Yeah, really important, a famous person writes his/her name on a paper for you..

Important, no. But then again, where did I mention a famous person scribbling their name on a piece of paper as important? There's far more important events in life that go on. But behind an autograph is something sentimental to the owner. (Unless it's those types who get famous people to sign loads of things, then sell 'em)

When I was very young I went to a Blues game and tried to get an autograph from Kevin Francis. Was stuck behind some adults, so I didn't think he saw me. He was started to walk off, noticed me and then apologised for nearly missing me out and signed the programme. He didn't have to do that, but he made sure a young lad wasn't disappointed before the game started. His signature is worthless anyway, as he's working in Canada as a policeman now I think.  :p  .  Autographs like that are more of a memento, than something worth anything. They're priceless, like I said.

The light from your lower height probably hadn't reached his eyes...

I can't wait for Felipe Nasr to break the news that Massa ignored him in 2008 or so.

Probably the other way around.  "PLEEEEEASE ask me for an autograph..."

Nah it's definitely not DC, as I think Hamilton has specifically marked him out as someone who gave him some genuine attention around the same sort of time. Isn't this anecdote in his book? Long time since I read it but I think it was Irvine

OK I had to go and look it it up.  It was both, in a way.  Irvine looked at him holding his book out for a signature and 'just walked on'.

Also at Spa Lewis was standing outside the McLaren garage when DC came out and walked straight past him, but when Lewis called out to him DC replied "Alright Lewis?", remembering him, so it was good.

Hence my vague memory of it being DC, but Lewis means Irv clearly.

LOL, it could be anyone of the listed drivers. Anyone. The context here is that LH got some extra motivation, and most possibly it does not reflect on the personality of the driver who ignored him. Any of those drivers could have a fxxxxd up day/race/hour/minute when they would have ignored their own crying mommy for an autograph. So yes, it could have been Senna too, the guy was moody and hysteric like a bad mother in law if things were not going his way.

This thread is meant for fun nothing more

Slag Senna again, and you are for it mister    ;)

Looks like we have a winner then, sad as it is I would not mind having an orange juice with Irvine, I bet at the least he is not boring to be around.

IMO it was Herbert.

I think I remember some comment from Hamilton to Herbert at one converastion between them ( at TV ) where Hamilton mentioned something like this. But I'm not 100% sure

BTW I always sense a little tension between them in inteviews etc. It's not there with Brundle, DC or Hill

This coming from Hamilton? I'm sure that he spends hours and hours hanging around after the race to sign autographs for up and comers...  :rotfl:

who cares?

If you care about who the driver was, then you are far too into Lewis Hamilton and should take step back. Honestly - theres more to life than obsessing over another individual.

I got most of the drivers autographs at Melbourne 96, including Rosset! And no one walked past without giving me one, including some of the names people have listed here.

I was gonna show up with the smartass remark of "Luca Badoer", but then I didn't do my fact checking correctly and it turns out Forti wasn't on the grid anymore by Spa. Bugger.

It's clearly Giovanni Lavaggi... Lewis wanted him to sign it 'Johnny Carwash' and he got all uppity and ignored him...

When I read this my first thought was that it was Damon Hill. I don't know where I heard it from but supposedly Hill does not sign many autographs?

Anyway, it doesn't really matter to me as I have always thought that autographs are a bit silly.

Hill's PR at the time, Ann Bradshaw once said in the pages of F1 Racing magazine that she used to get cross at Damon for actually signing everything for everyone. She felt it devalued his signature.

Ahh that's where I remember it from...thanks Imperial! I knew I had read something about Damon Hill and autographs.

He 'only' sent me a printed card when my mum sent a drawing the 7 year old me did to him in 1997. Obviously his mailbag was pretty heaving, as it took a year to receive a reply, by which time he was now at Jordan (my drawing was of him in his Arrows at Hungary). The letter also contained a printed signature, but I'm not bothered... my letter reached at least his office and was replied to, and I was the happiest kid in the world when I received it. Framed, it took pride of place next to my cap and diecast helmet :)

What I've learned so far.  Some people care.. some people don't (and enjoy saying so).

And I still don't know who the driver was.

No idea, personally, can't even guess.

A driver ignored me once, too. Came right on into my lane without so much as a turn signal, the #%@-hole.

I would have Di Resta down as a miserable sod. I can see what your friend means about Sutil.

There is a happy medium though, I would not think less of a driver for not stopping for a cup of tea and a half hour chat with a fan, but I think at least saying, "sorry I am in a rush, thanks for supporting me" is not too much to ask.

I got a chance to have a chat with Di Resta at the Autosport show back in January and he was great.  Very friendly and chatty, and he came across as much nicer that he appears on the telly. But Alan McNish was even nicer.

A guy I used to work with had gone to school with Eddie Irvine and he gave EH's dad a birthday card for his young son, hoping that maybe EH would get a driver's autograph or two, but not really expecting anything back.  Well, it came back signed with birthday wishes from nearly every driver on the grid that year.  The wee lad was chuffed to bits and it became his most treasured possession.

But I do agree with you that Di Resta comes across and miserable and grumpy when he's being interviewed.  Mind you, the way he's been racing lately.......

What is this story?

Little kid, maybe 8 years old had a Damon Hill cap and a 1996 Rothmans t shirt with Damon driving his Williams printed on the front and the dad was asking Damon to sign it for his son and when Damon said no the kid started crying and then Damon stood back and said "If you don't have your programs open, I will not sign them" then I yelled "SIGN THE ROTHMANS SHIRT FOR THE KID DAMON!" but he just ignored, signed a few programs then walked away with the kid still crying, I mean for crying out loud, the kid was ON the fence right in front of him, not like he was at the back, was dressed to the 9's in his Damon Hill gear to meet his hero and he said no for absolutely no reason at all, I could not believe it, then I remember a long time ago someone on this very forum who was a mad Mansell fan told something similar and finished with "Never meet your heroes"

So true.

Interesting enough most of the ex drivers are way more arrogant, than  most of the current F1 drivers. Hill is ome of them. Lauda isn't really nice, too, Berger, Surer, M. Schumacher all don't even have a look for you when you greet them. Häkkinen is nice & friendly
