As the title suggests.............

What I mean is, should there be a 12th team set up just for the top 2 in the GP2 series, which, after all is the support race for F1, or maybe for the champion of GP2 and the champion of WSR.

The 2 drivers get their chance in an F1 team, they learn the ropes and get racing experience, then if they can, they get signed to another team, or if not, they have to go and find a drive somewhere else, but at least they get the chance in F1.

Sure. Will you finance it?

No

Teams used to do test sessions to determine if a guy was good enough to became a race driver. This is just a side-effect from the test-ban.

yes but test sessions aren't races, no matter how fast they are at a test, it's totally different to racing with a load of other cars around you. yes, I know they've done it in the lower series, but F1 is differernt

If someone had problems racing others in lower series then added speed will make things more difficult. Other than that racing is racing in every category. Only the cars differ.

No.

For one thing, I don't lke the idea of mandatory seats - its up to the teams who they want to employ.

F1 is meant to be the pinnacle; rather than rushing drivers through they should arrive in F1 pretty much ready to do the job, and there are lower and midfield teams already for them to finish developing their craft.

Aside from the obvious questions of how to finance it and such, there is another problem. So now you have a system where the top 2 drivers from GP2 have an F1 drive, for one year only. The following year they are out of F1 because the next top 2 from GP2 will get their seats, unless some other team picks them up. The problem is not solved, it's just moving it from the lower formulae to the back of the grid.

How about this:

Pirelli gets a chassis to use (last seasons) from each team for ~3 weeks from april to November. The order in which Pirelli gets the chassis is reverse from the constructors finishing order. The constructor gets to nominate a driver from a lower series to do test mileage for Pirelli in this time. No new parts are allowed to be added, simply a car from the previous season with whatever parts passed testing used in a GP weekend.

This way a younger driver gets to experience F1 speeds, and pirelli gets to run whichever tires they deem needed testing. All teams will get the relevant data from Pirelli. Costs will be shared by Pirelli and the constructor and FIA.

Bernie, I expect royalties.  :drunk:

Or if needed, current year chassis? That way the lower speed teams get to test first, and the fastest team at the end of the season when it's pretty much over...

STR is a training team for Red Bull, and Marusia is partly for Ferrari (Bianchi). In the past, HRT, Minardi and Sauber as well.
