News from Finland is that Lotus and Caterham are going to merge:

http://inagist.com/a...66819436331008/

Truly dreadful news if Caterham & Lotus would merge and Sauber & Marussia as well.

That would leave just 18 cars and 9 teams in F1.

Not true, 9 teams would activate a clause which will allow teams to run 3 cars. Mind you only big teams could afford to do this. And most certainly will only come into effect by 2015 if a replacement 10th team cannot be found.

But I would love 3 car teams  :drunk:

Is that true? I didn't know that if the grid drops to 9 teams, they can run 3rd cars.

I definitely read about it at the beginning of the season in an article about Bernie wanting just 10 teams (a story which came after it was revealed Marussia and Caterham held merger talks). I have been searching for the article since I made that post but cant find it yet. I believe it was a Sky article but might have been autosport.

EDIT:

Found something (not the article I was referring to but evidence nonetheless).

http://www.crash.net...t_imminent.html

Third paragraph

“I think I'm correct in saying that, under current regulations, if the numbers of cars on the grid falls below a certain number, then certain teams are required to run three cars – but, as far as I know, there's been no discussion about three-car teams in the near future,” Marussia's John Booth explained, “Certainly, I've not been part of the discussions, [but] I assume it would need a big change in regulations to achieve that.”

The number Booth is referring to I am absolutely sure is 10.

It would have to drop to 8 teams surely.

Basis maths tells us 9 x 3 is 27, which is a bit too many cars. 24 with 8 teams is doable.

The inter-team battles could work out to be something special, and we could learn more with drivers having more relative opposition. But I am quite fond of the 2 car set up we have, just because its what I have grown up with, and the fact it would promote having a larger diversity of cars.

If there is a will, there's a way.

RedBull already runs 4 cars.

Others can do the same.

Interesting.

How that would effect the constructors title is anyone's guess, would they readjust the scoring system on it or not?

There are and have been numerous threads discussing 3 car teams. This thread is for discussing the 2014 Silly Season which at this stage  is still 11 two car teams.

I'll probably be eating these words later today, but I expect Force India to leave it characteristically late to announce their driver line-up for 2014.

The Spiegel article mentions Perez as Hülkenberg's team mate at FI, so Sutil is off to Sauber and di Resta out of F1.

I'm not sure who's the winner in Sutil <-> Hülkenberg swap. Looking at 2013 and their cars, Sutil for sure.

If the Ferrari engines are bad though, then maybe FI is the better bet with Mercedes. But we don't know yet.

If Sutil goes to Sauber, then Hulkenberg will come out best out of the two. I think that with Mercedes power and the car in general, that Force India will be ahead of Sauber next year.

By far the biggest loser is di Resta, he's going to be gone out of F1 completely

Considering all the uncertainty surrounding Sauber's future, i'd say Hulk. Looks like Sauber lost head of track engineering Tom McCullough to FIndia as well.

I do not recall him saying anything about the other seat back in mid October when he made his prediction. Maybe later?

That could match the existing Marussia rumours, although it's not particularly helpful as most of the teams are British!

HAM scored more points, that should be proof enough.

The driver scoring more points gets the lower number usually. (There are exception of course, see Schumacher at Mercedes)

Nope.

And going by the last months rumours he is more likely not to race than to race for Sauber next year. Russian money not coming forward + experience factor

Red Bull: Vettel/Ricciardo

Mercedes: Hamilton/Rosberg

Ferrari: Alonso/Raikkonen

Lotus: Grosjean/Maldonado

McLaren: Button/Magnussen

Force India: di Resta/Hulkenberg

Sauber: Perez/Sutil

Toro Rosso: Vergne/Kvyat

Williams: Bottas/Massa

Marussia: Bianchi/Gutierrez

Caterham: van der Garde/Kovalainen

This would suit me, keeps di Resta in Formula One :)
