What you think is going to be the pecking order for 2014 considering the regulation changes, I know it's  a guessing game since we don't have a clue which engine  will be the strongest one and which team will make the best pakage,  here is my guess.

1. Mercedes

2. Ferrari, Red Bull

3. Mclaren

4. Williams

5. Force India

6. Sauber

7. Lotus

8. Toro Rosso

9. Marussia

10.Caterham

In the beginning of the season or late in the season? I think these could be quite different. Also track dependency, pecking order in Monaco or Monza setup?

What are these guesses based on .... we havnt even had the first test yet.... if its credible rumours, please say - but otherwise there is no way to tell before testing.

... how many folks on here predicted that Macca would move from the best/second best car in 2012 to an alleged dog in 2013?? ... or that Macca would essentially swap places with Merc??

Reading or hearing some media speculation in useless at this point.... the media is the last place where inside info gets circulated  ... and right now the state of the 2014 cars is inside info.

You're right.

The only issue here is that it is a long winter break. :p

I have no idea, but there is a chance that 1 of the engines will be so far ahead of the others in either performance or reliability that the cars running that engine will be the teams fighting it out for the top positions and the other teams will be unable to compete no matter how good their car is - maybe? possibly? Can't wait to find out, only 64 days until winter testing :)

Marussia most definitely will win. Why ?

Cosworth merges with P.U.R.E and have secretly come up with a beast of an engine that Marussia takes at a reduced price and sole representative and Jules Bianchi and Max Cilton finish 1-2 in the WDC with Marussia winning WCC by 250 points margin.

They go on to dominate F1 for 6 years with Adrian Newey joining in year 3 and Chilton winning sports personality of the year 3 years in a row.

Thats how absurd these speculations are :)

Only based on current guesses that Mercedes is the engine to have next year, followed by Ferrari. Still placed Red Bull above Ferrari though because of Newey and their development capabilities.

why dont you just make a thread list your favorite teams in order of preference and be done with it?

there is no way anybody can make even a semblance of an educated guess so ...

I can't believe that Renault would get a turbo engine wrong so....................

Red Bull

Merc = Ferrari = Lotus = McLaren

FI = Williams = Sauber = TR

Marussia = Caterham

Not sure why people have a problem with a thread like this. Yeah we know it's all based on speculation, but is it doing anyone any harm by having a guess? No. It's little more than a bit of fun to pass the long cold winter days before they get to Melbourne. Anyway, for me......

1: Red Bull

2: Mercedes

3: Ferrari

4: McLaren

5: Lotus

6: Force India

7: Sauber

8: Williams

9: Toro Rosso

personally I think these changes have been overhyped, much like every race redbull pretend they about to break down to try and give fans excitement.

1: Red Bull

2: Ferrari

3: Mercedes

4: McLaren

5: Lotus

6: Sauber

7: Williams

8: Force India

9: Toro Rosso

10: Caterham

11: Marussia

Reasons?

New personel at ferrari will push them up.  I also feel merc will drop down if they lose brawn.

Mclaren back above lotus.  Good year following a off year and lotus seem even more broke than mclaren.

Sauber are very good at aero, they only fell off early in year in my view because of cashflow issues they couldnt manufacture upgrades.  I am surprised the hulk hasnt chose to stay with them.

Williams I feel will jump up, they realised one big part of their issues this year and also now have massa and pat symonds there.

Force india will struggle along with toro rosso.

Usual 2 at the back.

This list assumes equali reliability between each team.  As reliability is the biggest likelyhood of shaking up the order.

Complete and utter guessing game but I am confident of the top 4 being:

1. Merc=RBR

2. Ferrari=McLaren

I'm expecting Force India to be the darkhorse, they had one heck of a car at the beggining of 2013 but had to stop developing it for 2014.

Plus the rumors of the Merc engine being the best.... we shall see

I Disagree , I think it's going to be very close between the 2 , but it's too early to discuss this since they haven't been confirmed

Looking back over the answers here it's amusing we're all expecting 2014 to be unpredictable and all, yet we're all predicting the exact same "surprises".  :drunk:  Mercedes to win, McLaren, Force India and Williams to improve, Red Bull to drop a little but still stay as close contenders, Lotus and Sauber to drop back big time.

I think people underrate Mclaren

Just because they screwed up their car this year doesn't mean they aren't still a front running team

My guess is

1) Merc

2) Mclaren

3) RB

4) Williams

5) Lotus

6) Ferrari

I believe the engine rumours..

Actually I rate Sauber's ability to design a fast car pretty highly, but it seems quite possible driver line-up is going to be their achilles heel. I don't see anyone among available options for them that could match, say, Hulkenberg-Perez at Force India. If they get Sutil, that's not too bad though. When I was drawing up my WCC ranking, I had a pretty big dilemma between Williams and Sauber.

About Williams - I feel fundamentally they can design a fast car, but just like 2009 and 2012 they are going to waste points. Like Mercedes or McLaren, they are not very good at maximizing the potential for whatever reason.

Mercedes

Red Bull

Lotus

Ferrari

I'm surprised that many people don't rate McLaren, they have a lot of good people and have been working hard on the 2014 regs for a while now. So if Mercedes is the best engine, I think it could be McLaren that have the upper hand.

Red Bull are going to be unreliable because cooling vs aero is Newey's Achilles Heel. Ferrari and Mercedes will be on par. Mclaren better but still not great. Force India to be very strong, lotus and Sauber on par with Williams. Then STR, Caterham, etc.

With the new engine regulations and all the associated factors with that (installation, reliability, delivery, consumption, etc) its quite possible that the "pecking order" won't be decided by the constructors, but the engine builders, Renault Sport F1, Mercedes HPP and Ferrari. To that end it is anyones guess, but I've a slight feeling that Ferrari may have the advantage here, their strong suit has usually been their power units and collaboration with the dynamics of the car. On the other hand, if I had to say who I think might lose out here - Mercedes for me. Just a feeling that they may produce a powerful but problematic unit...

McLaren have had ample time to build on the 2014 car, much earlier than everybody else I assume. They also have the almighty Mercedes V6 everybody is so afraid of next year. So I'd rank them pretty high on the list and I expect them to come back swinging. Other than that it's close to impossible to say where the rest will be.

History suggests they've been better at NA engines in F1. In fact I'd go so far as to say the only time Renaults were the best turbos on the grid were when they were the only turbos on the grid.

Surprised by the lack of faith in Marussia and Caterham here. They've sucked for the past few years, but let's not forget Force India used the last major rules shake-up to propel themselves into the midfield. Also, Bianchi, Pic & VdG are a handy trio of drivers IMO.

Agreed!

That being said, I'm not sure 1980s/1990s results are going to be any relevant as to how good these manufacturers will be at the 2010s technology. We're talking Mercedes/Ilmor, Renault and Ferrari/Fiat here, all 3 extremely experienced manufacturing groups in all of motor racing and road car technology, it's not exactly like any of the 3 will have a major advantage over the others on paper. Of course it's entirely possible one will get it right or wrong and make a serious difference at the beginning of this technology, but on paper it's hard to tell who.

Oh I agree. I don't see why any past level of success would indicate an advantage in 2014.
