator for a national rally - an unforgettable day since it's not often that a journalist gets to do something as 'real' as that.

I've written about it on my website and thought it might be of interest to some of you. It's here: http://wp.me/p3rDad-hd

He was an amazing man, and I think it's right to keep his memory alive.

Many thanks,

Graham

Ah, poor Colin.  I was working in Scotland on the day of the crash and the news filtered out into our office in East Kilbride.  People were stunned and saddened even if they had no interest in rallying.  I had not realised how much of a national icon he was in Scotland.  He will not be soon forgotten, especially by anyone who ever saw him in action.

Thanks for the link, that was a great read. Colin was my childhood hero, and I'll never forget his magnificent driving.

I remember the initial news report on autosport.com about a helicopter registered to Colin McRae having crashed.  In my naivety I took it at complete face value and was extremely sad to read a couple of hours later that he was in fact piloting it.  I'd just assumed he was the owner but not onboard.

Never seen him rally in person, did see him competing in the Ascar race at Rockingham, supporting Champ Car and I was buzzing just to have walked past him in the tunnel under the track, as I was heading to the pits and he coming the other way deep in conversation with Jason Plato.  I don't really like bothering drivers for autographs and photos and I don't regret one moment not having stopped Colin (which would have been insulting to Plato, as I'd have ignored him!), it was enough for me just to see a legend engaged in a passionate discussion about an event he'd just taken part in.

Thanks for the article ...it was a great read! :)

I was a huge Colin McRae fan, and I was devastated when he died...I read about his accident on this site.  It was an awful time...I must have thought about it every single day for at least six months. It is still hard to believe sometimes that he is gone. Colin will certainly never be forgotten.

We have discussed C.McRae at length in the thread covering the fairly recent TV programmes (with Sir Chris Hoy selecting McRae as his hero for his programme). It was not entirely complimentary.

Would this thread be more appropriate for the main forum rather than the very narrow "Historical Research" section?

(I found the separation of "Historical Research" from the main forum irritating even before the appalling changes that have made this forum almost impossibly slow for many of us - it is yet another section to have to open to check for new threads/posts and there simply haven't been enough in my view to warrant it continuing as separate, especially in this dreadfull new slow format).

I too have never understood making this thread. TNF always was a far better place with all the historical stuff there.
Now that my internet has improved to walking pace I can use these forum ok. I still prefer the earlier version however.
