I sometimes wonder about some people on TNF. They moan about the Revival and how all the razzamattaz and fancy dress ruins the event, then when Goodwood put on a racing meeting without these distractions, they still moan and refuse to go.
I live quite near Goodwood and couldn't go to last year's Revival, for the first time; but the marketing or vision or whatever they call it for the MM fell short for me.
Firstly it's too early in the year - it's about the same weekend the Race of Champions used to be held, and I still remember being cold and/or wet at many of those when I was a lot younger and better able to shrug it off - the local weather the week before the MM was horrible and they were incredibly lucky to get a decent weekend.
Then there was eligibility - it started as members and guests only, then it was opened up a bit, but in the end was it only entry by advanced ticket or could a mere punter turn up on the day?
The 'house' nonsense was a waste of time, and the dress code wasn't clear either; nor was public access to the paddock mentioned?
And the price - £75 for one day when the Revival is £65 - I don't mind the dressing-up (and others' OTT fancy-dress) or the crowds at the Revival too much, but the marketing strategy seems to be 'you pay extra for the theatricals, air displays, pure pre-'66 races and spectacle at the Revival, and if you don't want that you pay extra again'. Although some of the MM races were different to the Revival, many were similar but with a lesser entry.
So if a ticket had been about £50 on the gate I'd have looked at the weather forecast the day before and gone; and I still can't say I regret not going. I'm hoping to go to the HSCC at Thruxton at Easter, much better value.
See you at the Revival then.
(oh, and many thanks to all those who have posted photos, some great stuff there)
