Title unashamedly stolen

Thimo Jansen @thimo
@EliGP “Raikkonen to Ferrari, brings Beer”

Ferrari signs Lotus' head of aerodynamics Dirk de Beer

Maybe they should just have bought the whole team?

This is like 2006 when everyone in the pitlane was poaching Renault's people.

Fantastic title  :rotfl:

Ferrari looking very strong indeed for the next year, as long as the engine is a match for the Mercedes machine.

Haha.  If I hadn't seen the Autosport report already, that title would have gotten me.

Whatever is going on with Ferrari's aero department, its certainly not bringing the expected results, so I welcome change.

Lotus looks like a sinking ship. Guess its shaping up for a 3 way Fez/Merc/RBR fight in 2014.

Dirk de Beer is an epic name!

I'm sorry for Lotus who are a cool team apart from their horrendous PR/marketing/Twitter department, but as far as I'm concerned I'm perfectly fine with Ferrari poaching as many talented guys from them as they can. The dream team nuclear warfare team-mate battle won't be as fun if they don't have an absolute top car.

I would also advise them to go get some WD-40 and duct tape to fix the damn wind tunnel once and for all, that's what I'm most worried about. That and the engine - if the engine's **** all these efforts will have been for nothing.

Ferrari have now secured the services of Enstone's star driver, its technical director and its chief aerodynamicist. Déjà vu all over again.

there was an interview published back in october 2011 (that i remembered reading after kimi joined the team) with Dirk de Beer on how to make it into formula 1, what is his role within the team and how he came into the sport.

here's a interesting portion of that interview.

Driven Enough for F1?? (James Cronshaw talks to Formula 1 engineer Dirk DeBeer about all things motorsport)

http://felixonline.c...-enough-for-f1/

How did you get into engineering and Formula 1?

I was always interested in motor racing – my father was keen on it and took me to Grand Prix. That’s how I got a love for Formula 1. I’ve always been interested in aerodynamics, so the two go together. I was always very keen - I did my homework and found out what the possibilities were and results said Imperial College. At that stage IC was very involved in Formula 1 aerodynamics, so I decided to go to Imperial and got involved with the motor racing society there, which was with Prof. John Harvey and Peter Beerman.

What was your career path?

Mine was rather tortuous and probably not a typical one. While I was at Imperial I was the research assistant for the Honda team’s tunnel and got a lot of contacts in Formula 1 and motor racing. I’m originally South African, I left South Africa because of the Apartheid. At the end of Apartheid I went back to South Africa, spent a while there and eventually decided I’d had enough there and wanted to get back into motor racing. I joined a team in America where I had some contacts. Swift Engineering – they did Indy racing.

Pat Fry isn't an aero man at all.

what is he exactly???? James allison came and became chasis director, Beers comes in and will work with bigoisis , Pat fry is left with the tile 'Director of Engineering' which seems more of a Co-ordination post rather than an Engineering one i.e he's moderating the harmony between departments.

but i could be wrong, ferrari has one of the most confusing organisational structures of the F1 grid along with Mclaren's Matrix system. (should Ferrari's be termed as 'Pasta system' as opposed to 'matrix system'     :smoking: )

Okay so there are still few people we have to bring in to Ferrari - Newey, Horner, Marko and maybe Vettel and we will be champions

Well hasn't Ferrari just ripped apart Lotus! They're a wonderful team but just can't get past these money woes! Ferrari have benefited big time IMO - the 3 they've signed are probably among the most vital cogs in that team.

Strange that nobody wants to invest in a team knocking on the door of the top teams with its limited resources! Couldn't they get some oil money or something?

Marko?!
Newey, Horner, Vettel... okay, the one is a good team boss, the 2nd a good designer, the third a good driver. If you get the three of them you get good assets and at the same time you take them away from your 'enemy', it's a win-win situation.
But Marko? What does anybody win getting him on-board. I say, let's get everybody from Red Bull bar Marko and Red Bull is done :p

you only need to give Alonso and Kimi their prefered setup (understeer and oversteer respectively :drunk: ) and make a car close to 5% of the RBR, that's all that's needed.

JAmes Allison and De Beer (along with others at LotusF1) made a car worthy of challenging the might of RB9 and W04  with half the budget, so it's not talent that Ferrari are lacking at the moment.

Also, it took Newey almost 4 years to iron out the gremlins of Red Bull cars and make it race winners, so Newey isn't the silver bullet for Ferrari. Stop being so negative and hope for the best in the near future.

Heh. I'm half impressed and disturbed at the same time. Having bucket loads of cash sure is helpful. Who else can/should Ferrari lure from Enstone?

to be honest, not always.

you see, sometimes the environment plays a big part. i'm of the understanding the unless you are somesort of director within a team, the payment is pretty similar in Formula 1 as a whole. but sometimes frustration comes as there is lack of freedom for excellence in teams with financial difficulties such as lotusF1 ATM. do u really think LotusF1 would pay any significant amount less to it's technical leaders compared to a team with buckets of cash???

but engineers also have to judge where they can shine, and which team is a sinking ship. one of the reasons for the departure for Allison was rumored to be the lack of financial guarantee he demanded for the development of 2014 car. the case with De Beer may be similar to that of James allison, or maybe he really missed Allison and kimi

the real question now is, who's next to jump ship from LotusF1???

Ferrari were ready to break the bank for Newey, and it didn't happen.

However it's not only cash the motivator. There's firstly the human need to change surroundings to keep driving inspiration, and where the Ferrari factory is placed, is undoubtedly a stunning place for any family.

Then there's also personal resume, and in Motorsport, McLaren and Ferrari always looks good on a CV.

It's not about money, and I don't think Ferrari are paying him any inflated salary.

The suspension guy.

Edit: or did he already move to Mercedes?

Ah I see. So Lotus' technical director, head of aero and star driver independently came to the same conclusion that right, Ferrari looks like the place to be: fun, challenging and cool red shirts.

I'm not suggesting that money is the sole reason that motivated them to jump ship, but it's not unreasonable to assume that they are getting better compensation.

If people wanted inspiration and motivation they could have just gone to Caterham - the personal satisfaction of dragging that car up the grid should be enormous.

Sure people move to different teams all the time, but 3 to the same team? Raised at least one of my eyebrows. But feel free to correct me with an example of similar personnel movement to a team not known to be well funded.

Poaching all of McLaren's staff didn't seem to work so I guess they're going after Lotus next.

Yea, Ferrari's organizational structure is definitely confusing.  Had a very helpful individual( ;) ) in the Ferrari thread clear up the aero team workings, so check that out if you want some idea.

But Pat Fry is largely a mechanical-focused engineering sort.  Started out working on suspension systems.

I would love a nice hierarchy chart, for sure. :)

So the BBC article on De Beer says Lotus has lost their Head of CFD as well. What's his/her name and to which team?

BTW, AMuS reports Nicolas Hennel is going Lotus, from Ferrari.

So basically Hennel and De Beer are trading places.

ok , found it, it's a PDF brochure issued by LotusF1 called ''LotusF1 team and enviroment,'' and it's an intriguing reading with a tour of lotusF1 facilities, CFD infrastructures, 2014 regs etc.

here's the PDF link

anyway, the person is (according to it)

Jarrod Murphy, Head of CFD at Lotus F1 Team

And with the 70000 million people Ferrari had, why did they need more?

They say an oppurtunity, they took it
