I went on Saturday and it was fantastic - the attention to detail exemplary as ever; exciting races, fun touches, perfect weather. I wondered early on about the £75 entry, but it was definitely worth it for the accessiblity and the quality of the experience - hope Lord March and the team can work out the numbers to make it viable every year.

Met all my personal must-do's:

- watching the Porsche 917 LH at speed through St Mary's (and in the paddock discovering evidence in the flesh of it's Gulf origins)

- Lauda's championship winning McLaren from 1984 (having witnessed the title-deciding GP at Estoril)

- the wonderful 1929 Bugatti Targa Florio winner (as seen on the Gordon Crosby posters over the years) lovely time-worn patina of metal and leather, so atmospheric

- finding Stirling to sign my Monaco 1960 print of him chasing Jack Brabham (and seeing his Lotus 18 in the flesh)

Random highlight was bumping into the builder of the Breadvan Lotus in the evening, chatting (shouting?) about build numbers, Mike Costin etc, under the lasers and glitterballs in the Guilty Pleasures hangar - only at Goodwood!

Amusing notices inside the Great Hall - that attention to detail...

The signature used for Sir Stirling is an early one as his  customary hand for many years has seen a shortened Stirling, so very period rather than all cobbled together recently.

BTW the  ticket price may seem expensive to some, but the seats for recent 6 Nation Championship rugby  matches down here were  £75, and I dread to think how much admission to soccer matches might be these days.

F.A. Cup Final tickets range from £40 to £60 or thereabouts.

I think they're a bit more than that.  My League Cup final ticket in 2011 was £70 and it wasn't the most expensive.   Plus the FA Cup final allocations are about 28 per team, with 60,000 being given to the corpowhores who promptly dump them on ebay.

I know we are O.T. but I've just realised that the ticket I know about is a SEMI Final one, which my nephew has just received. He paid £50 and that is the second most expensive.  As Ens says, the Final is no doubt dearer.

Ensign - what happened to the blower drive on the Type 51  in you ninth pic?

It has clearly parted company at high revs to open up the bonnet side like that - did it get fixed?

I absolutely cannot take any credit whatsoever for '72' - it was all Goodwood Motorsport and GRRC - I was agin it from the start!  I was wrong (mind you, the weather window did help...  :smoking:), and I then enjoyed it as much as everyone else.

Great photos from Martin  and Ensign, by the way - wonderful stuff.

There was a grid walk on both days, Sunday's being popular and well received. Gregor Marshall told me that it worked well for his race on Saturday, too.

I sometimes wonder about some people on TNF.  They moan about the Revival and how all the razzamattaz and fancy dress ruins the event, then when Goodwood put on a racing meeting without these distractions, they still moan and refuse to go.

I live quite near Goodwood and couldn't go to last year's Revival, for the first time; but the marketing or vision or whatever they call it for the MM fell short for me.

Firstly it's too early in the year - it's about the same weekend the Race of Champions used to be held, and I still remember being cold and/or wet at many of those when I was a lot younger and better able to shrug it off - the local weather the week before the MM was horrible and they were incredibly lucky to get a decent weekend.

Then there was eligibility - it started as members and guests only, then it was opened up a bit, but in the end was it only entry by advanced ticket or could a mere punter turn up on the day?

The 'house' nonsense was a waste of time, and the dress code wasn't clear either; nor was public access to the paddock mentioned?

And the price - £75 for one day when the Revival is £65 - I don't mind the dressing-up (and others' OTT fancy-dress) or the crowds at the Revival too much, but the marketing strategy seems to be 'you pay extra for the theatricals, air displays, pure pre-'66 races and spectacle at the Revival, and if you don't want that you pay extra again'. Although some of the MM races were different to the Revival, many were similar but with a lesser entry.

So if a ticket had been about £50 on the gate I'd have looked at the weather forecast the day before and gone; and I still can't say I regret not going. I'm hoping to go to the HSCC at Thruxton at Easter, much better value.

See you at the Revival then.

(oh, and many thanks to all those who have posted photos, some great stuff there)

It was not possible to pay on the gate. There were hardly any silly costumes amongst what felt like a far more knowledgeable crowd than at the Revival. With much reduced hospitality, you could actually appreciate Goodwood for what it is.

The crowd was half decent in size, and whilst I'm sure the organiser's would have been slightly dissapointed at least, I was still unable to purchase a programme when I arrived at 9am on Sunday morning as they had sold out!

I was very critical of the Goodwood elitism which meant very occasional visitors to the deep south like me couldn't get a ticket, Until Classic and Sports Car magazine told me I could and I was sorely tempted - I wanted a smaller crowd than the hordes at the last Revival and a relief from the panto element. The House system made me squirm though - 40 odd years after leaving my loathed Grammar School I thought I 'd left that crap behind me.. So..next year- do I go ? Will they sell me a ticket? Can I get into the paddock and if so do I have to wear a sodding blazer and tie (which I have foresworn since I retired) ? Any advance info would be appreciated

To me it was just right, apart from a few minor things that still need adjusting. Here's my view on the event as a foreigner, unburdened by the class thing that still seems to get lots of British knickers in a twist... ;)

You could ignore the house thing (I still don't know which one I was meant to be in), it seemed to be popular with the next generation of racing fans though who were having fun with the darts and penalty shoot-outs.  The dress code was vaguely smart casual but I don't think it was exactly being enforced with Gestapo efficiency.  I got in the paddock in my Oxfam tweed jacket, polo neck jumper and chinos.

The right crowd and no crowding.

Me too, still no idea what house I was in and it wasn't something that was pushed on competitors.  I'm sure it was the same for the public, but it was quite a nice little idea and I'm sure some enjoyed it (there were lots of kids things to do with the houses - it was quite Harry Potter in the way it was done), but it made no bones to me (even though we did have houses at school!!).
Dress code was supposed to be smart casual and to be fair the majority of the people were in tweed.  I looked at it that I was in a 70/80s race and therefore tweed wasn't right for me and I'm fairly sure I was the only person who wore shorts most of the weekend, but I did make sure when I was interviewed for the telly that it was an above the waist camera angle (I did have trousers with me, but I'm a typical Brit, that when the sun comes out - shorts!!) and I was wearing a jacket with a collar, there does need to be some dacorum don't you know?!

I suppose the biggest differences to the Revival was lack of crowds/traffic, access to all areas/paddocks, no driver's club or corporate sponsorship tents etc, all the drivers ate and drank with the public and it was a great atmosphere - in some ways better and more relaxed than some "normal" club events, as there were no little inter-championship cliques.
I'm sure there are things that could be improved (the advertising and selling of tickets, not running out of beer on Saturday night, no beer for sale on Friday night at all, etc - not all beer-related though!!), but on the whole a great job well done.

My only other comment would be that the whole event would've been very different if it had rained on Saturday night, as the street party and fireworks were definitely one of the highlights and I'm not sure they would've been on at all if there had been rain.

News of TV coverage of the Members' Meeting beginning this Sunday:

Highlights of Goodwood’s 72nd Members’ Meeting – the most significant new historic motor racing event of the past 15 years – will be broadcast on Channel 4 on successive weekends in April.

The pair of 25-minute shows, which have been produced by Aurora Media, will be broadcast in Sunday morning slots during April and will be presented by Amanda Stretton with commentary from Martin Haven.

Episode one will be screened on Sunday, April 13 at 0640 and will feature action from a thrilling part one of the Gerry Marshall Trophy for Group 1 touring cars – including a stirring fightback from Emanuele Pirro’s Capri – plus the Surtees and Moss Trophies and glorious Group B rally and turbocharged Formula 1 cars plus an interview with Sir Stirling Moss and Lord March.

Episode two will be broadcast on Easter Sunday, April 20 at 0545 and will include action from the world’s largest Bugatti-only race, the Grover-Williams Trophy – plus the enthralling story of racer-turned saboteur William Grover-Williams. Celebrities Chris Evans and James Martin reveal why they adore Goodwood while the low-drag Le Mans demonstration and part two of the Marshal Trophy round out an action-packed show.

The coverage of the Goodwood Road Racing Club’s newest event will also be available to download via Channel 4’s on-demand service ‘4OD’ for 30 days post-broadcast. To view, visit http://www.channel4.com/programmes/4od.

Nice to see it merits prime-time showing at 6.45am and 5.45am respectively

Does anyone know if the decision has been taken to have a Members  Meeting in 2015?  My plan is to skip Revival this year and attend next year's MM.  We would have gone this year, but there just wasn't time to organize another trip from the US.  I'm glad to read that most here who attended thoroughly enjoyed it. Apparently it was a wonderful event.

I recorded and watched yesterday's programme - the benefit of being screened so early in the day is that the advertising breaks are almost non-existent. Half-an-hour of entertainment.

Jack - have only just seen your comment.

There is no official word yet, if I am correct (DCN might possibly know something) - but the rumours are circulating !

We tried to make a reservation in the smae hotel we had this year, just to be save, but it is already full (Arundel). I have also read elsewhere that hotels are either full or filling quickly in the proximity of Goodwood.

So - I am optimistic - and have a room (near Arundel) ! ;)

Love the Bugatti photos - the one race I wanted to watch over the whole weekend and I missed it!!
Is there any chance I could have a copy of pic if me in the Viva coming out of the chicane please?
Coming out of there on the polystyrene marbles and a locked diff was a test of concentration, especially knowing that's where everyone is watching you!!

I was there yesterday, and it was as good a Goodwood meeting as I’ve been to. I recall someone in the know telling me a few years ago that he hoped the third event Goodwood are so keen to create wouldn’t be an Easter meeting, as he could remember some foul-weather occasions in the ‘50s and ‘60s, but yesterday was delightful. It was strange watching cars on the track without a leaf on the trees, but the sun outweighed the wind for most of the day, and the army of people who planted all the daffodil bulbs are to be applauded. The circuit looked in great shape.
