Probably full of 'Ten Quid Poms'.

 

The Sitmar line which owned Fairstar, Fairsea and the Castel Felice had a contract with the federal government to ship the ten quid poms out to oz.  I worked in a  bank liaision role on the ships for a few trips around from Freemantle and have very fond memories of some early morning entrances to Sydney harbour which is surely one of the world's greatest stretches of water.

 Add to that Shaw Savill Line, which operated the New Australia (later to be renamed the Arkadia), which brought several 'famous' migrants to Oz  in 1955.  Included me as a zero pound POM (parents were 10 pound POMs) and, probably more importantly, the young lady who later became mum to the singing budgie and her sister. We were definitely packed to the gunnels, dad and me in a cabin with 4 other males, mum and my sister in another cabin with 4 other females, wonder if Kylie's mum to be was one of them?

I found something recently which may be of interest.

 

It's a video about Darling Harbour goods yard, by the National Film and sound archives,

and can be found on the NFSA you tube page.

 

It's taken in the late sixties, and includes steam locos, ships, cars & all the old buildings

before the knife went through creating what's there today.
