It's again a pleasure to see Mr Wong's photography. Marvelous stuff. Thank you for posting.

 

There's a lot more charm in racing on the airfield racetrack than is visible to non-participants. From some vantage points practically every bit of the contests can be seen, and there is always a great conglomeration of exhibits, invited, intended, and accidental, on the premises. I wonder if they still offer free guided tours of the paddock. All manner of arcane knowledge revealed!

Frank as you have stated most racing began on airport type courses. I remember what a great event Santa Barbara was, also Palm Springs. I lived in Palm Springs in my youth and loved going to the airport to watch the cars run.

Nice post, Jerry.  A few years ago, I was fortunate to participate in a Driver's Ed on this course on the Thursday before the race weekend.  Unfortunately a few too many of my fellow drivers found the K rails.  Too much carnage and the event hasn't been repeated since.  Here's a few pics from this year's event:
