I thought it had a vibration or engine problem for most of last year, but they sorted out and can now test 'properly' ?

Engine issues yes but I didn't know the vibration was to the level he described (drivers having difficulties even at breathing). Anyway I don't know if Davidson was referring to last year or to the Sebring test

Meanwhile Audi has abandoned their unproven exhaust recovery system and thus will only use one hybrid powertain this year, so clearly these new cars are causing some concerns. But at least the VAG brands have had more time than Toyota

Confirmed as only 2MJ energy recovery capacity, engine size increased from 3.7 to 4 liters (but same basic architecture, single-turbo V6 TDI).

That's one of the better paintjobs they've run, I like that they're trying to dazzle-camo the fin a bit.

It looks fantastic, though I bet the driver can't see a thing with so little crystal surface in that canopy. :D

Does anybody else miss when Audi had silver cars with red/yellow/black flashes to differentiate the cars, this new paint jobs a mess. Add that to the extremely dull Porsche livery and I just hope Toyota and Rebellion can provide something a bit more interesting to look at.

It's a bit too similar to the Porsche, isn't it?

Maybe one day we'll see the teams with Title sponsors....

Porsche (and presumably Toyota) are running the full 8MJ's of energy recovery aren't they? Will that equate to a big performance difference over a race distance?

Sounds like they have to run more weight, so it's not necessarily an advantage for them.

Not sure why they continue with adding MORE sub-classes that run to different rules, but hey that's what the ACO does in the 21st century!

Chances are Audi got it right again and Toyota and Porsche will be there mostly to make up the numbers.

I wouldn't call them separate classes, more like sub-sections to the regulations.

Yeah definitely, one of my favourite colour schemes, simple but effective. You could tell they were teammates and yet instantly tell them apart all at the same time.

Wrong. Toyota has had the supercapacitor since 2007 in the Supra HV-R. Now theyre running it in 4wd configuration like their system was meant to do. The engine is an evolution of the RV8K, which has ran since the early-mid 2000's in one configuration or another. Even back to the champ car days in the late 90's. So maybe on track testing has been going on longer with the porsche and Audi, but the concept behind the car has been in design since 2012. And the internals have a storied history that goes back longer than anything Porsche or Audi are running.

Should the Porsche add a little bit more red stickers, i won't be able to tell the difference from the Audi. Really bad paint job from Audi.

Pictures have not flattered this car. To me, it looks like an awkardly-narrow closed-cockpit open-wheeler with fenders.

Isn't that the base description for most modern prototype sportscars? There aren't many that are truly good looking IMO. Personally, I don't mind the 919 so much. The narrower P1 cars look more compact and nimble on track from what I've seen.

The R18 and its predecessors never really conveyed that for me, though; the R15 in particular looked more like a big diesel-powered barge with wheels stuck in the sides.

Something about the 919 just looks wrong to me. Not sure why.

I prefer it to the Porsche though. It's like they plastered some asymmetrical black letters on it or something.

You've seen the top view haven't you?

Re the Audi livery, I reckon if the fin was tapered like the black part for real it would look much better IMHO.
Doubt it would work though, I'm no scientician.

The car will be released at 12pm CET. A little over 3 hours from now. Twitter feed @Toyota_Hybrid and toyotahybridracing.com will have it covered.

The Audi's is just an evolution of last years (and looks quite good imo.)

It's the Porsche that's completely dull, and unoriginal (in light of Audi's recent liveries)

Reports are that the TS040 will be keeping the blue and white livery. At least we can tell it apart from the Germans... although the Peugeot confusion might carry on in some places.  :rotfl:

I understand that blue is for the hybrid - a Toyota should be mainly red & white, with possibly a splash of green if sponsored by Castrol.

However, I really hope they can finally get that well deserved Le Mans win; to think only one Japanese car has ever won.

6 MJ energy recovery capacity for the TS040, estimated 1000bhp under full engine + ERS power. Downgraded from 8 MJ because of weight worries, and possible issues with the fuel flow meter (now where have we heard this before...?)

EDIT: Engine enlarged from 3.4 to 3.7 liters, still normally-aspirated, engine powers the rear wheels, hybrid energy goes to all 4. So at least one of the factory LMP1s remains NOISY.  :smoking:

Best looking car hands down. The headlights look fine. Huge hybrid power will definitely make for a boost in performance. 18,000km testing done, a third of that on the 2nd car!

Do the rules state that the front of the light clusters have to be vertical? It's one part of modern LMP's that I really don't like (my other gripe being the narrow cockpits).

Manufacturers in sports car racing very rarely have a title sponsor. I guess it is because they can bankroll it themselves without one, and would prefer to simply advertise their tech (Audi with E-Tron, etc) than give space to another company.

But yeah, all three liveries are pretty...uninspiring. At least the cars all look somewhat different.

The side profile of the Toyota is particularly ugly. Looks too square and bulky with those front fenders.

With 480PS of four-wheel-drive hybrid boost in addition to the 520PS 3.7litre petrol engine, the TS040 HYBRID, launched today at Paul Ricard, has a maximum power of 1000PS and represents the most advanced hybrid technology in racing.

1000!!!

This will be soo crazy in qualifying   Wonder how many of those they can use within the 100kg/hour rate though?

Fuel flow for 6 MJ petrol is 87.9 kg/h actually. And the engine itself is only about 500-550 bhp, all the rest is from energy recovery.

Also, it seems that the cars have to run 2 or 3 fuel flow sensors on the fuel line, third one being if there is a return fuel line.

For enough light to be used to shout "GET OUT OF MY WAY, PUNY GTE-AM CAR!" from about half a kilometer behind. Joking aside, most likely for maximum headlight range at night.

It's not the lights so much as the front fender seemingly having to be a 90 degree chunk.

Though I like the nosecone on the Toyota.

Should be good battle in hybrid class this year...

Audi... big diesel motor... small hybrid

Toyota...V8 gas... medium hybrid

Porsche...V4 gas...big hybrid

Audi wins it all I think... but Toyota should be fast.

the Audi isn't really good looking but when a saw the Porsche  that is an ugly car, and then the champion of ugliness Toyota appears. Le mans prototypes used to be the mos beautiful racing cars Porsche 917,956, 962 ,Mercedes C11,Ferrari 512 and many others, maybe I'm getting too old.

Blame CAE/CFD for this. Before the engineers went for streamlined shapes and simple flowing shapes but with the increase in the sophistication of the modelling they can do, they find ways to play with the air and create all sort of vortices and high/low pressures to get the most out of the cars.

And the regulations don't help either.

True, but they are getting uglier every year, I know the regulation are tha cause of this, they don't build an ugly car just because, but it has to stop somewhere jus like F1 . aesthetics and performance can merge just like the old days , write new regulations before a kenworth looks nicer than a race car..oh wait
