Shock move by Toro Rosso as Daniil Kvyat gets 2014 drive. Full story soon.

No da Costa surprisingly!   Unless someone else have already signed him.

Kvyat and Vergne then for Toro Rosso.

Did anyone even have him down as a possibility for STR in 2014?

At first I didn't believe this but What??? Kvyat's got potential and is quick but he's not ready yet. I fear if he doesn't impress within the first couple of years, a similar fate will happen to him what happened to Algersuari

I'm not very well versed in the various series but is this jump similar to the one Vettel made when he joined TR? 4 seasons of competition but no GP2.

Well that comment about Kvyat's Russian money in the STR seat thread seems to have been timely...

Don't get me wrong, Kvyat is good. Actually, out of the three junior team candidates I think he could actually have the most potential overall. But he was in FR2.0 this time last year and Red Bull's testing schedule this year didn't indicate he was a priority a couple of months ago. Something has obviously changed very recently. It could just be his form (which has been excellent), but his lack of experience makes it seem like there's more to it to me.

I hope it's not too soon and he'll do well. But I worry he'll end up like Alguersuari did.

Da Costa's (deleted) tweet would suggest that he's not too happy. Must be wondering where it all went wrong. After everything looked so rosy 12 months ago....must be a bit of a shock and I'm not sure where he goes from here.

well that was unexpected.

Though Russia GP will be pretty full thanks to it probably.

I'm pretty sure that literally nobody thought he would get the seat. Some thought that Sainz Jr had a chance with that impressive chance and Da Costa obviously in the box seat but Kvyat, I'm pretty sure nobody at all

I think this promotion is a combination of da Costa's not so good year and Kvyat's recent superb results. For me this season he has been the best between the three drivers of the RBJT in contention for the seat, but I agree that he's too young and inexperienced.

I hope he can adapt well, next year there will be more tests so it should be ok.

From GP3 to F1, he also looks like Vettel...a bit :cat:

Maybe Helmut Marko felt Felix dropped the ball too many times, being lazy and thinking nobody else could replace Daniel other than him. He was proven incorrect and that's a thumbs up by me

Felix better take the thumb out and show the form he showed in 2012!

At least Vettel had been a test-driver for well over a year, and had 10 or so F.Ren 3.5 races.

Anyway, I kinda feel this is just as much "Russian GP" and "Russian sponsors" as speed.

What the Kvyat?

I don't think we can compare him to Vettel. Vettel was BMW test driver for almost two years, back then there were a lot of tests and he participated in various friday sessions, so he was more experienced than Kvyat.

As I said on the other thread, I think RB's plan is to put both Sainz Jr and Kvyat in TR in a near future.

There has been a bit of gossip indicating this for a few weeks. Makes me think the poster who said Kyvat would get a run in the Friday practice session in Brazil may be for real.

He does look to have talent, but this is a move that says to me that Red Bull think RIC and JEV are enough for the time being, they're not in need of nurturing a third young gun, unless a paid young gun really surprises.

Explains Tost's recent comment about JEV being their No 1 driver next year, I thought that was a bit odd.

Poor Ant. His performances have been patchy this year but the raw talent still shone through at times. I hope he finds a way back from this.

Wow. This is really out there. I thought STR were spoiled for choice without even bringing Dany into the equation.

You know I say this as a big Seb fan so don't take it too seriously, but maybe they did a test who can do 'the finger' the best

But genuinely shocked at that. STR taking a huge gamble to be honest compared to taking on someone who has had a few runs in the F1 car and is competing in the next best series below F1... quite a surprise.

Good luck to Kvyat but the cynic in me is sure its not purely to do with talent

Daniil in the Toro Rosso for FP1 at Abu Dhabi surely?

A good choice imo. Seems to be quick out of the box in every car he drives

I can't help but feel sorry for da Costa purely because it must hurt a lot to lose a golden chance that at one point everyone was telling him was guaranteed. I think you'd have to be quite heartless not to.

But the issue some raised with him last year was that he could only perform to that standard when the pressure was off, and he hasn't proved any of the doubters wrong in 2013. And let's face it, pressure is kind of Marko's thing. They put it on AFDC this year and he didn't quite deliver. Although I think money has played a role here, Kvyat has proven he can cut it in the Red Bull environment and da Costa's WSbR campaign on it's own didn't look like quite enough to guarantee a promotion.

Looks like a scrawny Paul Di Resta to me. Maybe a bit like Vettel from 2005-2006, but not at all like Vettel-2013.

I don't quite get the fascination with Sainz, surname aside. OK, he looked decent at the test but we don't know the fuel loads. Kvyat has easily been the better of the two in GP3 this year.

Thought it was strange that Da Costa was on the WSbR test drivers list (for Carlin, not Arden Caterham). Maybe Red Bull would like to give him 1 more year to prove them wrong and want to see how his performance level is like compared to Sainz Jr.'s in the same series before promoting one of them in 2015.

If Toro Rosso & Red Bull decided Daniil is the one who deserves the Toro Rosso seat, perfect.

For sure, I don't have enough knowledge or data to judge their decision. I can only wish them all the best.

@willbuxton: First reaction? Yet another Red Bullshit decision that defies any kind of logic and leaves another huge talent on the waste dump.

What well done for getting an GP3 driver on the F1 grid when we have GP2 Champions waiting for a seat to show us their talent - the kid is not ready for F1, it's a dangerous move and it's too early.

I guess money does talk.
