It possibly would have been third but Matt Grist is decent driver and cars prepared by his father for him are quick and always have a great historical history.
The race changed on the missed chicane . Probably trying to be historically correct and use on the original track layout.
The Irish ERA went on blink at end of race.

Re the comparative lap times of the Alfas, Matt is a quicker driver than Tony Smith these days and I would be pretty sure that the Grist Alfa is, overall, a quicker car. Tony's ex-Shuttleworth Tipo B is immaculately presented and I don't think that he is as hungry for wins as he might have been at one time.
It was certainly as good a ten-lap encounter as you are likely to see. Such a shame that Paddins couldn't pull it off, having failed by ¾ second in 2012 to beat Julian Bronson after another fabulous ten laps, he missed by only a ¼ second this time.

Agreed Alan. How/where did Grist get past Dowling? I was taking pics at the hairpin, where they handily don't have either (a) commentary or (b) a TV screen so was operating in something of a bubble!
Dowling's pole lap must have been quite something too, he was the only driver to beat the two minute barrier. From memory (always dangerous these days!), even Julian Bronson missed out on beating that mark two years ago, so it shows he was going pretty well.

Quite correct, Michael. Paddins' practice time was the first sub-2 minute lap for pre-war cars, and the Alfa was the only one to break 2 minutes in the race. I didn't see it, but I understand that Grist took the lead for the final time when he short-cut the chicane.

Having watched the race on Motors TV the Alfa did get past by cutting the chicane (he seemed to try to outbrake the ERA and left it too late). However he seemed to slow to let the ERA back past going up the hill (I assume to avoid a penalty) and then re-passed the ERA later that lap in the tunnel

For those who haven't had access to MotorsTV, there are highlights scheduled tonight at 8pm on ITV4

I enjoyed that, particularly the F3 race. Thanks Alan.
Not entirely sure about some of the commentary though. Why don't they just leave it to Marcus Pye?

Good point Mark, the other 2 know their stuff, but MAWP's in a different league! Especially when it comes to 70s/80s F3s

Marcus, John Hindhaugh (of Radio Le Mans fame) & Bruce Jones were commentating from Northamptonshire.

Compare the lap time of C this year with Martin Morris effort and he was a decent driver.
It's called development but what it has to do with Historic Racing defeats me
This video gives some idea of the power the C Type was churning out:

Would have thought being as quick and steady/solid as that one it would be an impossible thing to happen.?

It was being crewed, for some bizarre reason, by a Belgian singer called Milow, while Bernard Kuhnt, European regional Director for Jaguar Land Rover, was at the wheel at the time of the accident. Not sure what sort of high-speed pedigree either of them have

Probably more than people are admitting!
Can't see it entering into the protection of historic cars debate.

I wonder what they called Herr Kuhnt after the accident. Possibly what Max called Ron!!!!
