Rod Carroll had the Lola F5000 flying at SMSP today.
I understand Rod is okay.

Good to see, and hear, some Big Banger sporties there yesterday.
.
The MS7 was there also - see photo in earlier post.
(edit) I didn't arrive there until 10:30 on the Sunday and the Matich SR3 didn't run after that time, Pity as' I'm after a snap for the 'Now and Then' thread.

Nice pics Peter...but the SR3 was also a fairly big banger

I spoke to Rod this morning. He is very lucky and a bit sore. He said medical attention was first rate and he is glad that he built the roll bar 1 1/2" higher than required. Incredibly there is not a mark on his helmet.
I also spoke to Damon Hancock straight out of burns unit at Concord. A couple of third degree burns which may require some grafts. Ankle, back of hands and forearms burnt. Treatment today removed dead skin etc to prevent infection. You can see the footage on retro speedfest live stream. Very scary. the belts melted and he struggled to get out. If the tanks had blown he would be dead but luckily the fire went out when he shut it down.

Damon Hancock's car was leaking fuel quite badly on the warmup lap. I hope he has a full and speedy recovery.
Posted 05 May 2014 - 23:07
I wonder if he was meat-balled...

What happened? By the pics it appears to be a R/R tyre failure. I guess the yellow car got pinballed by the out of control car. Is that ok besides the obvious wing damage?
How much damage to the Carroll 5000. Quite a deal I imagine. Though is it hang on stuff or tub too?

He locked up his brakes trying to slow for the corner and went over David Kent's left rear wheel, that in turn launched him over David's car. The on board footage is spectacular to say the least. The first thing he did on landing was to apologise.
I never will understand why people like F5000s.
That will defenitly do it! Never nice to be tripped over or worse trip over someone.
5000s look tough, sound tough and in period were as quick as F1. That is why most like them.
Speed differences and poor driving or prep sounds the culprit here.

Have you ever been close to one?

Sadly these days, in many situations the owners' skill behind the wheel is largely overshadowed by the size of their cheque-books...
But they are awesome weapons that need a great deal of skill to tame.
And you probably would like to drive one too. As would I. Not necesarily race one. Just have a day in one.

I would not be too quick to judge Rod Carroll ..... the question must be asked ...... what was David doing in the middle of the road and way off line ??? Did he see the Lola diving down the inside and moved over to "shut the gate".
If David was not "covering the corner" there would not have been a coming together !
Sadly, this sort of attitude has found its way into historic racing.

Please don't think that was intended as a commentary on Rod Carroll's expertise - I have absolutely no idea how capable or otherwise he may be. But as a generalisation the cap will fit quite a few out there.I would not be too quick to judge Rod Carroll ..... the question must be asked ...... what was David doing in the middle of the road and way off line ??? The car is Ivan Glasby's ex Bob Gerard Cooper Bristol T44
Posted 08 May 2014 - 22:41
Timbo do you know what power plant is in the Green Cooper?
I thought the noise factor would preclude that car. It has on others with similar exhausts.

Yeah, probaly sneaks in because it was the standard Bristol exhaust of the time.

It always amazes me that they can have the noise meter out at Eastern Creek, and ping someone for going a db over the limit, while next door at Sydney Dragway, the Top Fuel dragsters can happily shatter the same noise meters with their open exhausts.

Great photos Mph911.
Agreed. The one Dan commented on looking down is a great and unusual pic especially. To me that is an ugly motorcar. or at least from that angle. I would hate to be the passenger in the obligatory passenger seat!

I believe the Snape Zephyr special has been mothballed because of the exhausts as such.

You're assuming I am of the "selfie" generation?
Thank you for the thumbs up, I will post a few more later.
It was a great weekend, I ran my 911 in Regularity.
Does anyone know if the weekend was a success crowd-wise?
Posted 10 May 2014 - 06:39
Crowds? Eastern Creek?
I was only able to make it on the Sunday, but while the crowds were up for a normal historic meeting, I'm sure they were expecting more people through the gates.
In Sydney, we can only dream of Phillip Island or Winton sized crowds for historic meetings.

I don't think so Lee, you can see it racing at Winton in a fortnight's time.

The 2015 Retro Fest was held this weekend yet not one post about the event (arguably Aus' second biggest Historic meeting) on this forum. It kinda signals to me the state of historic racing at the moment (or is it this forum?). I'm not sure what size crowd attended but I looked at the entry list and gave it a miss. Where the hell are all the cars and why aren't they racing or on display?

Well, when the HSRCA decided to ditch the Tasman Revival as their big meeting and go chasing a Muscle Car Masters type all singing, all dancing, pizzazz-filled extravaganza...maybe they should have looked at marketing and advertising a little more?
I probably would have gone along if Ed or someone had slipped a little prompt on TNF a week or two out...
http://forums.autosp...s/#entry7196304
When I was actively Flagging (well there was SOME activity involved! :-), I would often start a thread in advance to promote a little interest if I didn't see any of the many HSRCA members here doing something similar.
However, this is only TNF, I have heard/seen radio and even TV promotions in the past...but Sydney-ites are notoriously hard to coax from their over-mortgaged, over-priced little boxes!
