Okay, since no one seems to be about to explain: why? Why would you booby trap a rally course? Just being a dick? Some kind of politcal statement? Get out of my country? What?

Too many crash videos on TV. People who are impressed by monster trucks.

There are people who go to races hoping to see crashes. It's only a short hop from that to making one happen.

True story: some years ago I was in a pub, minding my own business, browsing through LJK Setright's 'Flying Colours' - hardly a pocket book and not easy to hide. Some idiot spots the book and feels compelled to tell me how he'd been at Silverstone in 1999 and seen Michael Schumacher crash right in front of him. Now, I'm no Schumacher fan, but I'd draw the line at gloating over him breaking his leg. This guy thought it was funny.

Eugh. That's awful. I've read about political acts like this in Paris-Dakar but it didn't even occur to me someone might do that just to see a crash.

Turns out it was a collision with an animal, and not a booby trap, that was the cause.

The last data from his tracker had his speed at 50 mph. Something like a small animal in silt like that will launch you. On a harder surface you'd have more of a chance of it glancing off the bike depending on where it hit. There are still some pushing the original reports but this looks to be the most plausible. Regardless of how it happened it's still a tragic outcome.

Did you see the BBC documentary,'The Killer Years' ? In that there was a brief voxpop interview with three middle aged men who admitted that they liked to see crashes at the circuits. This was of course in the era when crashes had a high casualty and fatality rate. Just normal spectators.

This thread is just an example of how the Internet achieves to turn people crazy.

Look at how you immediately assumed it was a murder, when there is so little information.

You are all nuts!!!

Not all of us did that. Please don't generalize.

Well considering the race is notorious for booby traps and many of the initial media reports suggested a trap was to blame, it is hardly jumping to assumptions.

No, very much the exception and inserted purely to fit the fairly sensationalist and incompletely argued agenda of a flawed programme.

Heartfelt words from Marc Coma on his Facebook...

DEP my friend.

I am spending hours in front of the computer watching videos, photos and trying to write some words but it is so difficult… Kurt Caselli left us.. one of the best and certainly a very good friend. He was very professional in and out of the track, loved for everybody for his friendliness and honesty. We spend a lot of moments together and I have only great memories which will remain on me forever. We will miss you. My condolence to your family, friends and KTM Team. RIP my friend.

People, some of which had not heard of this phenomenon before, were condemning the placing of 'booby traps' on a rally stage by boorish Mexican thugs. That seems fair enough to me, especially when we do not know whether or not Caselli was killed in this manner.

No doubt there are people like that, but all news organisations, or at least such a large majority that it's hard to find the exception, will chose to put on the guy with the outrageous, provocative, or ill-voiced opinion rather than actually finding a representative 'normal' person. It's what they do.

You should always wait for more viable information in this kind of situation, as was demonstrated yesterday evening.
