Watch out for this tomorrow.  Charles Pic starts at the back and will have to serve a drive through penalty within 5 laps of the start.

Session Qualifying

Fact Left the Pit Lane when the red light was displayed at the Pit Exit.

Offence Breach of Article 31.3 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations.

Decision A drive-through penalty in accordance with Article 16.3(a) to
be served during the first 5 laps of the race.

Reason Car 20 crossed the pit exit line at 14:17:10. The red light was
at 14:17:05.

It is noted this is the second consecutive event in which the driver has
driven through a red light.

I think that driving through a red light on a race course mandated something stronger than a drive through. Pretty sure that back 100 years ago when I was karting it was immediate DSQ for the weekend. Guess there is some sort of logic to not doing more than a driver through, but really is a NO for any racer in any series. Doing it 2 races in a row, should raise additional questions from the stewards towards Pic and his on track behaviour.

I think in both cases, it was not malicious or causing any immediate danger, just suggested a lack of care and attention.

 

It does seem to be an odd penalty, probably worse than a grid penalty (is that the intention?) as you end up 30 seconds down, rather than just a few seconds back which you are with a grid penalty.

It was close to beaten into my head when studying for my first Karting license that you absolutely, positively HAD to know what all flags meant, and follow and obey any flag regardless of agreeing or not. Having a case of "....lack of care and attention..." at the level of F1 is non excusable, and the more I think about this being twice in 2 weeks, the more I think he should have been sat for the duration of the weekend.

Stupid from Pic, especially at Suzuka. What he should have done is try and kill a fellow competitor at the start of the race. Then he wouldn't get any penalty and be remembered as a flawless hero.

Maybe Hamilton was after TV time as well when some years back in Canada he ran a red light after a pit stop and took himself and Kimi out of the race?

Mistake will happen, doesn't matter who it is, because of human factor.

If I remember rightly the penalty for running the red light at pit exit during the race used to be disqualification. I do think it is absolutely ridiculous to have cars entering the track when there‘s a red flag. It‘s compounded by the fact he is a repeat offender.

Well done to the stewards, though, for thinking about the actual impact of the sanction before arriving at a decision. Whilst on the face of it a drive through seems lenient, when you take into account Pic‘s qualifying position, it is a harsher penalty than if he had been excluded from qualifying but still allowed to start from the back. Short of kicking him out of the event or making it a stop-go, they couldn‘t have dealt with this any more strongly. Hopefully next time Pic trundles along the pit lane, he will do so with his eyes open and his brain engaged.
