Laureus seems to be going after something different, more like the winning team providing the best feel-good story of the year. Hence Brawn GP's award, when neither before nor after the 2009 season have they looked like a best-of-the-best outfit. They also seem to award a lot of one-off teams, i.e. Olympic or international cup teams, that by definition aren't really a continuing sort of enterprise.

And I hope RBR and Seb are nominated this year too...  :)

What you doing here then?

At least motorsport fans aren't prone to racially abusing drivers, or riot when their favourite team loses, or whatever. But I guess that is a discussion to be had elsewhere.

Please stop digging your hole, you're just coming off as a bit of a lofty ignorant ****

This is comparing RBR to all sports teams, and football is the biggest sport in the world, so put 2 and 2 together and what do you get?

Bayern Munich at the moment are certainly outrageously good and the best football team in the world. I would much rather watch BVB or Barcelona, but then I'd rather watch other F1 cars than Red Bulls win races :| I shan't comment on American sports as I know sweet FA about them.

I think Vettel meant he thinks Red Bull is the best team in the world among Formula 1 teams (Ferrari, etc)

I bet millions of people around the world dont even know what "Infinity Red Bull Racing" means. However they do know what country won the last soccer world cup championship. And also know what a Ferrari is.

The only team known by most people is Ferrari

Unfortunately the scandals over things such as illegal exhaust-blowing, illegal engine mapping, driver favouritism/team orders, and now possibly traction control, leave a dark cloud hanging over Red Bull and taint whatever they may have achieved.

You mean like in every other top team in F1?

Audi the best team? What a joke. Dominating is easy when you are far and away the best funded team in a class with at most one rival for the past decade. RBR are at the top of the most competitive motorsport series in the world, and they have built it from a very low base in less than a decade. Yes, they are well funded, but so are several other teams.

Best sporting team in the world? I doubt they would win any polls outside of the motorsport world. People identify people with teams, F1 has too much machinery - there are plenty of people out there who barely see it as a sport, let alone a team one.

Of course it is, and probably by some margin.

Association Football, that is, not the American version of rugby.

Football is by far the biggest sport in the world in every respect. Anybody who claims otherwise is seriously deluded. It is played in every country in the world. Every Saturday there are probably a couple of million or more people who play in a football match.

I don't think so of all sports. Look at Ryan Villopoto and Monster Energy Kawasaki. Similar to redbull except they dominate and the majority love them. Hands down by far best F1 team for the last 5 years, they have set the trend since 2009 and the others just try to replicate the performance.

Anybody know Watchmojo? They make top 10 of all sorts of things. One should make a request to them about this and expand it to: Best sport team in the world in any given period.

For example: Ferrari 2000-2004, Spain football team 2008-2012, Real Madrid football team 1956-1960. And there are probably many other good examples from other sports as well

You can't put any football team in the same league as Red Bull.  RBR are doing it on the global stage.  Unless Bayern win three World Club Championships on the trot, they cannot be considered.

The competition is much smaller in F1. It's only 10 other teams, with some who don't ever have a chance to win, while football teams have to beat about 20 other teams in their league and at different other leagues (Champions League)some more. Altough the technical agvantage some teams have at F1 over the others makes it a lot easier, too.

In football the last in the league can beat the 1st  on it's day, but Caterham will never beat RedBull in a race

It also makes it more difficult to get up there in the first place...plus over a season there is no chance that e.g. Cardiff will finish above Manchester United.

This is laughable.

Let's take Manchester United as an example. Some estimates of the UK pyramid of football teams put the number at around 7000 clubs, but to make things fair I'll just go for around 6 divisions below Prem League.

So for Manchester United to win the league, they first have to be IN the league. So if they win the league they are naturally ahead of 100 teams.

To then win the Europeon Championship they have to beat all the best in Europe which include 54 member associations. Now if apply the same loose logic that these countries all have 100 or so teams. That's 540 teams NOT includuing sub-divisions which probably runs into the tens of thousands.

So to win the champions league Manchester need to beat 540 teams (insanely low estimate)

Compare to F1 where you need to beat 9 other teams... puts this thread's question into light. i.e it's silly.

Good morning/afternoon/evening F1 fans?So I know we all hate Sebastian Vettel's radio message at the end of the races, but in Suzuka he said something that made me think he may have a point.'You are the best team in the world'.
Now,think about it for a moment. Is there a team operating at the level Red bull is?I tend to think I am an ardent follower of almost all popular sports and for me no team is even close to them in terms of operative excellence, organization, work ethic and long story short, there is almost an invincibility around them that is not there in any other sport in the world. If their is any criticism they have it is their PR department,it doesn't look like they are the most team but I guess this is a knock on effect of their dominance.
So what do you guys think? Are they number one in the world and if not,I would love to hear of any team that is coming close to their level.Looking forward to hearing from you.

What an utterly stupid thing to say..

Shows the true intent of the thread.

Not the same. A small soccer team beating a big team is a big deal and humiliation.

You will hardly see Carteham fans bragging their team finished 18th ahead of a DNFd Red Bull

But as soon as Loeb left full-time entry in WRC, they were easily dethroned by VW. The best racing teams are successful no matter who you put in the car.

Not to take anything away from ASTJ, but having only 8 races a year as opposed to the 20ish RBR do, makes it a lot easier to have your **** together.
The levels of pressure their entire organizations work under is dramatically different.

No. Hendrick is better. The NE Patriots are better. The Saint Louis Cardinals are better. The LA Lakers are better. Alabama is better.

RBR isn't in the same area code. Yet.

Have to be Boston Celtics and Bill Russell - 11 championship in 13 years.  :)

Are we talking about at the moment, or of all time?

I assume at the moment.

And I'd say no. They do seem to make a lot of blunders (not all on track) but have been fortunate the way they have played out.

in some ways, but the races are way longer, and for about half of the audi period its been about flat out racing (probably more), and until a few years ago the expectation was a audi could hit pretty much  anything, win that battle, limp back to pits and be repaired in record time.

but both audi and rbr execute really really well. but audi have more strength in depth

True, but think about how consistently strong the lakers have been. I hate pretty much all the teams I listed, but they all have the common factor of being GREAT over long periods of time. Rbr has only been worth a damn the past 5 seasons. Hell, Williams had two decades of great stuff. It is too early to say anything about RBR. They are the taste of the moment, and the most dominant of the decade, but for all we know they might not even exist 10 years from now.

In which case, you have to throw in every other entrant at every other level of motorsport.  After all, Cooper rose from knocking together hillclimb specials out of bits of old Fiats to the world title in a decade.  A number of the current F1 teams have humble beginnings.

The problem with nominating a football team as the best sports team in the world though is more subtle than that.  How can you nominate Bayern Munich when someone could nominate Barcelona?  There's little to split between them.  No team has been able to dominate on a continental scale.  Indeed domination on a national scale is scarce enough - those in charge like some sort of Manichean dichotomy to keep the Great Unwashed interested.  C.f. Scotland, where there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth from those up top when the clubs did the right thing (for once) and demoted Rangers into the East Stirlingshires.
