Damn! :(

The man killed in a fiery car crash at the Queensland Raceway at Willowbank on Tuesday was 26-year-old British racing driver Sean Edwards, who was visiting Brisbane.

Edwards is believed to have been sitting in the passenger seat of the vehicle when it crashed into a wall and burst into flames on Tuesday morning.

Apparently he was in passenger seat during a driver coaching session. The 20yr old driver is critical.

Oh God.

One of my favourite drivers, real talent and such amazing love for the sport racing in every series he could.

What horrible news.

I can't believe it.  I don't really watch the Porsche Supercup, but catch the highlight quite a few times commentated on by Ben Edwards.  Sean seemed to be so talented and doing so well.  It's a real shame to log into Autosport and read such news.

Very sad :( I had seen a few Porsche races this year as support races to the F1, and his name was one of the few I picked up. Watching a pack of those Porsches come screaming down the straight at the Hungaroring in to the tight first corner was truly incredible!

Hopefully his lead is enough to become champion posthumously.

RIP :(. I've not seen him race at all, but sounds like he was a very talented young driver lost to the sport far too soon.

Hopefully this spurs the track into taking some safety measures, as it's the second death there in recent times.

Sadly it's only 18 points with a maximum of 40 available from the last race weekend. :(

Such tragic news. RIP.

I don't really want to speak about it but there is a possibility that his competitors pull out of the remaining races and allow Sean to have a posthumous championship. Would be a nice touch, and has been done before.

Will other drivers not award him the championship anyway?  I don't know what a normal attitude in this situation is, but I can't imagine the other drivers taking any enjoyment out of edging him to the prize

RIP..

I had never heard of Sean Edwards, but whenever a racing driver is gravely injured or killed in what I consider to be 'my' sport, I'm sadened.

Requescat in pace.

Oh no!  :(  He was having an amazing year, fantastic driver. My condolences to those who knew him and enjoyed watching him race. A sad day and week. These dark moments always seem to happen in multiples in Motorsport

Never had the pleasure of meeting or even speaking to Sean but I had an amazing battle with him at the Turkish round of the Formula Sim Racing Championships in 2009, one of my favourite online racing memories given his talents as a real racer.

We can never make this sport fully safe but at the same time we can't make it safe enough.

Awful news, especially with him on the verge of a title.

I worry that motorsport is becoming complacent about safety. Perhaps its just me, but there just seems to be more news like this than there were a few years ago.

Thoughts are with his family and I hope the 20 year-old driving the car pulls through.

Thanks for posting that - immense skill. A massive loss :(

All the amazing tracks he's raced on and in far worse conditions and he's killed giving some driver training at shitty Queensland Raceway. RIP

How did he hit a wall at Willowbank unless it was the front straight or final corner?

It was Turn 6 - the last corner before heading onto the front straight. Looks like the car just went straight on at almost unabated speed...  :(

The extent of the damage is quite shocking, I am trying to think of how the driver could have lost control so badly? Could it be brake failure maybe? For the car to be cut in half like that it must have been a hell of an impact.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was a brake failure of some kind. The car wasn't cut in half though, just the front has been pushed back so far that it looks like it has gone :( In that way it reminds me of Mike Burgmann's fatal accident at Bathurst in 1986...

How the Hell could you go into that wall fast enough to do that damage?

Must have been a jammed throttle from before the braking point. Looks like no brakes were ever applied.

Its actually a very small run off area considering the speed it is approached at.

I have been watching Porsche Cup highlights on Sky - Sean was doing a great job.

Awful accident. RIP. And best wishes to the injured driver for a speedy recovery.

He was going places in sportscar racing.

Others have mentioned the Porsche Supercup title, which Sean was favourite to win. I wouldn't hold it against Sean's rivals if they continued to fight for the title. If Sean had broken his leg and had to miss the last two rounds the other drivers would have still fought for the title and nobody would have criticised them for it, even though the loss of the title in those circumstances would have really hurt Sean. I'm generally of the view that most racing drivers would prefer to be honoured, in the event of their death, by the continuation of racing, albeit with a heavy heart. I'm not really a big fan of abandoning race meetings, pulling out of events etc as a way of honouring those killed in action. But I'm sure all those involved will do what they think is right and I won't criticise them regardless of what they decide to do.

A few of the tweets from Drivers:

MarkWay way too early... What a talent.. Always enjoyed watching him drive at the F1 weekends.

Nico: sad period in the racing world due to the loss of maria de vilota and sean edwards whom i went to school with #JaramaMaríadeVillota

DC: shocking news about Sean Edwards passing, top man and super talented racer, condolences to his nearest and dearest.

Sergio: Sad to hear the news from sean edwars. My thoughts with his Family,as always this sport gives a lot but at the same time can take everything

Martin: Terribly sad news re the death of Sean Edwards, a very talented racer. Condolences to his family and friends. Motor sport can be too cruel

Crofty: Morning run done felt great, but then switched on laptop & saw the awful news about Sean Edwards. A fabulous life & career cut way too short

  To the clips being posted of Sean's talents, best way to remember him when he was in his element and realising himself to his fullest. Driving that PSC 911 in the wet at the Nordschliefe is amazing

My contribution is a little different. As I mentioned here: http://forums.autosp...g-championship/ we raced each other in the FSR World Championships which at the time was the pinnacle of F1 based sim racing championships.  Sean was driving a 2006 McLaren and I was driving a 2006 Renault in low downforce trim. Unfortunately the sound has been removed from the video:

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=dMilNmgPLMY

At 25:45 I make my first overtake and Sean takes the place back in a Schumacher-esque fashion but luckily we can continue undamaged.

At 27.30 (next lap) I make a the move stick after making sure to pin Sean to the inside like Webber did to Vettel before they crashed a couple years later.

Sean went on to have another massive battle with Lee 'Maldojean' Morris: http://www.youtube.c...h?v=6E2fnV4-PDI

I'm sure he enjoyed his real racing career much more but still, great memories of fantastic virtual wheel to wheel racing from a great driver

well, if you look at all of them individually I don't think you can find something very wrong "motorsport" did. This one was not even in a competition
