I didn't know if I should have supplied the AUTOSPORT link in the Ferrari F138 thread - or put it here.

Nevertheless, Ecclestone says that he's not sure whether Ferrari weren't competitive because of him - or because the guys making the car didn't do a good job.

The exact quote was:

"I don't know whether the team is not competitive because of him or because the people running the team aren't getting the job done."

It's really strange for someone with that much power to come out and say what he did.

Here is the link:

http://www.autosport...t.php/id/111706

What do people think? Should Ecclestone be even saying such things? It's not as if he's got access to Ferrari data, is it?

[On second thought, he could be saying that perhaps the team (and not the F138) wasn't successful because of Fernando - or perhaps the people running things (as opposed to the designers of the F138 itself) created the environment for the lack of success.]

Perhaps Ecclestone might be talking about the 'team' as opposed to the F138?

I would agree, over the summer I think most people didn't expect him to stay with Ferrari after this season. After his issues with Ferrari management his motivation looked really down.

Well, I think he does. My first reaction to this was Ecclestone and LdM were talking recently! ;)

No, it's not even that. Bernie just loves to stir the pot, it's always been like that. If there's anything behind it, it's marketing. Creating controversy and headlines to sell the show. Nothing personal.

Personal or not, Bernie tends to create controversy and to accuse Ferrari of doing something wrong. You're right it's more popular when someone says "Alonso gave up during the season" than "Vergne gave up after Bahrain". But it's awful.

He doesn't hate Alonso, he is just giving his views in a season review. Don't let that headline title fool you, that is just journalism for you.

"I thought he gave up a little bit, which is proof he was looking for another team."

That constitutes proof in Bernie's mind, really?

I don't think those comments are entirely unfair. He certainly didn't perform as well this year as he did in 2012.

My take is that's the question that has come up inside Ferrari as well and Kimi was hired to answer that question. If Fred beats him as expected, then it was the latter.

It really would be too much to expect a 2012-like performance every year. He didn't perform as well, but to turn that into Alonso's fault that Ferrari did not make the WDC is insane.

But what if Kimi can't be at the level he himself would like to be because of back injury or whateverelse?

What if Kimi isn't faster?

What if only Vettel can answer that question?

How do we know Hulkenberg isn't "better" than Kimi?

And, what does it all say about Massa?

Classic Ecclestone bullshit.

In the first 4 or 5 races, when Ferrari were very competitive, Alonso had two wins, one second place and some bad luck in Malaysia and Bahrain, two races where he still was one of the candidates for the victory.

In the second part of the season Ferrari wasn't competitive anymore but Fernando was still able to catch some great podiums, with a nice streak of three consecutive 2nd place finishes in Spa, Monza and Singapore.

With his F138, against that RB9, 2nd place in the championship is maybe a little miracle... I really don't know how Ecclestone can't understand if Ferrari didn't win because of him or because of the car.

Massa finished the season with less than half of Fernando's points.

An 83 year old used car salesman who is in court in the UK and is awaiting trial in Germany.

And is desperate to put up some smokescreens to stop the world looking too closely at his crooked affairs.

Lol, if Kimi isn't faster and they still can't bring in the WDC, then they just replace Kimi with Hulkenberg, Vettel or whoever. If Kimi is faster, they'll boot Fred and replace him with Hulkenberg, Vettel or whoever.

The seat was open, invitation was sent and the carpet rolled.....Still Vettel has not joined Ferrari.

Bernie should convince him to do so. After all the car is not a problem according to him.

Nice to know the skids are greased and the excuses are set for 2014 Raikkonen performance.

And the best man+machine should win, not Alonso because Bernie was hoping it would happen (as he stated in this same interview).

In the end, nobody is completely happy with Bernie's comments... but he will not cease to make them.

Bernie obviously underestimates the toll on fighting uphill battles against Vettel and Red Bull. And to do it year after year. Look at what it has done to Webber, Hamilton and Alonso. And McLaren.

But that does not exclude the possibility of him being correct.

Judging from what has been touched upon in this article, namely possible contacts with RBR and McLaren, and the darts at Ferrari, I would not be surprised if his level of motivation was affected after the summer break. How much? We'll never know...

Ecclestone is the word of reason and truth inside F1.

Everything he says is always 100% right and should be taken as a fact.

He's and example for all people in the world and everyone should aspire to become a person like him.

His humility, honesty and respect to others and the media are 2nd to none.

Nope, this is Mr. Ecclestone presenting the topic of conversation in F1 will be until the 2014 cars are revealed.  Classic BE marketing and two step tango:

Part 1) Tweak the F1 pundits and movers and shakers with "C. Horner should replace me.  ASAP".

Part 2) Tweak the most emotional fans and most important team with "did Ferrari or Alonso give up on the season?"

I understand where Bernie's coming from. After the summer break I saw a different Alonso as well, a broken one. Poor qualifying sessions and especially after Singapore it was really bad. His car wasn't good, but certainly no worse than his 2012 challenger. Yet I had the impression he lacked the spark, which he did have last season.

Same here, I think Bernie has a valid point, I remember a question being asked of Alonso regarding Vettel being the youngest 2 x WDC and he replied with something like "Lets see who's the youngest 3 x WDC", we all know how that turned out despite Alonso having a stellar 2012, I think that watching Vettel cruise to his 4th title knocked some of the wind out of Alonso's sails.
