Hi guys,

Long time browser, first time poster. I'm doing a project on drivers using Stilo Helmets as opposed to other brands. I've found that there are fewer single seater drivers using Stilo helmets than Rallying/Tin Tops etc. Does anyone know of any single seater drivers using Stilo Helmets and why do you think other brands such as Bell, Arai are preferred to other helmet manufacturers?

Afaik Stilo don't make a helmet that complies with F1 regulations. A few GP2 drivers use them. Felipe Nasr is the only one I can think of off the top of my head. Tom Dillmann I think does, not sure.

Did Ceccon wear a Stilo when he drove in the YDT at Abu Dhabi for Toro Rosso??? I know he wore one in GP2.

Davide Valsecchi would probably be their highest profile single seater driver.  If he doesn't use one for F1 testing with Lotus then I guess they don't make one that complies with F1 regs as Chas suggests.

Which leaves what as a reason? That the drivers think they're inferior? Or that the experience of Bell and Arai count for more? Or $$$?

Valsecchi did wear a Stilo when testing for Lotus, just looked at a few photos and the logo is on the front.

Arai has the best support crew in the Paddock, that's why many Drivers prefer the japanese companys Helmets. From my personal experience: I like Arais more than Bells. They are more comfortable. I have no comparison to Stilo or Schuberth or Uvex or Sparco or OMP though. Never tried these.

Thanks for the help so far guys! I guess without the same paddock support as fastwriter points out, it may be hard to penetrate the top ranks of single seater racing. One thing I have been surprised by however, is the prevalence of Stilo Helmets stateside, specifically Nascar. Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth, Joey Logano, Mark Martin, Denny Hamlin and Dale Earnhardt Jr all use Stilo I believe, yet I haven't found any IndyCar drivers using Stilo and only one in the Indy Lights series.

Maybe it has to do with the Intercom Systems they use in Nascar. That's a field, where the Stilo Helmets are quite good at. They are all Peltor-compatible, can be run with digital radio or even cell phones. But that's just a guess.

Good point. I know Dale Earnhardt Jr had a heavy crash last year which then led to him switching to a Stilo Helmet but unsure of the other drivers reasons. Appreciate the names DampMongoose and SpartanChas, does anyone know of any other drivers who use Stilo in single seaters?

Have seen them used in the YDT quite a bit, and in GP2.

They might just not have the financial power like Arai, Bell or Schuberth when it comes to sponsorship and endorsement.

A quick web search reveals a testimonial page at still, a few more gp2 and auto up drivers are there....if that helps, although based.on your project you've probably been there first.

I asked Mark Martin via Twitter in March 2012 why he had chosen a Stilo helmet versus other brands.

His answer was simple: comfortable and well ventilated.

I've never seen a bad shirt print on a helmet before.

Didn't Loeb also use a stilo in his f1 test?

Edit: Yup.

He was only really "making noise" due to Williams' connection to F2 as chassis builder.
