So, apparently the Mexico flag Macca is flying on their store has a cannabis leaf on it.

Just because you qualify ahead of somebody doesn‘t make you faster than him. The faster driver is the one who takes less time to complete the race distance. Speed=distance/time

Yes, he did that on the first part of the season and he wasn't faster because he got out qualified, on the second part of the season he got ahead of Kamui on qualy and had a few races full of incidents and Kamui got ahead of him in races, he wasn't fastest because Kamui was ahead in racing...

... I agree with you, but it seems the majority are just lunatics.

Maybe somebody can correct me if I am wrong, but whilst his fathers performance has no direct impact on his, the only F1 driver that I can think of who was the Son of an ex F1 driver that went on to better things than their Father is Jacques Villeneuve. Jan didn't exactly light up the F1 world, so inevitably it needs to be asked if he can. Of course, he can, but history would put him IIRC, only the second person to do so if he did. Am I missing somebody?

Damon Hill perhaps? OK, maybe not really better but at least equaling which wasn't that bad   ;)

And how about Alberto Ascari? OK, his father - a top GP driver of his era - wasn't an F1 driver but he had a pretty legitimate excuse for that  :D

While Nico Rosberg is perhaps not "doing better things" you can't realy call him a failure. I rate Gilles higher than his son BTW - but that's just a matter of opinion.

Not really. We have 11 wins to 6, 26 podiums to 13, 13 poles to 2, 1 championship to 0. Even fastest laps is beaten 9 to 8. In every conceivable point, Jacques did better than Gilles. There really isn't anything Jacques could have done that was worse than his father, apart from dying, which obviously makes you better in the history books.

As for Hill, whilst he won more races and podiums, he only won 1 WDC, whereas his Father won 2, so doesn't count. We are also only talking about F1, so pre F1 doesn't count. Nico may not be a failure, but he certainly hasn't currently matched his dad.

So far I am right in assuming only Jacques has beaten his dad in F1?

Damon Hill scored more victories in less races than his father, and whilst he didn't win two titles he was but a Schumacher away from the 94 one.

Christian Fittipaldi did a fair bit better than his father.

Best finish 4th x3. - 5th x1

Best grid position 6th - 9th

Points 12 - 3

Compared to his uncle of course, he didn't achieve much.

I think you are being deliberately provocative!

Gilles won 6 GPs from 67 starts, his lad won 11 from 165 starts.  So Papa had a better hit rate.  And he didn't spend most of his F1 career looking more and more like a sad spent force....

While I think rmpugh is being provocative in that statement, Jacques actually won 11 GPs in his first 31 starts. His hit rate only got worse after the 2000 Brazilian GP. Had he been killed in early 1998 then we'd probably all wonder what he'd have achieved in the rest of his career.

That's why I don't think it's worth comparing their stats if we're rating their talent. Jacques' look worse because he spent too much of his career in uncompetitive machinery, despite some really promising perfomances in the early BARs which came to naught. Wheras Gilles' post-1982 will always be speculation.

Going by their on track escapades, Gilles produced seemed to be the better driver, but you can't deny that his son achieved more. The question was "Son of an ex F1 driver that went on to better things than their Father", not who was rated higher.

Edit: Strikethough the mistake but I can't really be bothered to find out which race it was.

So Whitmarsh says a team principal backed out of a deal to take Magnussen next year.

Who was it?

I hoped and tried to find him a cockpit - I even did a deal and shook hands with a team principal up and down this paddock - an absolute deal - but he stepped back…

Q: …but you don’t want to say who it was?
MW:
I would like to but I won’t. Even after 25 years I find that difficult to deal with - I know I shouldn’t, but I am still hopelessly naive. I still think that if you look somebody in the eye and shake hands then that’s a done deal. When it turns out like in the Magnussen case, then I am shocked - and I tell myself ‘learn, don’t be naive’.

That's what I think too. The only other team McLaren have a relationship with is Marussia and I doubt they'd want to place Magnussen that far down the grid.

On a different note. One thing that struck me as interesting was that Jenson Button was in favour of keeping Perez over Magnussen. And since Magnussen has been signed Button has gone on record as saying it is a gamble for the team. It strikes me that Button is worried that Magnussen might out perform him, whereas he is happy he's got the measure of Perez.

Typical race driver thinking from Button then. They all want a status quo when things are going their way.

Actually he said the he preferred an experienced driver because of the high level of development work that would be required this and next year because of the rule changes. As I have said before if he was worried about team-mates he would not have joined McLaren in the first place. Considering the number and quality of team-mates he has had before and beaten I doubt he is "worried" in that sense about Magnussen.

I'm right in thinking that Magnussen will be the first teammate Jenson has had that he has 'known' about beforehand? Jenson surely has worked with him in the simulator on programs, and must have had access to Kevin's data from the two tests he's done. Maybe he knows how good he is already?

Realy? Now we are going to talk which team does not hold his word in a deal and not the worst season of McLaren in all it's history?

As far as I understand it we are not talking about the worst  season of McLaren in all it's history either. I took this thread to be about Magnussen being confirmed as a race driver for McLaren in 2014, there is likely a thread or two dealing with Button versus Perez and McLaren this season compared to all previous.

MW: The last time a rookie won the series was Lewis

Um no, the last time a rookie won the series was Nico Hulkenberg. How does an F1 team principal not know his facts?

Unless he's counting GP2 Asia as experience enough to not consider a driver a rookie..but they were using the old chassis..

This is Jenson we're talking about. The man who went into Lewis Hamiltons team when a lot of people thought he was going to be destroyed.

Maybe that's why Whitmarsh hasn't considered Hulkenberg for a drive. He has forgotten of his existence for some reason. :stoned: Maybe someone should point him in Brundle style in the US GP: "Oh look at that guy fourth on the grid. Never noticed him. He could be a good driver. Should we consider him for a seat?"

Interesting article anyway. Gives a rough insight into how does his pecking order of driver ranking goes. There is little between Hulkenberg, di Resta and Perez in his mind, while he thinks Magnussen could be on Hamilton/Vettel level. Considering many people give Hulkenberg a high praise, including several insiders, it is interesting to see Whitmarsh having a different opinion. Well, we here people on the forums have different opinions too, so why not F1 insiders. :p  Only time will tell, who is right and how adequate are Whitmarsh's talent evaluation skills.

Thought this topic could do with a bump as testing has now started and we can start to get an idea of how Kevin might go in 2014.

Personally I'm really excited about him in a way I haven't been since Button jumped into the Williams. He's obviously extremely talented, but you can say that about quite a few drivers. His Dad's experiences though really seem to have grounded him and he appears to be putting a huge effort into getting his head around F1 while still keeping his enjoyment of it.

His testing so far has been extremely promising. Obviously lap times mean pretty much nothing so far with everyone working on general handling and reliability but visually he's been able to push the McLaren in a steady repeatable way.

I haven't put an F1 bet on since 2009 when it turned out extremely well  :D  This year I'll have one on each of the McLaren drivers.

Effectively making this thread into a driver thread, not allowed.

Close. lol

The only McLaren that Perez and Magnussen should have access to is in a video game.
