Legendary mechanic George Bignotti died on Friday in Las Vegas at age 95.
Bignotti shepherded drivers to seven Indianapolis 500 victories, more than any chief mechanic in the history of the race; drivers including A.J. Foyt, Graham Hill, Al Unser, Gordon Johncock and Tom Sneva.

On the Indianapolis Motor Speedway site. I like the photo of him in the cockpit of Foyt's car with helmet on. I was able to converse with Mr. Bignotti on a few brief occasions and he would be friendly and gracious. A true legend of the sport.

In the era before telemetry he had the chassis all figured out. I recall seeing a video interview where he explained how he corrected/improved the suspension of the customer Gurney Eagle in 73 for Johncock.
"It didn't look right", he said.
When Chapman showed up with his rear engined cars, it did not take guys like Bignotti long to adapt!

Yeah, that was his favourite story! He told the same one about Foyt's 1960 Meskowski dirt car, only you could never see any difference!
