I guess the only difference is that even thought they had the best cars, Ascari and Schumacher were the best drivers on the grid in those years.

According to almost all of the pundits, there's no difference this year ;)

No love for Fangio? He was considered the best.

True, but he was also absent in whole '52 and half of '53 - incidentally the same era thet Ascari got his record.

One more to go and Ascari's record with an asterisk will be caught. Will he do it? Vettel versus weather and/or gearbox/alternator one more time. Or any other possible problem that can throw up at Interlagos. We had Vettel vs weather/collision last year in Brazil, Vettel vs gearbox in 2011, Vettel vs weather in qualifying in 2009.

I think he will win in India, Abu Dhabi, and USA, but not Brazil.

So far I am correct!

Let's see how Brazil goes. I predicted that Webber will beat Vettel around there.

Fangio competed throughout all of the 1953 season, Ascari beat him on trot that year.

Many people think RBR will gift the final win to Webber if circumstances favour it (meaning RBR dominates a dry straightforward race with a 1-2 much like back in both 2010 and 2011), but how likely is it really to happen?

I doubt, that Mark would want a gifted win.

He wanted in Malaysia   ;)

But I'm pretty sure he doesn't want it so openly gifted. And I doubt Seb would move over if he's already miles ahead.

Aaaaaaand it's done!

Now let's wait till Melbourne 2014 and see if Red Bull gets off to a great start with new regs, enabling Seb to extend his record.:D

Yes!! This is so exciting, I wonder how long he can extend this streak!! This really is sport at its finest!!

It's going to be a real challenge with his new teammate though, glad they didn't bring in one of those also-rans who were after the seat and went with a bona fide superstar to challenge Vettel!!

Well done. When people say 'RB at it again Vettel would just win for the rest of the season' or the likes, I always take it as no more but a figure of speech. For so many consecutive wins it takes a flawless teamwork, a great car, and ultimately a great driver. Second half clean-sweep, congrats

No. Because one win will be gifted to Webber for sure.

I really thought Vettel would radio in "Multi 21" and slow down. He should have since he really owed Webber one. The history books seem to be more important to him than the present.

It would have showed some class and a real understanding of the word team. However, he would rather add to his stats and utter some hollow platitudes over the radio about how it is all down to the team.

The team weren't so important in Malaysia when he ignored them and did what he wanted to. True colours that day.

Yeah, Mark would be so happy if his teammate led him 5+ seconds every lap but the slowed down to give him a win. I think he would find that more insulting and upsetting than Malaysia.

Talk about dynastic succession.

Medieval age: The king is dead. Long live the king.

Modern formula 1: The Schumacher is retired. Long live the Vettel.

Lol had Seb gifted the win to Mark the same people would slam him for how pathetic a gesture it was now that the championship was long over.

Giving back something you stole is not a pathetic gesture.

Schumacher gifted Barrichello some wins in late 2002, but it doesn't change the overall view that Rubens was only a #2 in the team and was let to win only if it was "comfortable for Schumi". Does anyone talk nowadays, how grateful Schumi was to gift Barrichello wins? Not really, instead people talk that Rubens was Michael's b*tch.

He didn't steal anything from Webber. he ignored team order. On track he got the win fair and square but that's beside the point. Point is Seb can't do anything right in some peoples minds so don't even try to pretend.

A few races ago, I thought he would too, but it seems Mark didn't want it himself. Now that I think about it, it was a good thing that Vettel didn't. It would have looked really cheap and everyone would have been discussing it instead of discussing Mark's retirement, as he deserved. It was quite obvious today that their relationship is considerably warmer now.

So there is still no one that can explain why Vettel owed Webber while acknowledging the fact that what Vettel did in Malaysia, was what Webber has been promoting and (trying to be) doing for almost 2 years?

It was class act to give Webber the spotlight for the podium interviews. That's the place for nice goodbye gestures.

Vettel already "gave" one win to Mark in Brazil 2011. No need to do it again, Mark wouldn't like it anyway, he wanted to win not to be gifted a win.

Vettel's words about the record:

I don’t know if this translates well, but, we are, it’s a German saying, we are baking very very small bread rolls in comparison to the guys of the past.

“I think in terms of a certain record with Alberto Ascari you can’t really compare it, it’s at a completely different time,” said Vettel after the race.

“If you consider the fact that in the fifties the races were much longer and there were a lot of things that were breaking down, much more than nowadays where it’s very professional, reliability is exceptionally good for everybody. I think his record still stands out a lot.

“So at the end of the day, as I see it now, it’s just a number but hopefully one day, when I’ve got less hair and chubby then it’s probably something nice to look back to.”

They weren't so important in Silverstone 2011 either. True colors when it was bragged about in the press conference afterwards.

Vettel's words about the record:

a masterclass to Alonso, that's how you handle breaking records, especially considering if they're not worthless.
