On page 6 there is a picture of car #41 with the caption telling us it is a Lotus 23. I have to say, it looks like no Lotus 23 I have ever seen!

I've seen pictures of that car before in a few other sources, similarly described as a BMW-powered Lotus 23, but couldn't find out anything else about it.
I wondered if it really is based upon a 23 -- or if all those references are drawing on one erroneous source?
On the face of it, a 23 would seem unlikely underpinnings for such a car, given its overall size, the power train installation and loads the chassis would take from its aerodynamics and those huge slick-shod wheels - not to mention a day-long pounding around Daytona's bankings and infield. Whoever made the front bodywork had obviously had a look at a McLaren M8... that tapered feature behind the front wheels might just be possible over a 23, given that the bodywork appears rather wider than the Lotus's space frame - but it's hard to believe.
I did also wonder if it was a late change of car from the original entry list that has led to a chain of mistaken identity - but would anyone really have entered a Lotus 23 for that race? I was mildly surprised to see a B16 coupe entered (although that only a handful of years old), never mind a 23.
Surely it's a contemporary monocoque G6 car, but I wonder what... And is that wide rear-view mirror on those 'pylons'?
Lots of interesting pics there - haven't got beyond page 6 yet though...
