Hewland's website does not list any information for an "LR" model.

Post photos of the gearbox and people can probably tell you what it is.

It kinda looks like a modified LG 500 rear gear cluster case and shifter mechanism cap attached to a different CWP case?  But 2 speed or 4 speed? What was its reason to be? It is obviously for indycars, but was it used for anything else?

I don't remember it. Do you have one or have you seen one in person? What Indy car was it used in, if any?

Vaporware maybe. Or perhaps nobody bothered to purchase one, being perfectly satisfied with their LG500s. Old catalogs hold many wonders. You might try contacting Haas or better yet, Hewland. They might be able to tell you all about it, or they might be as amazed as anyone.

I'm not sure but it may have been a Canam box as used by McLaren. Thye used a LG500 in Canam but the oddity was they had the Indy starter dog drive fitted too. This was used at Indy to " gentlemen start your engnes" . The McL CamAm cars had on board starters but the front of the engine was hard to reach so McL, being practical NZ types, use the Indy dog drive to turn over the engine for timing set up at tracks.

Yes it is true that the LG500 had an external starter variant for use at indy.  Most indy applications appear to use the standard LG500 cwp case with LG500 gear cluster case having 2 or 4 speeds depending on the time. There was also a 2 speed variant of the LG500 with a different and smaller gear cluster case and rear cover plate.

The unusual part remains to be the non LG500 right side loading cwp case? Was it unique or taken from another Hewland design?

Haas Imports has no info.
