What about the only driver who sat on the grid and said to himself "If he leads me into the first bend, then I will drive into him"?

Ayrton Senna, Suzuka, 1990 (as he admitted later)

Or the only driver to be disqualified from a whole season?

Michael Schumacher, 1997

Or have I misunderstood the question?

In the Nostalgia forum where we who on occasion peek in are constantly reminded of the trolls and fanboys in the Paddock and Racing forum really have to have Senna / Prost discussion in a thread dedicated to the worst F1 drivers?

I see a raised finger in many threads here "already covered in xyz thread, use search"

Behave as you want visitors here to behave, or lose the we are better than the other forums attitude, you can not have it both ways.

Seeing that I introduced the Senna/Prost issue, can I remind everyone of the difference that sets Suzuka 1990 apart from other on-track coming togethers - namely that it was premeditated as Senna later admitted. I thought this is commonly accepted.

I tend to think that adding "Nino" Farina to Ayrton Senna da Silva and Michael Schumacher as worthy candidates, along with Alain Prost for good measure of course, would satisfy the requirements as being a legitimate definition for possible nomination as the "worst" F1 driver ever in each case. After snarling and snapping at me in the paddock at Spa in Very Ancient Times, Farina was therefore forever on my **** list and I never thought much of either of the Katzenslammer Kids and Prost blotted his copybook a few too many times for me....

Or, have I filed to misunderstand the pointlessness of this thread?

What exactly did you file?

As others have said, it's difficult to be too rough on anyone getting all the way up to F1. My least-favorite tend to be those who strictly buy their way in, but even then I can't think of anyone whose poor performances were strictly on their shoulders. This does not imply none existed, perhaps my memories are strongest for the drivers with character or success.

That said, a worthy topic indeed.

[I] am by no means an F1 fan.

But to even suggest it is not the pinnacle of motorsport is slightly odd, when it clearly is in terms of teams, money, driver talent, tv figures, attendances.

To even suggest otherwise is actually quite offensive to those that are simply stating the obvious and suggests an overwhelming bias towards other series. Fair enough, but please, c'mon, you can't argue with fact.

I missed this one and nearly spat my coffee when reading it. The key (and really quite important) word you missed out was racing. Hence, nowhere near a pinnacle. There are other spurious superlatives claimed by F1/F1 fans, but let's leave it there.

IMHO of course. And yes I have attended a good number of bl00dy F1 races, so I can talk with some authority, even if I am talking to myself (which I often am).

I'd suggest the best, pure racing is the top levels of karting, but don't wish any coffee lost over it.
