"Confidence is a weakness" - stick with it, Ron!

News to me.

Love this confidence from the team. I really hope we can keep on fighting at the front next time out.

What do we reckon - will Sepang suit the '29?

Sepang was one of the few tracks where the -28 worked 'well', so I'd be optimistic about the new car's chances there. It's another track where Jenson goes well too.

Jenson Button fans had to wait a bit longer for his first podium than Kevin Magnussen fans

10 years ago today at Sepang! Nice nostalgia tweet by McLaren:

I'm assuming that in addition to the 0.5 relative to other teams (less what they bring)... that the Merc teams should enjoy a bigger advantage over Renault and Ferrari at a HOT circuit with two long straights preceded by traction zones (Renault's and Ferraris respective problems magnified)??

I'm sure they did some testing of a few new components on Friday just to verify them, possibly with no intention of running them until Malaysia.

Actually McLaren raced the new front wing and the turning vains below the nose in Australia. Jenson back to back tested old front wing for a couple of laps and after that they raced the new one for the rest of the weekend.

I made a quick comparison of the changes

And also the new FW from bellow

Did anyone try this during the last race?

Can't say I've ever used this... I use live timing and that's it. I find that with too many things to use to follow the race I lose out on actually watching the race!

Yes, didn't find anything bar the normal snippets of the radio transmission like last season. Nothing else so far.

Will she always be there...because I really don't have a problem with that. She can control my mission any time she wants.

I got an achievement from clicking on her  :rotfl:

I got a very slow response on my rather elderly PC, so I hope they revert to the old website.

I clicked on the lady, and a few minutes later she complained. :D

I can`t even imagine how those cooling radiators work in that position! I thought they are angled from the center line and they are parallel...  :drunk:

To clarify - you say 'again' - does that mean it wasn't used in Australia? I thought it was?

I am always surprised at how simple the radiators look.

I imagined they could be made curved or different shapes to fit snugly into the side-pod; they seem to make the rads rectangular and quite flat like in any normal car and then mould the best aero shape around that. EDIT: To add, if you are a computer geek, you'll know there are all kind of weird and wonderful radiator shapes available now to go in cars, some with copper fins etc, I wonder if F1 could make us of this kind of

Here they are at 90 degrees to the air-flow relative to what you would expect... I think that tells us something about how complex the internal aero of these cars is.

That doesn't make sense.

Yes, it was used in Australia, hence the use of the word 'again' :)

Black side pods again, looking at the tub paint work.

Maybe MP4-29 instead of Mobil as that was said to be a one off?

They wouldn't put MP4-29 on the car, it's meaningless.

I'd expect it to either be a McLaren logo or one of the other partners.

Good news,

Guess someone at Mobil liked what they saw in Melbourne and have decided to throw a bit more cash their way.

I assume that the initial sidepod deal could be for one race with a view to extend the agreement or something. That way Mobile doesn't feel like its over committed.

Some people were speculating that the mushrooms might not be used on tracks with long straights, because they look like they might have high drag.

So it will be interesting to see what straight-line speed the 29 will have. If it turns out to be very slow, I suppose they could switch the suspension components, if they have brought an alternative setup.

Anyone know what the two large tube-like structures sticking out at 90 degrees to the tub are for (one about 30cm above the other)?

I thought the 'shroom' was not an issue at high speed, as the downforce increases pushing the suspension down causes the elements to separate creating a gap which reduces drag.

I saw a little diagram of it once...

It depends how much the suspension moves, but that is one theory, certainly.

I think we have to hope that it's very clever..

The side shape is a bit like last year's Merc (not the gonzo bit, further back).
