Just a bit of harmless fun.

For anyone who does not know, Del Boy Trotter is a fictional TV character over here in England. He is a shady business man, who is always trying quick rich schemes. He is also a wannabe yuppie with a eye for the ladies. Bit of a con artist also.

Here is a video to enlighten anyone further - http://www.youtube.c...h?v=JSGRq6aQfFA

So which current F1 personality is most like him. I have 2 candidates

Ron Dennis

ron-dennis.jpg

My case for him is pretty easy, just watch this video where he tries to get a young Michael Schumacher into joining McLaren - http://www.youtube.c...h?v=wYI6PFNDFrg just screams shady business man.

The definition of a wheeler and dealer if I ever saw one. Plus various scandals over the years have made Ron seem quite shady. Was last seen trying to twist Lewis Hamilton's arm to rejoining McLaren last year in Canada. He failed

Eddie Jordan

eddie_jordan.jpg

Well this photo shows that Eddie has a eye for the ladies! Jordan is a self professed "wheeler and dealer", if you read his book it will give you insight as to why. The guy went around the globe trying to flog sponsors to buy in to his Jordan team.

A bit like Del Boy Trotter, he is seen as a lovable rogue in the paddock. Plenty of flash to him as well.

I could go on, but I will leave it to you guys to put forward some more

Man, I forgot about him.

I left Bernie out on purpose, but forgot about the Flav. Great choice

First name that came to my mind was John Button, just because he's a bit "Gaaw, lav a dack!"

Vettel kinda. He got rich quickly (won WDCs), from the hard work of other people (Newey and the rest of the MK crew).

I know what you mean, but Jensons' dad is a too higher class, he is more likely to say "Read the Daily Express, old chap"

I know the same could be said for Ron Dennis, so I was guilty as well.

That's why he is lower tier. He wants to be one of 'em.

As opposed to back in the good old days when Fangio designed his own car, slaved away in a metal works crafting the engine parts, personally screwed every nut and bolt onto his machine, flew and sailed it all across the world all by himself, filled out the paperwork to enter every race, did all his own pitstops, and became five-time world champion as a one man army?

Foul. Del Boy Trotter got rich off pure luck in the end, none of his schemes worked and no one worked hard for him. Seb is more a shorter version of Rodney, pretty slim and unassuming.

Horner is Boycie though if you think about it, Horner is trying to flog his old Rb's like a used car salesman.

Didn't he also drill for his own oil, and refine into the petrol he carried around in his hand luggage?  And grew the trees from which he extracted the rubber to make his tyres.  Vettel's done nothing to deserve his success.

Brundle has referred to himself as Arthur Daley, because of his car dealing background.

Yeah, whilst Derek is a bit of a wheeler-dealer, or used to be, the Delboy moniker is only because his name's Derek.  That article's suggestion that he was given it when he was sixteen because he drove a three-wheeler like Delboy Trotter's is a bit unlikely - he was 27 when the TV show was first aired!

I guess Fangio could give Tony Stark a run for his money...

Cars were much harder to drive back in the day. The driver was a lot more important and made a bigger difference.

After seeing today's headlines it seems the 3 Del Boy's were Jordan, Prost and Walkinshaw... $10m paid into their personal bank accounts by Bernie in 2001.

Bernie Ecclestone - started as a east end used car dealer, friends with some people doing the great train robbery etc etc.

You do know that Fangio actually designed and built his own car called La Negrita, don't you? 3.9 litre Chevy truck engine in a Ford Model T chassis, went like stink ...

Allegedly.

But then most people in racing knew Roy James, so Bernie was hardly unique in that regard.

Walkinshaw is a good call. He always felt slighly shady and in the end Arrows went into bankruptcy.

But Andrea Sassetti and of course Windsor/Anderson are good additions in this thread.

One more addition is a certain Stefanovich and his Stefan GP. I think USF1 and StefanGP are one of the shadiest things related to recent F1 racing. Other teams actually went to participate and have some kind of professional and sustainable business model, but I have no idea, what these guys were actually doing!

Alain Prost might just be the furthest thing away from Del Boy Trotter possible.

Personally I'd say Eddie Jordan, especially after the Vodafone sponsorship thing.

However hearing about the $10m Bernie paid him directly, he sounds a bit more like Father Ted. The money was only 'resting' in his personal bank account you see.

I would have said that it was Ron Dennis who could not be less like Del Boy.  Obsessively hard working and serious, concerned with every fine detail to the Nth degree, and extremely successful, building a billion pound business empire from nothing.

Yeah, but he was still a wheeler and dealer, you cannot tell me that he does not come across as shady in the video I posted of him trying to headhunt Schumi.

And come on, there is something a bit shady about him.

I think Flav and EJ are two very good shouts. Maybe leaning a little more towards EJ for his wheeler dealer-ness. In terms of "flash" appeal you've got to consider Vijay Mallya...

"Mange tout Rodney, mange tout."

Oh, and Bernie has to be Granddad, surely? Or Uncle Albert.

No there isn't.  You must be thinking of someone else.  He was no more a wheeler and dealer than anyone who set up race teams back in the 1970s.  To succeed in motor sport, you have to be fast on your feet, but Ron Dennis made it a success by being meticulous, not by playing fast and loose.

As for Schumacher, of course he tried to get him - so did every other team principal.

You do know this thread is just a bit of fun right? Stop taking it so seriously

And you are very wrong, I never said he was shady in practice, just he seemed shady. Also, watch and listen how he tries to get Schumi, "just look after yourself" and all that, he comes across as a right shady character, whether he is or not, is not the debate.

I can imagine Ross Brawn constantly saying to Hamilton "this time next year we'll be world champions!" only for the car to eat its own tyres at every race.

Ron Dennis in a Reliant van?  I think not  :D .

Mind you I always thought that was wrong for Del too; he'd have been in an old Jag surely.

Some great candidates in this thread,  Tom Walkinshaw is my favourite I think - istr he sold the same car to Ford four times :smoking: .
